Winning games against top-ten teams, receiving national rankings and being regarded as one of the top programs in the Ostate and in the region are now attributes of a program built under head coach Marlin Ikenberry. Ikenberry enters his sixth season at the helm of the program as the winningest coach in the history of VMI baseball. The 2008 season saw the Keydets post their third-consecutive winning campaign, a feat not accomplished in the past 52 years of the program, while VMI also defeated a ranked team for the fourth-straight season. Also during the year, the Keydets went 14-7 in the Big South, the first winning league mark since VMI joined the confer- ence in 2003. In 2007, Ikenberry guided his squad to a 34-21 record, marking the third-straight season the team had broken the school record for wins, while also knock- ing off a pair of top-ten teams for the first time in program history. As a result,VMI baseball earned its first-ever national ranking, being tabbed 30th in the coun- try by Collegiate Baseball in back-to-back weeks while also receiving votes in the Writers’ Poll. Marlin Ikenberry was named head coach on July 22, 2003, being promoted to the top spot in the program after former head coach Tom Slater departed VMI in the summer of 2003 to accept a coaching position at the University of Florida. As Slater's top assistant and recruiting coordinator for three years, Ikenberry played a key role in the resurgence of the VMI baseball program that set a school record for victories in 2003 at 24-28.That same year, the Keydets posted a 16-14 mark in the Southern Conference, securing their first winning confer- ence mark since 1969. Since taking over the program, Ikenberry has continued that success, improving the team’s win total each of the past three seasons. After winning 23 games in his first year and 27 contests in his second season, historical ground was broken in 2006, when the Keydets won 30 games for the first time in program histo- ry while also marking the first time in 41 years that the program posted a winning record. Hailed as one of the state's top recruiters, Ikenberry has signed several players that have enjoyed great success in Lexington. He is responsible for the sign- ing of two Louisville Slugger Freshman All-Americans, a Southern Conference Freshman of the Year, five Big South First-Team All-Conference selections and a 2003 All-SoCon Tournament player. Ikenberry, 35, served as VMI's recruiting coordinator and pitching and catching coach in 2003 and was vital in the staff's remarkable improvement that sea- son.Working closely with the Keydet pitchers and catchers, Ikenberry helped guide the pitching staff to an improvement of nearly two runs in team earned run average from the previous season. "We're very excited to have Marlin Ikenberry as our head baseball coach," VMI athletic director and former Keydets head baseball coach Donny White said upon Ikenberry's hiring. "He has all the ingredients to be a great head coach. His recruiting work has made a difference in the program and has certainly been instrumental to our success. He has the leadership and abilities to build on the program's recent performance and reach the goal of a conference championship." A 1995 graduate of VMI,Ikenberry played for the Keydets and was recruited by VMI Hall of Famer Chris Finwood, now head coach at Western Kentucky. Ikenberry returned to his alma mater in the summer of 2000 after spending three years at the College of William and Mary as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. While in Williamsburg, Ikenberry earned a reputation as one of the state's top recruiters and landed two high school All-Americans and freshman All-Americans. In 2000, the Tribe of William and Mary finished with a school record 32 wins and placed third in the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament. The team also set a school record for best fielding percentage at .967.The next season,William and Mary won the CAA Championship and earned a berth in the NCAA Regional Tournament.

IDH 2930 Section 1D18 HNR Read Moneyball Tuesday 3 (9:35-10:25 a. m.) Little Hall 0117 Brian McCrea brmccrea@ufl. edu (352) 478-9687 Moneyball includes twelve chapters, an epilogue, and a (for me) important postscript. We will read and discuss one chapter a week, then finish with a week devoted to the epilogue and to the postscript. At our first meeting we will introduce ourselves to each other and figure out who amongst us are baseball fans, who not. (One need not have an interest in baseball to enjoy Lewis or to enjoy Moneyball; indeed, the course benefits greatly from disinterested business and math majors.) I will ask you to write informally every class session about the reading. I will not grade your responses, but I will keep a word count. At the end of the semester, we will have an Awards Ceremony for our most prolific writers. While this is not a prerequisite, I hope that everyone has looked at Moneyball the movie (starring Brad Pitt as Billy Beane) before we begin to work with the book. Moneyball first was published—to great acclaim—in 2003. So the book is fifteen-year’s old, and the “new” method of evaluating baseball players pioneered by Billy Beane has been widely adopted. Beane’s Oakland A’s no longer are as successful as they were in the early 2000s. What Lewis refers to as “sabremetrics”—the statistical analysis of baseball performance—has expanded greatly. Baseball now has statistics totally different from those in place as Lewis wrote: WAR (Wins against replacement), WHIP (Walks and hits per inning pitched) among them.

Records and History Old Dominion University Baseball 2009 Old Dominion University Baseball 2009 27 BUD METHENY n Jan 2, 2003 Old Dominion University and the athletic program lost a legend with the passing of Bud MethenyO and his wife Fran on the same day. Bud spent 32 years at the University from 1948 to 1980 as an instructor, basketball coach, athletic director and coach of the baseball program. Baseball was his passion, and where he made his mark. As a member of the New York Yankees from 1937 to 1946, Bud played on the 1943 World Series championship squad that stopped St. Louis. Bud started for the Yankees in the second and last game of the series. As a coach of the Monarchs, he rolled up a 423‑363‑6 record and was honored by the NCAA as the Eastern Regional coach of the year in 1963 and ‘64 and National Coach Of the Year in 1964. His Monarchs won the NCAA College Division Eastern Regional championship in 1963 and 1964 and took second in 1965. Bud not only coached baseball, but he was the men’s basketball head coach from 1948‑1965, compiling a 198‑163 record and posting 16 winning seasons. He served as the University’s athletic director from 1963‑1970. Following his retirement it was only fitting to honor Bud with the naming of the new baseball stadium in 1983 and with the adoption of the blue and white pin stripes of the Yankees on uniforms the following year, which coincides with the University’s new school colors, adopted in 1986.

  • Oral History Interview with ARTHUR B. METHENY Norfolk, Virginia May 29, 1975 by James R
Oral History Interview with ARTHUR B. METHENY Norfolk, Virginia May 29, 1975 by James R. Sweeney, Old Dominion University Sweeney: Today we’re continuing the interview with Mr. Arthur B. "Bud" Metheny, for many years the baseball coach and former chairman of the department of health and physical education at Old Dominion University. Starting with question 111 here, by 1964 you seemed in public statements to see a change for the better coming in the college’s athletic policy as plans were being formulated for a new physical education building with a 10,000 seat gymnasium. You also indicated a possible change in the school’s "no athletic scholarships" policy. I wonder why such changes came about in the administration’s attitude? Metheny: Well, in 1960 I wrote the first letter investigating the possibility of having our new building. And it took us 10 years to get it. We got in it in 1970. And we were doing well in baseball, and the students wanted to move up in the grading of the entire program. That was their request, and in the editorials in the newspaper and things of that type. And so we started investigating the possibility of moving up in athletics, which we did in getting into the Mason— Dixon. And with the demand of the newspapers and the public we thought that we were about ready to move up in the field of athletics. So we started making our preparations for that. And we knew that if we did move up and to be able to compete on an equal basis that we’d have to give athletic scholarships.
