ELMONT MEMORIAL LIBRARY TEEN CORNER JULY 2016 ALL SUMMER PROGRAMS AND ACTIVITIES ARE FOR TEENS ENTERING GRADES 7-12 AS OF SEPTEMBER 2016 REGISTRATION PROCEDURES: Registration dates as follows: Monday, June 20: registration begins for programs the week of July 5, 2016 Monday, June 27: registration begins for programs the week of July 11, 2016 Tuesday, July 5: registration begins for programs the week of July 18, 2016 Monday, July 11: registration begins for programs the week of July 25, 2016 Monday, July 18: registration begins for programs the week of August 01, 2016 Monday, July 25: registration begins for programs the week of August 08, 2016 Monday, August 1: registration begins for programs the week of August 15, 2016 You may register on line, in person or by calling Teen Corner at 354-5280 ext. 247 unless noted otherwise Every program registrant must register under their own Elmont library card number Parent / caregivers may register their own teen You may not register a friend or relative Non-residents will be placed on the non-resident waiting list Registered participants must be present at the time the program is scheduled to begin. We regret that after that time, their place will be given to those on the waiting list. If you are unable to attend a workshop, please call YA Services so your place can be given to a patron on the waiting list. Patrons who repeatedly fail to attend programs they have registered for may be refused admittance to future programs Participation in a library program entitles the Elmont Memorial Library to use photographs for publicity purposes. GAME BUDDIES: gaming program Mondays, July 11, 18, 25, August 01, 08 & 15, 2:30 pm LEND A HAND: summer volunteer program Mondays - Fridays, July 5 – August 12, 12noon - 8:00 p.m. BOOKS & SUNDAES ON TUESDAYS Tuesdays, July 05, 12, 19, and 26, 2:00 p.m. Make a sundae, talk about books! FITNESS FOR TEENS: Teen Yoga Tuesday, July 5, 6:30 p.m. Stretch your body, reduce stress and increase your energy with yoga! Bring a mat or a large towel, water bottle, and dress comfortably. *Release and Waiver of Legal Liability must be on file to participate in any fitness program. TEEN CUISINE: Homemade Hummus Wednesday, July 6, 6:30 p.m. Make some wonderfully fresh homemade hummus and enjoy it with warm pitas, celery and carrots. FITNESS FOR TEENS: Hoop~N~Savasana Thursday, July 7, 6:30 p.m. This class combines the fun of hoop dancing with the relaxation of yoga. Learn some cool hooping tricks too! Sneakers required! HOW TO: CPR / AED Training Friday, July 08, 12:00-4:00 p.m. In this interactive, hands-on workshop, participants will learn about: How to check the scene of an emergency How to recognize a medical emergency in an adult or child How to determine the needs of the injured How and when to call 911 Signs of heart conditions in child or adult Rescue CPR and hands only CPR Rescue breathing with face mask When and how to use an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) Signs of choking in child or adult and steps to dislodge an airway obstruction The class provides a non-stressful way of learning and practicing important life saving skills. All participants will receive local certificates of completion. HOW TO: Intro to Martial Arts Tuesday, July 12, 6:30 p.m. In addition to providing you with physical fitness, martial arts training also benefits your mental health, contributes to your self-esteem, self-control, and emotional well-being. TEEN CUISINE: Super-food Desserts Wednesday, July 13, 6:30 p.m. You will have a blast creating two healthy, vegan dessert treats! Avocado mousse combines organic cocoa powder, avocados and maple syrup. Coconut date drops are made from shredded coconut, chopped dates, vegan super meal and rice bran to make another fun and healthy treat. HOW TO: Learn to Code Thursday, July 14, 6:30 p.m. Join our certified Google Admin as you navigate your first ‘hour of code’. DIY: Fan Flip Flops Friday, July 15, 3:00 p.m. Join artist/instructor Natalie and design your own fun-fan pair of flip-flops. Flip-flops provided! FITNESS FOR TEENS Tap Dancing Tuesday, July 19, 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Presented in the most entertaining manner, attendees will be instructed on how to tap dance. TEEN CUISINE: Zucchini Cakes Wednesday, July 20, 6:30 p.m. Learn how to make and enjoy this healthy, summer treat. DIY: Teen Paint Party Thursday, July 21, 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Enjoy a fun night of step by step painting, music & refreshments! Go home with your own original artwork! The session lasts approximately 3 hours including set-up and clean-up. All materials are provided. YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT with FEMCHO & BROCHO Friday, July 22, 3:00 p.m. 30 minute of dance/fitness + 30 minutes of talk = A lifetime of confidence! Discuss how to plan healthy meals when you are on the go. Find out the secret of hidden calories. Learn hip-hop dance techniques such as popping, locking, break dance, tutting, waacking, krumping, house and footwork. Sneakers required! TEEN CUISINE: Super-food Smoothies Wednesday, July 27, 6:30 p.m. Enjoy making and drinking two healthy, vegan, delicious, super-food smoothies! Smoothie #1 combines organic cocoa powder, organic frozen bananas and organic chocolate protein powder. Smoothie #2 combines organic frozen bananas, strawberries and organic vanilla super-food protein powder. BODIES IN MOTION: photography workshop Thursday, July 28, 6:30 p.m. Join us for a hands-on introductory workshop. We will learn the basics of digital and film cameras while playing and experimenting with light and movement. We will work together to create long exposure pictures (shows motion in just one picture!). Bring a camera if you have one. FITNESS FOR TEENS: Fitness Fusion Friday, July 29, 3:00 p.m. Learn basic of yoga combined with aerobic exercises, and zumba movements. Increase your flexibility, strengthen muscles, and tone your body. Sneakers required!
