Deacon grew up in OadbyLeicestershireplaying bass in a local band, The Opposition, before moving to study electronics at Chelsea CollegeLondon. He joined Queen in on the strength of his musical and electronic skills, particularly the home-made Deacy Amp which guitarist Brian May used to create guitar orchestras throughout Queen's career. From the third album, Sheer Heart Attackonwards, he wrote at least one song per album, several of which became hits. As well as bass, Deacon played some guitar, keyboards and piano on Queen's studio work. After the death of lead singer Freddie Mercury in and the following year's Tribute ConcertDeacon performed only sporadically with the remaining members of Queen before retiring from the music industry in after recording " No-One but You Only the Good Die Young ". He has not performed on any of the other projects that the two remaining members, Brian May and Roger Taylorhave put together. John Richard Deacon was born on 19 August at St. He became interested in electronicsreading magazines on the subject and building small devices, including the modification of a reel-to-reel tape deck to record music directly from the radio. Deacon joined his first band, The Opposition, in at the age of The band played covers of chart hits; Deacon played rhythm guitar Queen: The Bass Guitar Collection an instrument he had bought with money borrowed from the group's founder, Richard Young. After being in the band for four years, not long after the group cut an acetate of three songs, Deacon played his final concert with the band then called The Art in August Although he Queen: The Bass Guitar Collection his bass and amplifier at home in Oadby, after less than a year of studying in London, Deacon decided he wanted to join a band. In earlyDeacon was introduced to Taylor and May by a friend at a disco who told him that they were in a band that had just lost its bassist. A couple of days later he auditioned in a lecture room at Imperial College London and became the last member of Queen to join. On Queen's first album he was credited as "Deacon John", [21] in order to make him "sound more interesting". He asked to be credited under his real name, which was done on all Queen: The Bass Guitar Collection from Queen II onwards. Deacon's first writing credit came on Queen's third album, Sheer Heart Attack He wrote "Misfire", a Caribbean-themed song where he played almost all guitar parts, and co-wrote " Stone Cold Crazy " with the rest of the band. He also played some guide guitar parts on the album as May had been hospitalised with hepatitis when recording started. Subsequently, Deacon tended to write one or two songs for every Queen album, until The Miracle and Innuendowhich credited the band as a whole. The song saw radio play on both black and white US music stations. Deacon played a larger role on the band's album Hot Space. He played rhythm guitar on the opening "Staying Power" because of his soul and Motown-influenced style, and Queen: The Bass Guitar Collection on playing guitar Queen: The Bass Guitar Collection his own composition "Back Chat" and not allowing May to play any guitar solos because the style did not fit what Deacon wanted. This led to an acrimonious argument between the two. Deacon considered his songwriting to be of equal importance to his musical skills in Queen. He later said "If I'd just been a bass Queen: The Bass Guitar Collection all Queen: The Bass Guitar Collection life with the band, I wouldn't be as satisfied I only consider that as part of what I do". Deacon was upset the most by Mercury's death in Novemberwhich resulted in a reduction in his musical activity. There is no point carrying on. It is impossible to replace Freddie. Deacon has stayed out of the public eye since retiring. Brian May has since said that Deacon is still involved on the business side of Queen but chooses to stay out of the limelight. May also confirmed that Deacon approved of the making of the band's biopic Bohemian Rhapsodywhere he was played by Joseph Mazzello. May added, however, "he still keeps an eye on Queen: The Bass Guitar Collection finances, though. John Deacon is still John Deacon. We don't undertake anything financial without talking to him. InRolling Stone wrote that the combination of Taylor and Deacon "is explosive, a colossal sonic volcano whose eruption makes the earth tremble. He would occasionally play synthesizers on his own compositions and often composed at the piano, playing a Wurlitzer Queen: The Bass Guitar Collection piano on "You're My Best Friend". Deacon's first bass, used in The Opposition, was an Ekolater switching to a Rickenbacker For most of Queen's career, he used a Fender Precision Bass Queen: The Bass Guitar Collection, which underwent a number of cosmetic changes. Towards the end of the group's career, he used a custom bass designed by Roger Giffin. His most famous creation is the " Deacy Amp ", built in from pieces of electronic equipment found in a skip, and used by himself and May throughout Queen's recording career. Many of the so-called "guitar orchestras" on Queen albums use this amplifier. Deacon usually played the bass with his fingers, instead of using a plectrum. A review of Sheer Heart Attack said "Only at the end would a new initiate to Queen recognize John Deacon's unmistakable trademark Deacon has often been described as the "quiet" member of the band. Although the rest of the band felt he was the right bassist for them, he barely spoke in rehearsals and avoided arguments. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Queen Group 3: Jennifer Day, Xander Jarnow, Duke McGhee, Shelby Stehn, Adam Vandenhouten, Tyler Kallevig Reasons Why We Chose Queen: There are a lot of reasons that we, as a group, decided to do our project on Queen. Queen is an extremely well-known band across multiple generations, so it is an artist that we can talk to almost anyone anywhere about. Additionally, they were an influence to many artists after them. Finally, they released over 15 albums that showed a very impressive musical range and an awe-inspiring amount of talent. Queen: Overview Queen was one of the most popular and successful rock groups during the 1970s and 80s, with a very unique, experimental style and sound, Queen has remained one of the best selling artists of all time. The band began its formation in 1967, when the guitarist Brian May and the drummer Roger Taylor joined with Tim Staffell to form a rock group named Smile. When Tim Staffell left the group, May and Taylor joined forces with Freddie Mercury and a bass player named John Deacon, resulting in the core version of the band in 1970. Queen was famous for bright, glam, “pomp-rock” and put on energetic shows. Freddie Mercury in particular was known for his flamboyant style. Their sound was a very produced and incorporated elements of glam rock, heavy metal, hard rock, and harmony. After the tragic death of Freddie Mercury the band added new members and continued performing Even today their songs remain popular, for example, “We Are the Champions,” “Another One Bites the Dust,” “Bohemian Rhapsody,” and “We Will Rock You” are still played often.

TCNJ JOURNAL OF STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP VOLUME XIV APRIL 2012 HETEROSEXUAL ANDROGYNY, QUEER HYPERMASCULINITY, AND HETERONORMATIVE INFLUENCE IN THE MUSIC OF FREDDIE MERCURY AND QUEEN Author: Rishi Malhotra Faculty Sponsor: Wayne Heisler, Department of Music ABSTRACT AND INTRODUCTION In a musical career that spanned two decades, Freddie Mercury served as lead vocalist and chief songwriter for the rock band, Queen. Initially regarded as a glam-metal outfit, they later experimented with more eclectic musical styles, notably the rock-opera fusion that characterized Mercury‟s widely successful composition, “Bohemian Rhapsody.” Mercury‟s use of imagery in live performances and music videos helped to shape responses to his lyrics and music. His change in appearance from androgynous, heterosexual rock star to “gay macho clone” led many to speculate that he was homosexual, although he never disclosed his orientation until shortly before his death. His protean appearance contrasted with his lyrical and musical consistency and provided alternative avenues for interpreting his music beyond the scope of heteronormativity. Many songs that were initially construed as reflecting his assumed heterosexuality were later interpreted as expressions of his homosexuality. Mercury has retained a legacy amongst admirers of differing sexual orientations, from members of the gay community during the early years of the AIDS epidemic to sports fans in stadiums around the world. Heteronormativity, according to Judith Butler, assumes heterosexuality as the norm, and deviation from heterosexuality as unnatural or abnormal. The apparent tendency to avoid decentralization of sexual identities and to default to heteronormative viewpoints is evident in the rock and pop music of Freddie Mercury and Queen.

  • Queen Hitting the Big Screens
Queen Hitting the Big Screens By: Kierra Setting The world is excited to see their favorite Rock band of all time hit the big screens. Even after nearly 27 years since their passionate lead singer Freddie Mercury passed away, people still enjoy the beautifully crafted songs by Queen. For this reason, 20th Century is releasing a movie as a tribute to the rock and roll band. Everyone knows “Bohemian Rhapsody,” but Queen was so much more than that. The band “Queen” was a rock and roll band that consisted of the talented lead singer Freddie Mercury, the drummer Roger Taylor, lead guitarist Brian May, and bass guitarist John Deacon. They all came together to form the band in 1970. The popular band wrote some of the most famous rock songs such as: “ Somebody to Love”, “ We Will Rock You”, “Another One Bites the Dust” and of course the well known “Bohemian Rhapsody.” Freddie Mercury tragically passed away due to AIDs in 1991 and John Deacon passed away in 1997. Although those members are gone, the band still continues to go on tour in Las Vegas today. Adam Lambert is subbing as the lead singer. Along with Adam, the original band members Brian May and Roger Taylor still perform. As of now, the movie will be titled Bohemian Rhapsody in honor of a song written by Freddie Mercury, which became the starting point of the band; their most popular and well-known song. The film will be released on November 2, 2018. The filming for the movie took place in London.
