Queen Hitting the Big Screens By: Kierra Setting The world is excited to see their favorite Rock band of all time hit the big screens. Even after nearly 27 years since their passionate lead singer Freddie Mercury passed away, people still enjoy the beautifully crafted songs by Queen. For this reason, 20th Century is releasing a movie as a tribute to the rock and roll band. Everyone knows “Bohemian Rhapsody,” but Queen was so much more than that. The band “Queen” was a rock and roll band that consisted of the talented lead singer Freddie Mercury, the drummer Roger Taylor, lead guitarist Brian May, and bass guitarist John Deacon. They all came together to form the band in 1970. The popular band wrote some of the most famous rock songs such as: “ Somebody to Love”, “ We Will Rock You”, “Another One Bites the Dust” and of course the well known “Bohemian Rhapsody.” Freddie Mercury tragically passed away due to AIDs in 1991 and John Deacon passed away in 1997. Although those members are gone, the band still continues to go on tour in Las Vegas today. Adam Lambert is subbing as the lead singer. Along with Adam, the original band members Brian May and Roger Taylor still perform. As of now, the movie will be titled Bohemian Rhapsody in honor of a song written by Freddie Mercury, which became the starting point of the band; their most popular and well-known song. The film will be released on November 2, 2018. The filming for the movie took place in London. The cast of the film consists of Rami Malek (Freddie Mercury), Ben Hardy (Roger Taylor), Joseph Mazzello (John Deacon), and Gwilym Lee (Brian May). One of the most fascinating parts of the behind the scenes on the film is that the original band members Brian May and Roger Taylor are helping direct it. They have been helping the actors play their instruments, teaching Rami to sing like Freddie, and helping them understand what exactly their journey looked like. In fact, one of the first things was Brian May and Roger Taylor listening to Rami Malek pre- record Bohemian Rhapsody. Although all of the shooting of the movie went very well, the directing of the movie took a few turns for the worst. Unfortunately, the movie almost did not end up in the theatres due to issues with the director. Bryan Singer was the original director up until two weeks before their principal photography was finished. Singer was let go by Fox after reportedly being a no-show on set and fighting with Rami Malek. Rami stated, “At that point — we had all this time of rehearsal — we knew our characters so well, we knew exactly what the scenes were left to shoot, and we had just operated in a way that there was no question about how we were going to finish this. We all knew what we were doing, [we] had a handle on it.” Luckily Singer was replaced by Eddie the Eagle star Dexter Fletcher. The cast stated that they are extremely pleased with the replacement. The directors have been spreading the news about the movie through social media such as Instagram and Snapchat. The movie has a account where they are posting pictures of the actors, sneak peaks, and interviews for the audience to get an idea of what the movie will be based on. There have been several commercials which feature clips from the movie. So far we know that the movie will include how the band formed, Freddie’s love life and events such as the recording of “Bohemian Rhapsody.” What most people do not know is that fans were given the opportunity to be a part of the movie. The directors posted a advertisement on Instagram to promote this idea. If fans go to “Put me in Bohemian Rhapsody” you can have your voice featured in a special scene. The selected voices will be part of the audience singing while the band is performing at Live Aid. Live Aid was the most iconic performance in Music history, which is why the directors want the fans to be a part of it. If you sing along to the song with the provided lyrics, they will combine your voice with others to create the effect of the ecstatic audience at the show. Erin Mcgregor stated, “It sounds like a really cool idea. It’s definitely a new way to get fans interested and excited for the movie.” Although this is extremely exciting, it is not the only thing that they are doing to get the fans excited for the movie. The cast of the movie has been traveling across America doing “Q and A’s”, where they answer fans’ questions such as what their favorite Queen song was and how the movie changed their perspective on the band’s journey. They will also be going live on Instagram, and filming more sessions for fans to get more information about the upcoming movie. The cast hopes you enjoy the movie while you watch Queen’s journey through the film. .
