Queen Hitting the Big Screens Queen Hitting the Big Screens By: Kierra Setting The world is excited to see their favorite Rock band of all time hit the big screens. Even after nearly 27 years since their passionate lead singer Freddie Mercury passed away, people still enjoy the beautifully crafted songs by Queen. For this reason, 20th Century is releasing a movie as a tribute to the rock and roll band. Everyone knows “Bohemian Rhapsody,” but Queen was so much more than that. The band “Queen” was a rock and roll band that consisted of the talented lead singer Freddie Mercury, the drummer Roger Taylor, lead guitarist Brian May, and bass guitarist John Deacon. They all came together to form the band in 1970. The popular band wrote some of the most famous rock songs such as: “ Somebody to Love”, “ We Will Rock You”, “Another One Bites the Dust” and of course the well known “Bohemian Rhapsody.” Freddie Mercury tragically passed away due to AIDs in 1991 and John Deacon passed away in 1997. Although those members are gone, the band still continues to go on tour in Las Vegas today. Adam Lambert is subbing as the lead singer. Along with Adam, the original band members Brian May and Roger Taylor still perform. As of now, the movie will be titled Bohemian Rhapsody in honor of a song written by Freddie Mercury, which became the starting point of the band; their most popular and well-known song. The film will be released on November 2, 2018. The filming for the movie took place in London. The cast of the film consists of Rami Malek (Freddie Mercury), Ben Hardy (Roger Taylor), Joseph Mazzello (John Deacon), and Gwilym Lee (Brian May). One of the most fascinating parts of the behind the scenes on the film is that the original band members Brian May and Roger Taylor are helping direct it. They have been helping the actors play their instruments, teaching Rami to sing like Freddie, and helping them understand what exactly their journey looked like. In fact, one of the first things was Brian May and Roger Taylor listening to Rami Malek pre- record Bohemian Rhapsody. Although all of the shooting of the movie went very well, the directing of the movie took a few turns for the worst. Unfortunately, the movie almost did not end up in the theatres due to issues with the director. Bryan Singer was the original director up until two weeks before their principal photography was finished. Singer was let go by Fox after reportedly being a no-show on set and fighting with Rami Malek. Rami stated, “At that point — we had all this time of rehearsal — we knew our characters so well, we knew exactly what the scenes were left to shoot, and we had just operated in a way that there was no question about how we were going to finish this. We all knew what we were doing, [we] had a handle on it.” Luckily Singer was replaced by Eddie the Eagle star Dexter Fletcher. The cast stated that they are extremely pleased with the replacement. The directors have been spreading the news about the movie through social media such as Instagram and Snapchat. The movie has a account where they are posting pictures of the actors, sneak peaks, and interviews for the audience to get an idea of what the movie will be based on. There have been several commercials which feature clips from the movie. So far we know that the movie will include how the band formed, Freddie’s love life and events such as the recording of “Bohemian Rhapsody.” What most people do not know is that fans were given the opportunity to be a part of the movie. The directors posted a advertisement on Instagram to promote this idea. If fans go to “Put me in Bohemian Rhapsody” you can have your voice featured in a special scene. The selected voices will be part of the audience singing while the band is performing at Live Aid. Live Aid was the most iconic performance in Music history, which is why the directors want the fans to be a part of it. If you sing along to the song with the provided lyrics, they will combine your voice with others to create the effect of the ecstatic audience at the show. Erin Mcgregor stated, “It sounds like a really cool idea. It’s definitely a new way to get fans interested and excited for the movie.” Although this is extremely exciting, it is not the only thing that they are doing to get the fans excited for the movie. The cast of the movie has been traveling across America doing “Q and A’s”, where they answer fans’ questions such as what their favorite Queen song was and how the movie changed their perspective on the band’s journey. They will also be going live on Instagram, and filming more sessions for fans to get more information about the upcoming movie. The cast hopes you enjoy the movie while you watch Queen’s journey through the film. .

  • RADIAL VELOCITIES in the ZODIACAL DUST CLOUD
A SURVEY OF RADIAL VELOCITIES in the ZODIACAL DUST CLOUD Brian Harold May Astrophysics Group Department of Physics Imperial College London Thesis submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy to Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine London · 2007 · 2 Abstract This thesis documents the building of a pressure-scanned Fabry-Perot Spectrometer, equipped with a photomultiplier and pulse-counting electronics, and its deployment at the Observatorio del Teide at Izaña in Tenerife, at an altitude of 7,700 feet (2567 m), for the purpose of recording high-resolution spectra of the Zodiacal Light. The aim was to achieve the first systematic mapping of the MgI absorption line in the Night Sky, as a function of position in heliocentric coordinates, covering especially the plane of the ecliptic, for a wide variety of elongations from the Sun. More than 250 scans of both morning and evening Zodiacal Light were obtained, in two observing periods – September-October 1971, and April 1972. The scans, as expected, showed profiles modified by components variously Doppler-shifted with respect to the unshifted shape seen in daylight. Unexpectedly, MgI emission was also discovered. These observations covered for the first time a span of elongations from 25º East, through 180º (the Gegenschein), to 27º West, and recorded average shifts of up to six tenths of an angstrom, corresponding to a maximum radial velocity relative to the Earth of about 40 km/s. The set of spectra obtained is in this thesis compared with predictions made from a number of different models of a dust cloud, assuming various distributions of dust density as a function of position and particle size, and differing assumptions about their speed and direction.

Exclusive interview Brian May plays “God Save the Queen” from the roof of Buckingham Palace to commemorate Queen Elizabeth II’s Golden Jubilee on June 3, 2002. © 2002 Arthur Edwards 26 Astronomy • September 2012 As a teenager, Brian Harold May was shy, uncer- tain, insecure. “I used to think, ‘My God, I don’t know what to do, I don’t know what to wear, I don’t know who I am,’ ” he says. For a kid who didn’t know who he was or what he wanted, he had quite a future in store. Deep, abiding interests and worldwide success A life in would come on several levels, from both science and music. Like all teenagers beset by angst, it was just a matter of sorting it all out. Skiffle, stars, and 3-D A postwar baby, Brian May was born July 19, 1947. In his boyhood home on Walsham Road in Feltham on the western side of Lon- science don, England, he was an only child, the offspring of Harold, an electronics engineer and senior draftsman at the Ministry of Avia- tion, and Ruth. (Harold had served as a radio operator during World War II.) The seeds for all of May’s enduring interests came early: At age 6, Brian learned a few chords on the ukulele from his father, who was a music enthusiast. A year later, he awoke one morning to find a “Spanish guitar hanging off the end of my bed.” and At age 7, he commenced piano lessons and began playing guitar with enthusiasm, and his father’s engineering genius came in handy to fix up and repair equipment, as the family had what some called a modest income.

Queen: ‘Killer Queen’ (from the album Sheer Heart Attack) (For component 3: Appraising) Background information and performance circumstances ‘Killer Queen’ was written by Freddie Mercury and featured on Queen’s third studio album Sheer Heart Attack released in November 1974. Freddie Mercury was born Farrokh Bulsara on 5 September 1946 in Stone Town, Sultanate of Zanzibar (now Tanzania) and grew up in India, where he was educated at St Peter’s Boys School and took up the piano at the age of 7. At the age of 17 his family moved to Middlesex, England. Queen was formed in London in 1970 with singer Freddie Mercury, guitarist Brian May, drummer Roger Taylor and bassist John Deacon. Sheer Heart Attack and A Night at the Opera (1975) brought them international success. ‘Killer Queen’ was the first single from the album and it is one of the few songs where Freddie Mercury wrote the lyrics first, which are about an upper-class prostitute. ‘Killer Queen’ reached number 2 in the British charts and provided them with their first top 20 hit in the US, peaking at number 12 on the Billboard singles chart. Queen Group 3: Jennifer Day, Xander Jarnow, Duke McGhee, Shelby Stehn, Adam Vandenhouten, Tyler Kallevig Reasons Why We Chose Queen: There are a lot of reasons that we, as a group, decided to do our project on Queen. Queen is an extremely well-known band across multiple generations, so it is an artist that we can talk to almost anyone anywhere about. Additionally, they were an influence to many artists after them. Finally, they released over 15 albums that showed a very impressive musical range and an awe-inspiring amount of talent. Queen: Overview Queen was one of the most popular and successful rock groups during the 1970s and 80s, with a very unique, experimental style and sound, Queen has remained one of the best selling artists of all time. The band began its formation in 1967, when the guitarist Brian May and the drummer Roger Taylor joined with Tim Staffell to form a rock group named Smile. When Tim Staffell left the group, May and Taylor joined forces with Freddie Mercury and a bass player named John Deacon, resulting in the core version of the band in 1970. TCNJ JOURNAL OF STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP VOLUME XIV APRIL 2012 HETEROSEXUAL ANDROGYNY, QUEER HYPERMASCULINITY, AND HETERONORMATIVE INFLUENCE IN THE MUSIC OF FREDDIE MERCURY AND QUEEN Author: Rishi Malhotra Faculty Sponsor: Wayne Heisler, Department of Music ABSTRACT AND INTRODUCTION In a musical career that spanned two decades, Freddie Mercury served as lead vocalist and chief songwriter for the rock band, Queen. Initially regarded as a glam-metal outfit, they later experimented with more eclectic musical styles, notably the rock-opera fusion that characterized Mercury‟s widely successful composition, “Bohemian Rhapsody.” Mercury‟s use of imagery in live performances and music videos helped to shape responses to his lyrics and music. His change in appearance from androgynous, heterosexual rock star to “gay macho clone” led many to speculate that he was homosexual, although he never disclosed his orientation until shortly before his death. His protean appearance contrasted with his lyrical and musical consistency and provided alternative avenues for interpreting his music beyond the scope of heteronormativity. Many songs that were initially construed as reflecting his assumed heterosexuality were later interpreted as expressions of his homosexuality. Mercury has retained a legacy amongst admirers of differing sexual orientations, from members of the gay community during the early years of the AIDS epidemic to sports fans in stadiums around the world. Heteronormativity, according to Judith Butler, assumes heterosexuality as the norm, and deviation from heterosexuality as unnatural or abnormal. The apparent tendency to avoid decentralization of sexual identities and to default to heteronormative viewpoints is evident in the rock and pop music of Freddie Mercury and Queen.
