JOIN NOW! www.samashmusicinstitute.com RiCHIE & SAMMY ASH CELEBRATE THEIR 40-YEAR LOVE AFFAIR WITH GIBSON GUITARS My brother Sam and I have been Gibson guitar fanatics for over 40 years. We were lucky enough as small kids to visit the original Gibson guitar factory in Kalamazoo. In the late 1960’s we could be found in our old Hempstead, Long Island store doing all sorts of things with Gibson guitars - selling them, trading them, customizing them, and designing custom models. In fact, back in 1971 when Gibson only made the Les Paul Deluxe with the small humbuckers, we had them make 100 pieces with large humbucking pickups like the ’57 and ’58 models. That version became so popular that they starting making them for everybody as the Les Paul Standard we all know and love today. Back in the old days we would wait until closing and crank them up through Marshall stacks. This was before the Marshalls had master volume controls so we had to play them pretty loud to get the Jimmy Page/Eric Clapton crunchy sound we both loved. The big plate glass windows in the store would shake with every power chord! Sam remembers when everyone wanted DiMarzio pickups and brass hardware on their Gibsons because the pickups Gibson was making back then just did not have enough output or sustain. The tunomatic bridges came with plastic inserts that had to be replaced. Customers wanted the hotter instruments with better tone so we installed the stuff ourselves. We would pick out a decent playing Les Paul and change the pickups, nut, bridge and hardware. I guess these were the first “Hot Rodded” Gibsons. Back then they used to ship Gibsons with heavy-gauge flat-wound strings that nobody could play. We used to restring every guitar that came in with lighter gauge round-wounds until we finally convinced them to ship them with .009s from the factory. The truth is the quality of Gibson guitars in the late seventies and early eighties was pretty bad. They were owned by some big conglomerate that tried to figure out different ways of reducing their cost while they raised the prices. People began to get dissatisfied with the quality of these once legendary instruments. Then in the late eighties, our friend Henry Juszkiewicz, a guitar lover with a Harvard MBA bought the company. Henry knew that guitarists were looking for Gibson to return to the quality of the “golden era” of the late fifties and early sixties. If it weren’t for Henry’s vision and love of the instrument, Gibson would not be what it is today. Today Sam and I still have the same passion for the guitar only we get to exercise it on a much larger scale. We still work with the factories to make guitars that players really want. Dozens of guitars have come to market because of ideas that our guitar-buying team came up with; colors, pickup configurations, woods, and finishes. We make sure that every time you pick up a Gibson – or any other guitar – in one of our stores it is set up and “Gig Ready”. Both of my brothers, Sammy (COO) and David (Co-CEO) are personally in- volved in virtually every aspect of the Sam Ash business. Sam and I are still active players and big time guitar enthusiasts with over 100 guitars in each of our personal collections. David is the systems, operations, and legal guy. The three of us love going to the stores and talking “guitar” with our sales people and customers. And, of course, we are proud to offer one of the larg- est selections of new and used Gibsons anywhere. In fact, we are constantly scouring the used guitar universe for unique examples of Gibsons from the 50’s, 60’s 70’s, 80’s and beyond.

  • BOSS Introduces SY-1000 Guitar Synthesizer
Press Release FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE BOSS Introduces SY-1000 Guitar Synthesizer Next-Generation GK Synthesizer and Instrument Modeling Processor for Guitar and Bass Los Angeles, California, December 5, 2019 — BOSS introduces the SY-1000 Guitar Synthesizer, an advanced synthesizer and modeling processor for guitar and bass. Opening a bold new chapter in BOSS guitar synth innovation, the SY-1000 features a newly developed Dynamic Synth and refreshed versions of historic BOSS/Roland instrument modeling and synthesizer technologies. Backed by a cutting-edge sound engine, high-speed DSP, and evolved GK technology, the SY-1000 delivers the finest performance and most organic playing experience yet. BOSS and its parent company, Roland, have been at the forefront of guitar synthesizer development since 1977, when the landmark GR-500 first introduced guitar synthesis to the world. The SY-1000 is the most powerful guitar/bass synth processor to date, fusing decades of R&D with the latest software and hardware advancements. Leveraging custom DSP and GK independent string processing, the SY-1000 brings numerous musical advantages to players, including ultra-articulate tracking, lightning-fast response, instantly variable tuning, sound panning/layering, and more. SY-1000 users can build patches with three simultaneous instruments—each with a number of distinctive types to choose from—and combine them for an endless range of sounds. Fed by the processor’s 13-pin GK input, every instrument offers an extensive set of parameters for tone shaping, mixing, and tuning. A normal ¼-inch input is also available to blend in regular guitar/bass pickup sounds. Deep and expressive, the SY-1000’s Dynamic Synth takes guitar synthesis to a new level, allowing players to craft sounds never before possible.
