MIAA Ice Hockey Committee 2-year Pilot for Regular Season The MIAA BOD approved a 2-year pilot for Regular Season Overtime for the 2019-20 & 2020-21 school years. Leagues wishing to utilize this pilot regular season overtime must send confirmation to the attention of MIAA Ice Hockey Liaison Richard Pearson by Dec. 1, 2019 (Dec. 1, 2020). This overtime protocol would only be possible for an entire league but may be granted for an individual team who is independent and not part of a league.

Overtime Procedure At the conclusion of the third period, if teams are tied, overtime can be played if adopted by the league.  There will be a 1 minute intermission at the conclusion of the third period.  Goaltenders will switch ends for the entire overtime period.  Teams will play 4-on-4 for five minutes.  The team that scores first wins the game and the game is ended.  If no team scores during the overtime period the game is also ended.  The overtime period shall be considered part of the game and ALL unexpired penalties shall remain in force.  Timeouts cannot be used during the Overtime period(s). (Unused timeouts do not carry over into overtime)

Result of Game For season record and qualifications, all tied games at the end of the third period will be recorded as ties. The results of the overtime play, win or loss, cannot be used for any MIAA tournament qualification. This includes any automatic qualifier or league champion. For instance, if an overtime win would help a league decide the “league champion” but a tie would have had co-champions, the league would report co-champions for qualification into the MIAA tournament.

If a team is playing a non-league game, the AD’s and/or coaches should decide if overtime is to be played prior to the game.
