The 7 Habits & Sochi 2014 The 7 Habits & Sochi 2014 Bonus: Informational Text / Mini-Close Read Included Use the Sochi Winter Olympics to discuss the 7 Habits. Olympic athletes are true leaders in their fields of competition. There is much to be learned about leadership and the 7 Habits from the dedication and teamwork these athletes display. CC Standards & The 7 Habits For more information on the & Habits, see the link below: I can explain how people, events, or ideas are related. (RI.5.3) I can understand science and social studies words. (RI.5.4) http://www.theleaderinme.org/the-7-habits-for-kids I can understand 5th grade non- fiction. (RI.5.10) This is designed for students who are already familiar with the 7 Habits. It is designed for 3rd - 5th graders. What do I do with this resource? Before: At the beginning of the lesson quickly review the 7 Habits. Mention the Sochi Winter Olympics. B You might want to share a quick video about a famous Winter Olympic Athlete or team. EX: On February 22, 1980, the United States Olympic hockey team pulled off one of the greatest upsets in sports history, defeating the Soviet Union, 4-3. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qYscemhnf88 (Google Miracle on Ice Video) During: Divide students into 8 cooperative learning groups. Assign each group a spokesperson and a D note taker. Assign each group one of the 7 Habit “Question” pages in this resource. Have groups brainstorm ideas about the question on a large index card. Give learning groups 5 minutes to brainstorm. After 5 minutes, the spokesperson of each group should use the group’s notes to share thoughts/ideas with the whole group. If students in other groups would like to “add to” another groups ideas, allow them time to share. After: Cooperative learning groups should assign one member to compose the group answer on their sheet. The other members “feed” the writer information and peer check the answer for grammatical A errors. The entire group should participate in this process. The entire group must be satisfied with the composed answer. This is SYNERGY in action! *BONUS: The informational, mini-close read can be used at any time to introduce the students to the Sochi Winter Olympics. It is a review of informational text standards 3, 4, & 10. Habit #1 Be Proactive Olympic athletes are true leaders in their chosen fields of competition. How do these athletes use Habit #1? Close Read Notes This is not the first time that Russia has hosted the Olympic What do they have in common? Games. Moscow, Russia’s capital, hosted the Summer Olympic Games back in 1980. The 2014 Winter Games will be held in Sochi, Russia. There is a lot of planning and construction that has to be completed before the games. The construction of the Olympic buildings in Sochi began in 2009. Sochi’s opening and closing ceremonies will take place in the newly built Fisht Olympic Stadium. It seats 40,000 people. The dome-shaped stadium is named after the nearby Fisht (RI.5.4) & (L.5.4) Mountain. Those of us watching the games will get a view of Fisht and 2. They had a word artificial. plan from the very beginning. Olympic organizers have been stockpiling snow. They learned their lesson from the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver. During the Vancouver Winter Olympics, temperatures were too warm for snow. Organizers had to truck and fly in snow from nearby mountains. For Sochi, organizers gathered up 16 million cubic feet of snow—about how much water flows over Niagara Falls in four minutes. They have also used hundreds of snow-blowing machines to collect icy- cold water from two lakes. They turned that icy-cold water into tons of artificial snow. (RI.5.3) 3. What effect has the recent terrorist Security is also a top priority for both the attacks had on the Sochi Winter Games? Olympic officials and the Russian government. There have been several recent terrorist attacks in Russia. To combat this threat, tens of thousands of security officers have been assigned to Sochi. Their job is to make sure the Sochi Olympic Games remain peaceful and safe for both the athletes and the spectators..
