Redding and Westquarter Parish Church Summer 2012 Magazine Minister: Rev Dr J Mary Henderson 01324 621196 E-mail: [email protected] Session Clerk: Douglas Brown 01324 715981 Registered Scottish Charity No. SC008787 web site www.laurredwest-churches.org.uk Dear Friends in Redding and Westquarter TIME TO… WORK, REST AND PRAY No, this isn't an advertisement for some new, church-sponsored chocolate bar (delicious deep-fried), but the slogan for our 'Stewardship Weekend' in September. You may remember the "Count me In" campaign which took place across the Presbytery about 3½ years ago, just before I came as minister here. As well as giving people an opportunity to review their financial support for the church, it brought church members together for an evening of fellowship and celebration. It was never intended that this should be a one-off event, but an ongoing process of encouraging all church members to be fully involved in the life of the church, and to feel part of our extended family network. Now, with a bit of a push from the General Assembly of 2012, which decided that all churches should have an annual stewardship programme, we are going to begin this year by thinking about stewardship of time - how we make the most of the 24 hours that we have in each day, the seven days in each week. Some of us feel under constant pressure, and wish that there could be an extra hour in the day, or day in the week; for others, the hours pass slowly, as they pray each morning "would that it were evening", and each evening, "would that it were morning". (Deuteronomy 28:67). The last thing we want to do through any stewardship effort is to make church members feel more guilty than we already do (guilt is one of our great talents as Scots in the Calvinist tradition!). Coming to worship shouldn't be a duty or a chore; spending time working for the church should be something we do because we love the church and want it to flourish, not because our arms were twisted and no- one else would volunteer. So, rather than try to persuade church members to do more or give more, we are going to invite you - as many as possible from both congregations - to come and spend some quality time together, with no strings attached. This will happen on Sunday 23rd September, and the programme for the day will be as follows: 10:00 a.m. Worship in Laurieston Church 11:30 a.m. Worship in Redding and Westquarter Church 01:00 p.m. Lunch at Beancross (£10 per head; bookings by Sunday 16th) 02:30 p.m. Labyrinth - and time for reflection - in Laurieston Church Hall 04:30 p.m. Afternoon tea in Redding & Westquarter Church Hall 05:00 p.m. Communion in Redding & Westquarter Church You are welcome to opt in and out of the day as you please - but above all, you are welcome, as you are each Sunday and at any of the regular activities or special events planned for the autumn. Prayer has been described as 'wasting time with God'; I look forward to spending time with many of you this session… time to work, rest and pray. The session finished in May with the family service where the children reminded the congregation of the story of the lost sheep. They also held a sponsored walk in May which raised £597 for Christian Aid. Thanks to those who supported and helped with this event. The new session will be starting in September and we welcome children aged 3 and over to come along and join us in the hall on Sunday mornings at 11:30am. Weigh & Walk Jane Young is the lady with the scales. The Weigh and Walk group has an average of 12 members. When weather permits members go for a walk after the weigh in and then as always at Redding & Westquarter return for a well deserved cup of tea. The cost is £1 and the money raised goes to projects around the Church. The latest project is the garden. Rugrats Jenna Fairgreive and her son Ewan have been responsible for this group for the last 18 months. They meet every Tuesday morning from 10am until 12 and welcome children up to 5 years. There are on average 12 children who attend with their parents or grandparents. There are a wide selection of toys and activities for the children. It offers an opportunity for the children to inter act. It also affords anyone with a child under 5 a chance to meet and chat over a welcome cup of tea. The Rugrats held a successful cake and candy stall for Children in Need and raised a magnificent total of £116 This group is free of charge. Church Guild On the first Tuesday of every month there is a lunch that starts at 1pm The Guild has an interesting and varied programme with speakers to suit all interests. Some weeks it’s arts and crafts, on some we entertain ourselves with stories of the good old days or have a laugh with videos of the Redwesters. There is an opportunity at Christmas to meet with our friends from Laurieston Guild for Christmas festivities The Guild also has nights of entertainment in the Church with a warm welcome to non church members from the village and invites going out to friends of all the churches in the surrounding districts. A successful nearly new sale was also held in the summer with Guild funds getting a boost. The surplus stock was donated to the Debra shop The Guild is keen to support other needy causes and has fund raisers throughout the year to aid world disasters. The Guild is open to both men and women so why not come along and you do not need to be a church member to attend. Martha’s Cafe The café serves and supplies home baking specially baked by this motley crew Helen Baird, Jean Risk, Beth Bachen, June Simpson, Jane Young with Helen Sneddon (missing from the photo shoot.) Martha`s Café starts after the Guild finishes and runs fortnightly from May until August with the first café raising funds for Christian Aid and the last one for this year took the form of a Strawberry Tea with the proceeds going to The Royal Blind School. Although too late for this year we look forward to your company next year to share in the friendly fellowship that is Tuesdays Café. The Café Team is looking for new members for next year. Please don’t all volunteer at once! Zumba Dancing Come along and get into shape for the party season with Marie Gallagher a Licensed Zumba Instructor.
