  • Methods of Multivariate Analysis to Uncover Socio-Economic Differences Among Spatial-Economics Entities
METHODS OF MULTIVARIATE ANALYSIS TO UNCOVER SOCIO-ECONOMIC DIFFERENCES AMONG SPATIAL-ECONOMICS ENTITIES Paper prepared for the 45th Congress of the European Regional Science Association Volos, Greece, August 30th-Semptember 3rd, 2006 Ivana Rasic Bakaric Institute of Economics Zagreb Trg. J. F. Kennedya 7, 10000 Zagreb, Croatia [email protected] Abstract Main aim of regional policy is to reduce regional disparities. There is now doubt that action to tackle regional disparities is needed in Croatia. Main problem is the definition of region as a subject of regional policy. After discussion about definition of region and main criteria which should be considered during the process of establishment of regions, the paper will present one of the methodologies for spatial-economic entities' classification. The methodology will be used on the working sample of several Croatian counties. The classification will be obtained through use of multivariate statistical methods, and it is based on a wide number of demographic, economic, educations, employment indicators. Results leads to the identification of several axes of socio- economic characterisation, and the division of the observed territory into several homogenous clusters, regions with different degree of development. The main conclusion is that socio-economic reorients uncovered with this methodology provide useful characterisation and division of the territory, for policy making purpose. JEL Classification: C49, R12, R58 Keywords: homogeneous regions, factor and cluster analysis, regional policy 1 Introduction A precondition to formulating implementing and monitoring of regional policy measures is the existence of established regional boundaries. Division proposals depend on criteria used. Politicians and various professions use different criteria, in order to achieve the optimal territorial structure that could enable same or at least similar effects of certain policy measures within the same territorial unit, and could be easily monitored.

  • Split - Milna (Brač)
Day 1: Split - Milna (Brač) Milna is the most protected as well the most beautiful port on the island of Brač. Protected from stronger winds and refreshed by the maestral wind of summer afternoons, it is the ideal haven for people and boats alike. Milna is situated at the bottom of a spacious cove at the western coast of Brač. Crystal blue sea, shades of centennial pine forests, sunlit facades built of Brač stone, ideal diving conditions, domestic and healthy food - all the reasons for coming to this beautiful Mediterranean town. There is a large selection of excellent fish restaurant, pizzerias and many caffe bars in Milna, situated in the immediate vicinity of the sea. ACI marina Milna is located in the southeastern part of the Milna cove, adjacent to the town. Day 2: Milna - Stari Grad or Hvar Town (Hvar) Stari Grad is the oldest city in Croatia, a peer of Aristotle. It is situated at the end of a bay 4nm deep, along the northwest coast of Hvar. Due to its central position, it has been a seamen's sanctuary for centuries; today, the Stari Grad cove is an obligatory stop for sailors cruising the Adriatic. The island’s hub and busiest destination, Hvar Town is estimated to draw around 20,000 people a day in the high season. It’s odd that they can all fit in the small bay town, where 13th-century walls surround beautifully ornamented Gothic palaces and traffic-free marble streets, but fit they do. Visitors wander along the main square, explore the sights on the winding stone streets, swim on the numerous beaches Read more: http://www.lonelyplanet.com/croatia/dalmatia/hvar-island#ixzz3UFy4ajGC The city is surrounded by vineyards, olive tree orchards and pine woods.
