His thoughts on how to play rugby years ago for Manchester against Wakefield. mirror the Australian’s. Since taking up the coaching mantle at Wilmslow two seasons ago, he has been unafraid to give youth its chance, on this occasion giving a first appearance to the promising eighteen year old lock, Harrison Lewis. As a young lad, his first love had been soccer but all Heagerty has encouraged the players to go out and play the kind of exciting adventurous rugby that they want to play. When they have come unstuck, he believes, it’s because they’ve been prepared to give things a go, things which only that began to change when he went to King’s. There impetuous and exuberant young players would try. We saw all of that in this game but we also saw, like the Australians he took up rugby and it wasn’t long before the young will have seen against England, that you have to have a front five to contest the close quarter stuff effectively and it was in Swindells was selected by Chesire in the days when this regard that the Wolves came uncomfortably close to being undone. It wasn’t anything like the same kind of battering they had an U13 side and then played for every county youth side up to U21s. Our decided that he was destined to become a full back. execution of the game plan let us down was how he succinctly described the performance afterwards. It was in this position that he was called up by England U21 and played on thirty occasions for The Kirkby Lonsdale side possessed none of the pace and invention of the Wolves but they did have a gritty pack of forwards, who were not about to be pushed about or aside in scrum and lineout. They lacked any kind of play maker, their Cheshire, in his last season 1999 being part of the side which won the County Championship against tactics were one dimensional, pick and drive in close quarter play, but even if they were thumped backwards in the tackle, Cornwall. There was also a season in New Zealand, where he made the Southland provincial side in they knew how to hold on to the ball and to patiently build their position again. At the base of the scrum, scrum half 1990 to play against Otago and an outing with the Barbarians. It is as a Manchester player though that Hadwin and No. 8 Shepherd were hounded throughout by Wolves scrum half Chris Lee, whose combative defence and he will be principally remembered despite spells at Sale and Waterloo. tackling caught them in possession again and again. He justly earned the Gusto Man of the Match award. It wasn’t that Kirkby won much more first phase ball than the Wolves, they didn’t, but they kept hold of it far more effectively and consequently they enjoyed about 70% possession and most of the territory. To add to the Wolves frustration, referee He started his coaching career with Manchester Colts in 2001 and shortly afterwards was persuaded by Simon Mackeen saw fit to penalise them three times as often as their opponents for technical close quarter offences. He stayed on when Steve Peters was appointed club coach but unduly hard on defenders competing for the ball at the breakdown. Nevertheless, the referee is the sole judge of fact and it’s up to the players to come to terms with that. then he was offered a position on the coaching staff back at Manchester by Dave Baldwin. It was too good an opportunity to turn down and together, he and Baldwin guided Manchester to what was then The Wolves scored after just two National 1 and is now The Championship. The second half started with the Wolves the top of this league again before the end of the season. Being honest, we just need a bit more depth trying to put pace on the ball from their own half of the field but succeeding only in coughing it up in the tackle. THIS WEEK’S PREDICTIONS

Last time out it was a full house with six out of seven and one halved.

Altrincham Kersal v Kirkby Lonsdale : Not much to say about this one. I doubt that Kersal will allow Kirkby to ruffle their feathers the way we allowed them to. Kersal by 50 plus.

Broughton Park v Burnage : I fancy this one to be a towsy affair. If Park are at full strength then they could be just the side to get in amongst the Burnage chickens, who so far have not won on the road by more than one score. Unbeaten Burnage are the obvious favourites but I think Park could be the side to spoil their record. Home win.

Just identify yourself as a Vale of Lune v Sandbach : Vale really have to win this one to stay in sight of Burnage and Wilmslow Rugby Club member Kersal and I expect them to do so.

by producing either your valid West Park v Northwich : Anyone fancy West Park at home to beat Northwich. Not me. 2010- 11 membership handbook at the following retail outlets or Wigton v New Brighton : Winter is upon us and I don’t think New Brighton from the well the participating retailer’s card to drained light Wirral soils will fancy this one if it’s a heavy pitch together with proper Cumbrian weather. Wigton seem to be getting to grips with this league so I expect them to receive substantial discounts off record another home win. listed prices. Wilmslow v Liverpool St. Helens : You would think that with these two sides, it’ll be one or other of the back line ups that’ll win it and that will probably depend on which side gets Oddbins most of the ball. If the Wolves can retain sufficient ball in contact and deny their opponents Water Lane, Wilmslow too much possession, then they should prevail but if LSH end up with 60 –70% possession, it’s hard to see them losing. I’m backing Giles Heagerty to get his side’s tactics right. Home win. Chelsea Flowers Chapel Lane, Wilmslow Wirral v Leigh : An interesting clash between two sides with the potential to improve. (shop sales only) Wirral won at Kirkby last week and that could just galvanise them into a winning run.
