  • Tackling Challenging Issues in Shakespeare for Young Audiences
Shrews, Moneylenders, Soldiers, and Moors: Tackling Challenging Issues in Shakespeare for Young Audiences DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Elizabeth Harelik, M.A. Graduate Program in Theatre The Ohio State University 2016 Dissertation Committee: Professor Lesley Ferris, Adviser Professor Jennifer Schlueter Professor Shilarna Stokes Professor Robin Post Copyright by Elizabeth Harelik 2016 Abstract Shakespeare’s plays are often a staple of the secondary school curriculum, and, more and more, theatre artists and educators are introducing young people to his works through performance. While these performances offer an engaging way for students to access these complex texts, they also often bring up topics and themes that might be challenging to discuss with young people. To give just a few examples, The Taming of the Shrew contains blatant sexism and gender violence; The Merchant of Venice features a multitude of anti-Semitic slurs; Othello shows characters displaying overtly racist attitudes towards its title character; and Henry V has several scenes of wartime violence. These themes are important, timely, and crucial to discuss with young people, but how can directors, actors, and teachers use Shakespeare’s work as a springboard to begin these conversations? In this research project, I explore twenty-first century productions of the four plays mentioned above. All of the productions studied were done in the United States by professional or university companies, either for young audiences or with young people as performers. I look at the various ways that practitioners have adapted these plays, from abridgments that retain basic plot points but reduce running time, to versions incorporating significant audience participation, to reimaginings created by or with student performers.

Press Contact: Harry Forbes 212.560.8027, [email protected] Lindsey Bernstein 212.560.6609, [email protected] Great Performances: The Hollow Crown Bios Tom Hiddleston After he was seen in a production of A Streetcar Named Desire by Lorraine Hamilton of the notable actors’ agency Hamilton Hodell, Tom Hiddleston was shortly thereafter given his first television role in Stephen Whittaker’s adaptation of Nicholas Nickleby (2001) for ITV, starring Charles Dance, James D’Arcy and Sophia Myles. Roles followed in two one-off television dramas co-produced by HBO and the BBC. The first was Conspiracy (2001), a film surrounding the story of the Wannsee Conference in 1942 to consolidate the decision to exterminate the Jews of Europe. The film prompted Tom’s first encounter with Kenneth Branagh who took the lead role of Heydrich. The second project came in 2002 in the critically acclaimed and Emmy Award- winning biopic of Winston Churchill The Gathering Storm, starring Albert Finney and Vanessa Redgrave. Tom played the role of Randolph Churchill, Winston’s son, and cites that particular experience – working alongside Finney and Redgrave, as well as Ronnie Barker, Tom Wilkinson, and Jim Broadbent – as extraordinary; one that changed his perspective on the art, craft and life of an actor. Tom graduated from RADA in 2005, and within a few weeks was cast as Oakley in the British independent film Unrelated by first-time director Joanna Hogg. Unrelated tells the story of a woman in her mid-40s who arrives alone at the Italian holiday home of an extended bourgeois family.

THURSDAY 13 SEPTEMBER 2018 Press Release DONMAR WAREHOUSE ANNOUNCES TWO DONMAR DEBUTS BY RISING DIRECTING TALENTS TO COMMENCE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR JOSIE ROURKE’S FINAL SEASON ● Donmar Warehouse’s outgoing Artistic Director Josie Rourke announces today two new productions as part of her final season, both with rising directorial talents at the helm: The UK premiere of Lynn Nottage’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play Sweat, directed by former Donmar Resident Assistant Director Lynette Linton; and an original stage adaptation of Peter Strickland’s chilling film Berberian Sound Studio, written for the stage by Joel Horwood, marking the directorial debut for Donmar Associate Artist Tom Scutt and starring actor Tom Brooke. Josie Rourke’s final production at the Donmar will open in April 2019 and will be announced later this year. ● Lynette Linton will make her Donmar debut as director in December with the UK premiere of Lynn Nottage’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play Sweat. Nottage spent a number of years with the inhabitants of Reading, Pennsylvania - one of the poorest cities in America – to write Sweat. It powerfully chronicles the story of how the USA has reached its current political and cultural situation. Lynette was previously a Resident Assistant Director at the Donmar, working on productions including Belleville, The Lady from the Sea and The York Realist. The Resident Assistant Director scheme supports artists early in their career to develop their skills and alumni include Artistic Director Josie Rourke, Rupert Goold, Jamie Lloyd, Sacha Wares and Simon Evans. ● Donmar Associate Artist Tom Scutt will make his directorial debut in February with an adaptation of Peter Strickland’s chilling film Berberian Sound Studio, written for the stage by Joel Horwood.

  • MIXED MARRIAGE by St John Ervine
Press Information 31Productions in association with Neil McPherson for the Finborough Theatre presents MIXED MARRIAGE by St John Ervine. Directed by Sam Yates. Designed by Richard Kent. Lighting Design by David Plater. Music and Sound Design by Alex Baranowski. The first London production for 90 years of St John Ervine’s searing Belfast tragedy Mixed Marriage, first seen at the Abbey Theatre, Dublin, plays for a four-week season from Tuesday, 4 October 2011 (Press Night: Thursday, 6 October 2011 at 7.30pm) at the multi-award-winning Finborough Theatre. As the city's factories come out on strike, John Rainey, the respected head of a Protestant family, acts to calm the sectarian tension being stirred up by politicians for their own ends. On the streets, Rainey successfully unites Catholic and Protestant against the machinations of the factory owners, the nationalists and the Orangemen. But at home, passions rise when Rainey discovers that his son wants to marry the beautiful, innocent Nora, a Catholic... Set in Ireland before partition, Mixed Marriage is a poetic tragedy – leavened with earthy humour – which dissects class and religious sectarianism through the breakdown of one ordinary family. It was a groundbreaking success in its time and established Ervine as a great Irish writer. This production is another Finborough Theatre rediscovery, following in the footsteps of such sell-out successes as J.M. Barrie's What Every Woman Knows and Quality Street, Graham Greene's The Potting Shed and Emlyn Williams' Accolade. Director Sam Yates is Artistic Associate at Royal and Derngate Theatres, Northampton. He has been Associate Director to Michael Grandage, Trevor Nunn, Jamie Lloyd, Josie Rourke and Phyllida Lloyd.

In the following pages, you will find a wealth of information to give you a closer look at the process of bringing this production from page to stage. Conor McPherson is widely considered one of the greatest living playwrights in the English language, and THE WEIR is perhaps his best known play, written when Conor was just 26. After an initial run of performances at the Royal Court, the first production of the play transferred to the West End and won an Olivier award for Best New Play in 1999. It was named as one of the 100 most significant plays of the 20th Century in a National Theatre poll. The Donmar’s production marks the first major London revival of this modern masterpiece. This guide aims to set the play and the production in context, through conversations with members of the cast and creative team, as well as offering a glimpse into the world that inspired McPherson to write the play.
