Camp Theme Book II -Final Camp Themes Book II Compiled by: Dana Weatherell April 2003 1 Introduction Putting Book One together, was my Stage Two goal. Book two grew from the popularity of the first one and the many wonderful ideas from Guiders all over the world who I communicate with through a mailing list on the Internet that just keep coming! Thank you to all who shared your camp ideas and experiences that gave this book the content to work with. I have to also personally thank both Joanne Chase and Tracey Gowan for their help with this edition. I ran into a little glich and needed someone to proof it for me. They both took time out of their busy lives to proof this book and come up with wording to fill in for the little magazine bug that showed up everywhere (don’t ask). Also a big Thanks to Saskia Morton and Anne Flood who are publishing this on their sites for your easy reference. Thank you all for your help. Without it this would not be published in April of 2003! Book two is more than twice the size of the first one and I hope that you all enjoy it and use it till the pages start to fall apart. Please share with anyone you would like however, please give credit where credit is due. These ideas are not mine, I just put them all together into this one resource. As with the first, some of the themes presented are fully detailed camps while others are just enough to tweak your imagination and get you started. Survivor seemed to be the most popular topic. There are over 45 pages of ideas here including fully planned camps, activities and campfires. The book is over 100 pages long so be considerate of your toner cartridge! You may want to review the index to find a theme you are interested in. I won’t promise a third edition however; I do have a few that didn’t make this cut again so who knows what the future may bring. If you have any theme ideas or a list of helpful websites you’d like to add, feel free to contact me. I should note that there is not one standard dictionary used. As we are from all over I left most spelling as they were so you may see color or colour. We all know the right way to spell it right ;-) Keep on camping everyone and have a blast doing it! This past weekend we had a survivor camp with 8 of our girls. They had a blast. We started Friday night when they picked names for their tribes, received their fabric ties/bandanas and made a tribe poster. I had brought Barbies to use for the Barbie raft challenge someone posted and they proceeded to cloth Barbie in scraps from their fabric. Saturday morning they received their first mail. Their challenges for the morning were to following a compass trail. Build a shelter, build a fire, and signal for food when completed. They were allowed to take 2 items per girl. We had added tarps to their kit lists but we still had one group of 4 girls who had no tarp. We bartered some extra chores for a spare tarp. We completely forgot about the Barbie raft challenge after lunch but played a wilderness trivia game. It the girls couldn’t come up with the answer they had to pick a number and eat the food behind the door. The items were a snail, sardine, taro root, tomatillo, dog biscuit, Hershey’s kiss, molasses toffee and coconut toffee. The first girl to go picked the snail. She took it looked at it for a second and popped it into her mouth and chewed, never even wanting water. It was pretty impressive. We also had a girl gag on the dog biscuit which put a small damper on the festivities but we got them all back into the game after a couple of minutes. We made dinner for the girls using the menus posted, rat meat loaf, rice, salad, and kitty litter cake. One of their favourite parts of the whole thing was the voting. They voted for the most helpful and the most ingenious. They would go into the other room write the name on a piece of paper, fold it in half and put into the container. They did this with much fanfare talking to the imaginary camera. When we were done they wanted to do more voting even though we didn’t have any more prizes. They kept making new category suggestions. Sunday we let them sleep and have the day to themselves. We were impressed at how well the girls all worked together, there were no little cliques. They pushed the bunks together so they had eight bunks making a square with the heads all together. It was really a great camp. *~*~*~*~**~*~*~* From [email protected]: (a report on the Pathfinders Survival Day) I would have to say a job well done to all those that made this event possible. Thank you so much. All of the 221st Port Credit Pathfinders had a great time. The event was loud, energetic and full of fun activities – just like Pathfinders and Leaders like. We were split up into 8 tribes of approx. 30 (I ended up in a tribe with none of my girls) which encouraged us to make new friends (I happened to meet a Pathfinder guider who is just across the highway in Applewood & of course we exchange phone #’s and email addresses for future get togethers). First we had introductions and standard safety rules. Then there was a wonderful motivational speaker/actress who was hilarious. She really got their attention and reached into the life of a teenager and gave them 4 points on how to succeed in life. (Definite relationship challenge there). After that we split up into the bead colour on our pins (These were given to us to distribute to our units in our registration package) – our tribe. From there it became a round robin in different locations throughout the school, so I’m just going to list the events as they occurred for the YELLOW SUNBUROS. From there is 1) Meet your fellow tribe members, cut 3 – 1”x 24” strips of yellow cloth to make headbands, & make a poster/banner to represent your tribe 2) Make a chant, play, song, etc. to represent your tribe and

The current research is designed to legitimize the inclusion of negative experiences in the existing theoretical framework, which suggests that certain types of positive touristic experiences facilitate one’s authenticity. Based on original existential theory and current developments in the field, this study engages qualitative content analysis of travel blogs to detect the categories of negative touristic experiences that that evoke individual’s sense of self. As a result, a set of such categories emerges and demonstrates that, first, negative and positive contributing experiences may be classified similarly and, second, that negative experiences catalyze the sense of liminality, which, in turn, is a necessary requirement for the comprehension of existential authenticity. Skeleton Crew is Stephen King's second collection of short fiction, published in 1985. It contains 22 works, which include 19 short stories, a novella ( The Mist ) and two poems ("For Owen" and "Paranoid: A Chant"). In addition, it features an introduction by the author, in which King describes the benefits that writing short fiction has given him, and a section of notes at the end, in which King describes how some of the stories came to be. Most of the works in Skeleton Crew were previously published in horror anthologies and magazines, and represent a body of work spanning seventeen years. This paper is an invitation to go beyond what may commonly be thought of as a uniform looking-glass so as to discover King’s particular treatment of the body. Far from shying away from sexuality, the American writer depicts it in an ambivalent or disguised manner (Thinner, Mr. Mercedes, Christine, Misery, Cycle of the Werewolf). If the female body is mainly connected with the taboos of rape and incest (Gerald’s Game, Dolores Claiborne, Bag of Bones, Under the Dome), or with ungenderisation (The Tommynockers, Rose Madder), the notion of monstrosisation can nevertheless be applied to both male and female bodies (The Shining, Desperation, “The Raft,” “Survivor Type”). Oscillating between hypermonstration and avoidance, King pulls the strings of the fragmentation, even of the silencing of the body. The fissure impregnating the characters’ identity and bodies is enlightened by the shattering of the very connection between signifiers and signified, inserting the reader into a state of non-knowledge: a mesmerising dance of disembodied bodies within disembodied texts. Patterson Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Donald McQuarie Dr. Ewart Skinner © 2007 Carolyn Lea All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Ellen Berry, Advisor This is a polemical dissertation which seeks to serve as an intervention into the theoretical debates and tensions within cultural studies. These debates, which have taken place over the last few decades, have centered on the populist bent within cultural studies, the turn away from the concerns of political economy, and the influence of French theories that emphasize signification, play, and relativism. At stake in these debates is our way of understanding the world and imagining it differently. I argue that the celebratory direction found in much of the work by cultural studies scholars in which resistance, subversion and transgression are located in all things popular has led to an expressivist politics which lacks explanatory power and is symptomatic of a loss of political will. This dissertation critiques three particular directions that exemplify the celebratory turn: claims regarding transgression; claims regarding audience activity; and celebratory accounts of consumption. Chapter one provides an exposition of the debates that have plagued cultural studies, laying the ground for later arguments. Chapter two provides an introduction to reality television which is enlisted as a cultural symptom through which to interrogate weaknesses in theoretical positions (in chapters three through five) adopted by cultural studies scholars and strengths in alternative theoretical legacies.

    Appendix: I A Glance at Stephen King’s Life Illustration 20: Stephen King 182 Stephen Edwin King was born on September 21, 1947 in Portland, Maine, USA, to Donald Edwin King and Nellie Ruth Pillsbury. When he was two years old, his father (born David Spansky) deserted his family and Ruth raised Stephen and his brother David by herself, sometimes under great financial strain. The family moved to Ruth’s home town of Durham, Maine but also spent brief periods in Fort Wayne, Indiana and Stratford, Connecticut. King attended Durham Elementary Grammar School and then nearby Lisbon High School. He has been writing since an early age. When in school, he wrote stories plagiarised from what he’d been reading at the time, and sold them to his friends. This was not popular among his teachers, and he was forced to return his profits when this was discovered. From 1966 to 1970, King studied English at the University of Maine at Orono. There, King wrote a column in the school magazine called “King’s Garbage Truck”. At the university, he also met Tabitha Spruce who he married in 1971. King took on odd jobs to pay for his studies. One of them was at an industrial laundry, from which he drew material for the short story “The Mangler”. This period in his life is readily evident in the second part of Hearts in Atlantis After finishing his university studies with a Bachelor of Science in English and obtaining a certificate to teach high school, King took a job as an English teacher at Hampden Academy in Hampden, Maine.

    Into the Wild Unit written by Jamie Zartler and Mary Rodeback Edited by Alex Gordin Into the Wild: Journeys to Self-Discovery Introduction to Unit: Jon Krakauer’s Into the Wild tells a story that readily engages students. A noble rebel, Chris McCandless is the kind of young adult many teenagers can relate to, and his journey raises questions about identity, knowledge, adventure, and risk-taking that make the narrative more than a little compelling. In this extensive unit, McCandless’ story serves as an entry point to a rich range of questions about America, the spirit, nature, and the American literature (particularly the Transcendentalists). We believe that this material is rich enough to serve as the focal point of an entire semester and speculate about pairing this main text with Huckleberry Finn or The Catcher in the Rye, for example. We are also considering the possibility of using the knowledge gained from this unit to be the prelude to independent student research and writing. Within this quarter length unit, students read an engaging and scintillating non-fictional text, several short stories, historically significant essays, and a variety of poems. Essential questions that provided the impetus for the curricular unit are as follows: What is the relationship between nature and the American identity? What does it mean to be a rebel? What is the relationship between self and society? To what extent is community essential to happiness? Students have multiple opportunities to be poets, critical thinkers, and writers of essays. We use the RAFT model to provide students an opportunity to express their understanding and ideas in a format other than prose (or in prose as the case may be).
