Boone, Advisor Johanna Devaney Anna Gawboy Copyright by Dana Lauren DeVlieger 2016 Abstract “Whiskey in the Jar” is a traditional Irish song that is performed by musicians from many different musical genres. However, because there are influential recordings of the song performed in different styles, from folk to punk to metal, one begins to wonder what the role of the song’s Irish heritage is and whether or not it retains a sense of Irish identity in different iterations. The current project examines a corpus of 398 recordings of “Whiskey in the Jar” by artists from all over the world. Red Cardell Par Jacques-Olivier Badia, publié le 29/10/2010 Le mot « éclectisme » n’a rien de vain pour Philippe Pagès. Qu’on en juge : depuis le début pas si lointain de la saison, Le Bijou aura programmé conte et chants africains, le flamenco alternatif d’Equidad Barès, les provocations craspouètes de Didier Super, de la musique kurde, de la chanson dite française et en tout cas toulousaine à bretelles (d’accordéon), Didier Labbé jazzant comme jamais, la fureur tzigano-croate de Zaragraf, le délicat Bertrand Belin, du reggae-blues nonchalant avec Kilembé et les corsitudes d’Alba. Il y fallait bien un peu de celtitude, pour le côté ethno-régional, et de rock pour faire bon poids. C’est chose faite avec la venue cette semaine de Red Cardell, trio breton qui vint déjà dans les lieux au temps lointain où l’on pouvait y danser – une lurette, et belle… Paint it red On se disait bien, aussi, que ça faisait penser à quelque chose malgré la débagoulade de notes tombées d’un accordéon à l’accent lointainement celtisant : le riff blues-rock, les paroles en angliche, le côté mauvais garçon mid-sixties… Mais il fallut arriver à la fin pour comprendre : « I wanna see it painted, painted, painted black », ça vous rappelle quelque chose ? Pas exactement les Rolling Stones pour autant (qui, à notre connaissance, n’y ont jamais chanté « we used to dream about the revolution »), mais le même esprit et la même famille – de Bretagne en Grande-Bretagne, n’est-ce pas… Le ton, en tout cas, était donné face à un public acquis d’avance, la famille au premier rang, une poignée de vieux fans braillards au fond, ici et là quelques-uns qui se souvenaient encore de Red Cardell version 93. -
