  • The Legend of Big Klu Still Lives Large
Fifty years later: The legend of Big Klu still lives large By Paul Ladewski Staff Writer Posted June 9, 2009 The area once referred to as Argo is located eight miles west of old Comiskey Park, a decidedly blue‐collar town known for a corn milling and processing plant that is among the largest of its kind. As the barely 10,000 residents would tell you, it has the odor to prove it, too. But to many Chicago baseball fans, especially those on the South Side, the location is known for something of far greater significance. It also was home to Ted Kluszewski, the 6‐foot‐ 2, 225‐pound mountain of a man with the famous 15‐inch biceps, whose legend in White Sox history will live even longer than the home runs he hit decades ago. “I remember the first time that I saw Ted in those cut‐off sleeves," former White Sox pitcher Billy Pierce still recalls his trademark style nearly a half century later. "They were good‐sized. He was a big man. A big man." Says Bill "Moose" Skowron, the former White Sox and New York Yankees first baseman who crossed paths with Big Klu many times in their careers. "Everybody knows Ted could hit a baseball. What some people don't know is that he was a helluva first baseman and a helluva nice guy, too. And he always played in those short‐sleeve shirts. He was built like a rock, you know." How can the South Side of Chicago ever forget? There Kluszewski will forever be remembered as one of the greatest Brinks jobs in White Sox history, a local boy who made very, very good one unforgettable season.

  • Cincinnati Reds'
Cincinnati Reds Press Clippings October 16, 2015 THIS DAY IN REDS HISTORY 1990 - Eric Davis becomes the 22nd player to homer in his first World Series at-bat. CINCINNATI ENQUIRER Who plays left field for Reds in '16? By John Fay / Cincinnati Enquirer / [email protected] / @johnfayman This is the fourth in a periodic series looking at the questions the Reds face this offseason. Today's question: Who plays left field? I'll give you a firm "I don't know" on this one. The Reds have roughly as many candidates for left field as the Republicans have presidential hopefuls. The difference is the Reds have no clear frontrunner. Eight players started a game in left for the Reds this year. The two who played the most — Marlon Byrd (86 games) and Skip Schumaker (32) — are gone. Byrd was traded away; Schumaker is a free agent. The others who started: Adam Duvall (15), Ivan DeJesus Jr. (14), Jason Bourgeois (6), Brennan Boesch (5), Chris Dominguez (2) and Kristopher Negron (2). The Reds also plan to play catcher Devin Mesoraco in left some in spring. And you've got to think Eugenio Suarez will get some time there as well. Minor-leaguers Jesse Winker and Yorman Rodriguez could be in the mix as well. Of the guys who played there last year, Duvall, 26, probably has the best chance to win the job. He hit .204 with five home runs and nine RBI in 64 at-bats with the Reds. He hit .281 with 30 home runs and 87 RBI in Triple-A.

Cincinnati Reds Press Clippings January 30, 2019 THIS DAY IN REDS HISTORY 1919-The Reds hire Pat Moran as manager, replacing Christy Mathewson, when no word is received from him while his is in France with the U.S. Army. Moran would manage the Reds until 1923, collecting a 425-329 record 1978-Former Reds executive, Larry MacPhail, is elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum 1997-The Reds sign Deion Sanders to a free agent contract, for the second time ESPN.COM Busy Reds in on Realmuto, but would he make them a contender? Jan. 29, 2019 Buster Olney ESPN Senior Writer The last time the Cincinnati Reds won a postseason series, Joey Votto was 12 years old, Bret Boone was the team's second baseman and the organization had only recently drafted his kid brother, a third baseman out of the University of Southern California named Aaron Boone. Since the Reds swept the Dodgers in a Division Series in 1995, they have built more statues than they have playoff wins. In recent years, a Dodger said he was sick of Kirk Gibson -- not because of anything Gibson had done, but because the team had felt the need to roll out the highlight of Gibson's epic '88 World Series home run, in lieu of subsequent championship success. Similarly, most of the biggest stars in the Reds organization continue to be Johnny Bench, Joe Morgan, Pete Rose and Tony Perez, as well as announcer Marty Brennaman, who recently announced he will retire after the upcoming season.
