  • Our Lady of Aparecida: Her Story and My Story
Our Lady of Aparecida: Her Story and My Story Back in 1717, when Brazil was a Portuguese colony, local governors had a great importance in society. When the new governor of Sao Paulo and Minas Gerais was traveling by the village of Guaretingueta, the local authorities wanted to offer a banquet to the new dignitary. It happened that at the time, there was barely any fish in the Paraiba River. Nonetheless, the three fishermen were determined to catch some fish. After trying all night long, they cast their nets for the last time. It was then that in pulling their nets they found a small terracotta statue of Our Lady, without its head. Puzzled by the strange catch, they threw their nets again and caught the head of the statue. Filled with amazement at the finding, they threw their nets again. This time, there was such a large catch of fish that they had to go ashore to ask for help to pull the net. One of the fishermen brought the statue to his house and there he built a little chapel. The popular devotion grew very quickly as many graces were granted by the intercession of Our Lady and many miracles happened. In 1745, they built a shrine under the name of Nossa Senhora da Conceição Aparecida. From that time on, she is referred to by the nickname of Aparecida (the one who appeared). As the population of Brazil increased, so did the number of Catholics devoted to Our Lady of Aparecida. In 1946, when the shrine could not hold the number of visitors, they began to build what would become the second largest basilica in the world today (second only to St.

  • Journey Into Marian Spirituality Judith Best, SSND March, 2008
Journey into Marian Spirituality Judith Best, SSND March, 2008 Reflecting on Mary’s role in my life has been like watching a lovely rosebud unfolding. Mary grounds me in my community, church, family and Mother Earth. In sharing this reflection I raise several questions that reflect my desire to be faithful to church teaching and listen to the Spirit in the dialogue of my contemporaries. Growing up in a Pre-Vatican II Church My life has been under Mary’s care since my birth: others told me I was born while the Angelus was ringing. Mary’s presence is our family was found in a lovely painting of the Madonna and Child that graced our living room. My mother’s Irish energy often included encouragement to pray to Mary when in doubt. She was also aware of the “wee people” whose presence in our lives was a reality to me. My father’s quiet, hard working German personality was the opposite of my Irish mother; but both found solace in saying the rosary. Theirs was a “stormy” relationship, as my mother described their marriage. Mary’s presence was like calming background music that no one really listened to, but she seemed to keep family tensions from destroying us. Meeting the School Sisters of Notre Dame as my high school teachers I was attracted to their dedication and good humor. But there was not much support from my family for a religious vocation. When I wanted to enter the School Sisters of Notre Dame my parents were not pleased. They took me to Europe to try to change my mind.

  • Our Lady of Good Counsel
Our Lady of Good Counsel According to tradition, in the year 1467, in the midst of the festivities for the Feast of Saint Mark, the townfolk suddenly heard "exquisite music." A mysterious cloud was then said to have descended and obliterated an unfinished wall of the parish church. In front of the populace, the cloud dissipated and a beautiful fresco, no thicker than a carte-de-visite and no more than eighteen inches square, of the Virgin Mary and the Christ Child was revealed. It was widely believed that it had been miraculously transported from a church in Scutari, Albania. On November 17, 1682, Pope Innocent XI had the picture solemnly crowned. In 1753, Pope Benedict XIV established the Pious Union of Our Lady of Good Counsel. More than any other pope, Leo XIII, was deeply attached to this devotion. On April 22, 1903, that same Pope included the invocation "Mater boni consilii" in the Litany of Loreto. In 1939, Venerable Pope Pius XII placed his pontificate under the maternal care of Our Lady of Good Counsel and composed a prayer to her. Her feast is celebrated on April 26th. Our Lady of Aparecida Our Lady of Aparecida appeared to 3 fishermen in Brazil (Domingos Garcia, Filipe Pedroso, and João Alves) in October 1717. The fishermen prayed to Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception that God would grant a good catch. The fishermen, having a run of bad luck, cast their nets in the River Paraiba and dragged up a headless statue of the Virgin Mary. They also salvaged the head and, according to the legend, then netted plenty of fish.
