Second seeds Cai/Fu into semi-final of badminton men's doubles at Beijing Olympics 16:05, August 13, 2008 Second seeds Cai Yun and Fu Haifeng from China didn't face much challenge from Howard Bach and Bob Malaythong from the United States in an Olympic badminton quarter-final, crushing them 21-9, 21-10 here on Wednesday. The U.S. pair enjoyed a lucky draw by beating an obscure pair from South Africa in the first round, and set a record for the United States in Olympic badminton tournament with the quarter-final berth. Bach and Malaythong, however, failed to charge real competition to the mighty Chinese pair as their defence was easily penetrated by Fu's powerful shots, and their paces on the court could not follow the speed of the opponents. "Every rally is 50 to 50, but they seized most of the chances," said Malaythong who was apparently dissatisfied with the wide score. "They are obviously one of the hottest teams at the tournament," said Bach, the 2005 world champion pairing with Indonesian badminton legend Tony Gunawan. Cai and Fu showed their strong confidence in themselves from the very beginning. "Even when the score was tied at 9-9 in the second game, we didn't feel shaky," said Cai. The world No.3 will meet Lee Jae Jin and Hwang Ji Man in the semifinal, over whom they had some edge in previous head-to-head encounters. "Attitude and confidence will be the predominant factors in the semi-final, while the tactics will be second to them," said Fu, the fastest shuttler in the world. "Source:Xinhua" .

History of Badminton
Facts and Records History of Badminton In 1873, the Duke of Beaufort held a lawn party at his country house in the village of Badminton, Gloucestershire. A game of Poona was played on that day and became popular among British society’s elite. The new party sport became known as “the Badminton game”. In 1877, the Bath Badminton Club was formed and developed the first official set of rules. The Badminton Association was formed at a meeting in Southsea on 13th September 1893. It was the first National Association in the world and framed the rules for the Association and for the game. The popularity of the sport increased rapidly with 300 clubs being introduced by the 1920’s. Rising to 9,000 shortly after World War Π. The International Badminton Federation (IBF) was formed in 1934 with nine founding members: England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Denmark, Holland, Canada, New Zealand and France and as a consequence the Badminton Association became the Badminton Association of England. From nine founding members, the IBF, now called the Badminton World Federation (BWF), has over 160 member countries. The future of Badminton looks bright. Badminton was officially granted Olympic status in the 1992 Barcelona Games. Indonesia was the dominant force in that first Olympic tournament, winning two golds, a silver and a bronze; the country’s first Olympic medals in its history. More than 1.1 billion people watched the 1992 Olympic Badminton competition on television. Eight years later, and more than a century after introducing Badminton to the world, Britain claimed their first medal in the Olympics when Simon Archer and Jo Goode achieved Mixed Doubles Bronze in Sydney.

Submitted 04 April 2021; Accepted in final form 28 June 2021. ABSTRACT Background. This study aims to analyze the movement of backhand and forehand smash stroke techniques in badminton in three dimensions using a kinematics approach. Objectives. The obtained results were analyzed using a descriptive and quantitative approach. Methods. Furthermore, 24 male badminton players from the university student activity unit with an average age of 19.4 ± 1.6 years, height of 1.73 ± 0.12 m, and weight of 62.8 ± 3.7 kg participated in this study. The study was conducted using 3 Panasonic Handycams, a calibration set, 3D Frame DIAZ IV motion analysis software, and a speed radar gun. Results. The data normalization from the kinematics values of the shoulder, elbow, and wrist joint motion was calculated using the inverse dynamics method. In addition, a one-way ANOVA test was used to identify differences in the kinematics of motion between two different groups. The obtained results showed that the speed of the shuttlecock during the forehand smash was greater than that during the backhand smash. In the maximal shoulder external rotation phase, two variables were identified to have the best results during the forehand smash, i.e., the velocity of shoulder external rotation and wrist palmar flexion.

The Response Forms (questions and puzzles) check your understanding and appreciation of the sport or physical activity. INTRODUCTION Badminton is a popular and physically demanding game with an interesting history. Like most sports, it requires that players be physically fit and alert. The game demands intense playing time on the court—in fact, games can last anywhere from thirty to ninety minutes. Badminton is considered a good sport to help build and main- tain overall fitness. During an average game, players jump, run, turn and twist in many different directions. In fact, a top-level amateur badminton player runs more in a badmin- ton game than a football end does during a one-hour football game. A badminton player also uses his/her arms more than a pitcher does in the average one and one-half hour baseball game! In short, badminton is great aerobic exercise. It’s a fun sport and also is a means to better physical fitness. HISTORY OF THE GAME Badminton is said to have been played centuries ago in China; the earliest written records of the game date back to the twelfth century. However, the game that we know today as badminton was first played in England in 1873 by soldiers returning from military service in India. There the game was called “poona.” In 1903, the first international badminton competition was played in Ireland.
