  • Final Report for the 2018 Pinty's Grand Slam of Curling, Princess
Municipality of Chatham-Kent Finance, Budget and Information Technology Services Information Report To: Mayor and Members of Council From: Mike Turner – Chief Financial Officer, Treasurer Date: December 17, 2018 Subject: Final Report for the 2018 Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling, Princess Auto Elite 10 Event ______________________________________________________________________ This report is for the information of Council. Background In July 2017, representatives from the Chatham Granite Curling Club approached administration with a proposal to bring the Princess Auto Elite 10 - Grand Slam of Curling event, (the event), to the Thames Campus Arena. This international event brings together the 10 top-ranked female and male curling teams in the world. On August 11, 2017, representatives from Sportsnet, reviewed, and approved Thames Campus Arena as an acceptable venue for the event. In September of 2017, Council approved guaranteeing the hosting fee of $160,000, payable from the net proceeds of the event to Rogers Media Inc. This guarantee only comes into play after the net proceeds of the event are confirmed and if they are not sufficient to provide the hosting fee payment. Council also supported that $10,000 be provided to the Curling Committee to market and promote the event within the host community. Council also approved an additional $40,000 be provided toward supporting the event. These funds were directed towards producing a successful international event, with Chatham-Kent benefiting from the national and local marketing campaign that includes commercial spots, in-ice logos, and rink board advertising, all broadcast in over 20 hours of international television coverage on Rogers Sportsnet. Sportsnet’s promotion of the Municipality for the months prior to and during the event was invaluable.

  • 150 Notable Manitoba Curling Teams
150 NOTABLE MANITOBA CURLING TEAMS In honour of Manitoba’s 150 th Anniversary, the Manitoba Curling Hall of Fame and Museum has undertaken to identify 150 teams which played a significant role in creating (in the early years) and extending (in more recent times) Manitoba’s reputation for competitive excellence in the world of curling. Our list acknowledges teams from all competitive sectors from the high-profile junior and men’s and women’s teams to less well-known teams at the mixed, senior, and masters levels and even outside the association realm in the deaf, police and postal championship realms. All of these successful teams played roles in establishing Manitoba’s well-deserved reputation. We also acknowledge recent successes in the new discipline of Mixed Doubles but this historical perspective is focussed on the traditional four-person game. INVITATION TO THE PUBLIC TO ADD TO THE LIST: A total of 150 teams were identified initially. Subsequently two missed teams have been added so the list now includes 152 teams. There are many other teams across Manitoba’s curling history which also belong on a listing of this nature. Manitoba curling fans are invited to suggest other teams for inclusion. In most cases, the teams are included on this list on the basis of the team’s on-ice success in a single outstanding year OR across a series of years. In the latter case, we have acknowledged that so long as three people remained on a team from a previous recorded success – then it was still the same team.

  • Mayor and Members of Council From
Municipality of Chatham-Kent Infrastructure and Engineering Services Parks and Open Spaces To: Mayor and Members of Council From: Jeff Bray Manager, Parks and Open Spaces Date: August 13, 2018 Subject: Municipally Significant Event - Princess Auto Elite 10 Grand Slam of Curling ______________________________________________________________________ Recommendation It is recommended that: 1. The request from the Chatham Granite Club to deem the Princess Auto Elite 10 Grand Slam of Curling a municipally significant event for the purpose of making a Special Occasion Permit application, be approved. Background The Princess Auto Elite 10 Grand Slam of Curling event will take place September 26 to 30, 2018 at the Thames Campus Arena, Chatham, Ontario. To date nearly all 800 full-event passes are sold drawing visitors to the community from primarily across southern Ontario and Michigan. The Chatham Granite Club wishes to license the Thames Campus Arena for the duration of the event. Comments Per the regulations of the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO), a Special Occasion Permit (SOP) is required any time that alcohol is offered for sale or served anywhere other than in a licensed establishment or a private place. In accordance with the AGCO regulations, a Public Event SOP can be issued in specific cases including an event designated by a municipal council as an event of municipal significance. In such cases, a municipal resolution must be included with the Special Occasion Permit application. The letter requesting Municipal Significance status for the Princess Auto Elite 10 Grand Slam of Curling is attached. (Attachment A) Therefore, it is recommended that Council designate the Princess Auto Elite 10 Grand Slam of Curling as “municipally significant”.

Municipality of Chatham-Kent Infrastructure and Engineering Services – Parks and Open Spaces Finance, Budget and Information Technology Services Information Report To: Mayor and Members of Council From: Jeff Bray – Manager, Parks and Open Spaces Mike Turner – Chief Financial Officer, Treasurer Date: August 13, 2018 Subject: Council Update for the 2018 Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling, Princess Auto Elite 10 Event ______________________________________________________________________ This report is for the information of Council. Background In July 2017, representatives from the Chatham Granite Curling Club approached administration with a proposal to bring the Princess Auto Elite 10 - Grand Slam of Curling event, (the event), to the Thames Campus Arena. This event brings together the 10 top- ranked female and male curling teams in the world.
