1 Department of Economics

The Department of Economics made its humble beginning in the pristine green lush campus of St.Paul’s college in 1979 with an undergraduate course in Economics and soon upgraded to the Postgraduate department of Economics in 1982.The Department has become a major department winning the best department award of St. Paul’s College for three consecutive Years from 2016 to 2018 and went on to celebrate ruby jubilee in 2019. The Department has 180 students of BA Economics and 40 students of MA Economics in every year. The Department is well acclaimed for its academic as well as extension activities and achievements. The best practices of the department include agricultural development programmes, Prof.E.Antony Issac Memorial All Kerala Inter collegiate debate competition, field visits, Union budget analysis, Career Orientation programmes, extension and outreach programmes. The department offers a unique certificate course in Professional tour guide funded by UGC and recognized and certified by MG University, Kottayam. The department consistently produces spectacular results and employable students who become achievers and leaders in various walks of life.

Ms.Vineeta Ann George, Ms.Asna T A and Mr. Melbin P M respectively secured fourth, fifth and sixth rank in the MA Degree Examination, MG University Kottayam. Dr.Santhosh T Varghese, Associate Professor, Postgraduate Department of Economics, Maharajas College, Ernakulam was the chief guest of the function. Mangrove Restoration

As part of academic extension activities, Post Graduate Department of Economics, St Paul's College Kalamassery conducted outreach programme ‘Kandal Nadal’ at Bishop Attipetty Memorial CBSE School Vaduthala on 20th February 2021. Students and teachers of the department were participated in the programme. Main aim of this programme was to aware the students about climate change and its adaptation strategies. The active participation of the students from both the institutions made the programme a grand success. Prof.Justine George, Prof.Siby K.M and students of IMA Economics took initiative for the programme.

14.1 COVID 19 AND MACROECONOMIC UNCERTAINTY: FISCAL AND MONETARY RESPONSE

Post Graduate Department of Economics, St. Pauls College, kalamassery organised a webinar on ‘COVID 19 AND MACROECONOMIC UNCERTAINTY: FISCAL AND MONETARY RESPONSE’ on 6th may 2020 at 10.30 . Dr. Lekha S Chakraborty, Professor,NIFP, New Delhi, Mr. Emmanuel Thomas, Asst Professor, St. Thomas College, Thrissur were the resource persons. Sri P Thilothaman, Minister, food & Civil Supples, Kerala, inaugurated the programme. Around 118 participants including teachers, students attended the rpogramme. The programme helped the participants to understand the macroeconomic impact of COVID 19 pandemic and then how policy responses could be constructd effectively to compact the adverse effect of COVID 19 pandemic. Deliberations during the seminar helped the participants to evaluate the effectiveness of monetary and fiscal policies in the COVID period.

The Department of Economics, St. Paul’s College, Kalamassery organized a webinar in association with The Department of Sociology, Bishop Chulaparambil Memorial (BCM) College, Kottayam on 'Caste in Contemporary India' on 27th august 2020 at 11.00am. Dr. Rajesh Komath, Asst. Professor, School of Social Science, Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, Kerala was the resource person. Total of 187 participants attended the programme. He spoke on different dimensions of caste and its consequent impact on different layers of society and economy. The programme helped the participants to understand how caste affected on different layers of economy and society. Programme senstitised the academic community of how and what ways the policies for caste could be framed to get the desired outcome.

The Department of Economics, St. Paul’s College, Kalamassery conducted a social survey research in association with The Department of Sociology, Bishop Chulaparambil Memorial (BCM) College, Kottayam, St Alberts College Ernakulam, St Xaviers College Aluva on ‘Challenges of Online Learning Platforms for Teaching: A Students Perspectives’ on 11th June 2020. Total of 630 students participated in the survey. The aim of the study was to understand the challenges of online teaching platforms with a focus on access to ICT facilities, its effectiveness and efficiencies from student perspectives. Students were the respondents. The study provided different policy insights which would facilitate policy makers to make efficient policy frames online teaching. The evidences of the survey result circulated to different colleges in Kerala with the objective to improve the efficiency of online learning platform. The report also submitted to higher education department to make sufficient changes in the guidelines related to online teaching

14.4 DECODING MIGRANT LABOUR CRISIS AND THE WAY FORWARD

The Department of Economics, St.Pauls College Kalamassery organized a webinar in association with The Department of Economics, St. Alberts College (Autonomous), Ernakulam, on ‘Decoding Migrant Labour Crisis and the Way Forward’ on 25th august 2020 at 11.00 a.m. Mr. Amil Varghese, PhD Scholar, IIT Madras was the resource person. Total of 111 participants attended the programme. The programme sensitized the academic community about the issues connected with internal migration in the early COVID era. Webinar helped to identify the problems associated with internal migration and then analysed the various government policy solutions to reduce the adverse effect of internal migration.

Department of Economics, St Paul's College, Kalamassery organized a international webinar in association with Kerala North Region, Xavier Board of Higher Education on ‘Gender in Economics: Where we are and where next?’ on 16th November 2020 at 3.30 PM. Dr. Neha Hui, Lecturer in Economics, University of Reading, United Kingdom was the resource person. Her talk was centered on the evolution of gender in the academic literature of Economics. Total of 70 participants attended the programme. The programme helped the participants of webinar to understand the importance of gender dimensions of research problems of economics. Programme also helped participants to understand various economic problems with a gender lense.

The Department of Economics, St. Paul’s College, Kalamassery organized a webinar in association with The Department of Sociology, Bishop Chulaparambil Memorial (BCM) College, Kottayam on ‘Introduction to Qualitative Research’ on 26th august 2020 at 11.00 am. K Rajesh, Senior Fellow, Integrated Rural Technology Centre (IRTC), was the resource person. Total of 220 students attended the programme. The programme helped the participants to understand the applications of qualitative research in systematic scientific research. Along with that, participants understood how to use various tools of qualitative research and its applications in social science research.

Yearbook 2020-21 53 14.7 JAIVASAMRIDHI

Jaivasamirdhi was a green initiative of the department of Economics, St. Paul’s College Kalamassery. This programme was organised in association with Department of Botany, Maharajas College Ernakulam. And Centre for Science in Society, CUSAT. As a part of this green initiative programme, around seventy tree saplings were planted in the college Campus. Rev. Fr. Joseph Antony Pallipparambil, Associate Manager of St. Paul’s college inaugurated the programme by planting the first sapling. Prof. Valentine D Cruz, Principal, expressed the vote of thanks. Total of 20 participants attended the programme. The programme created the environmental awareness among different stakeholders of St. Paul’s College, kalamassery. Students got a clear idea about the need for the sustainability of environment for the healthy living of present generation and also the future generations to come.

Department of Economics, St. Paul’s College Kalamassery organized a webinar and book release function in association with Centre for Socio-economic and Environmental Studies (CSES) on ‘Local Politics And Participatory Planning in Kerala’ on 27th October 2020 at 03.30 PM. Dr. T.M. Thomas Isaac, Honorable Minister of Finance and Coir, Kerala State, Prof. (Dr.) P.K. Michael Tharakan, Chairman, Kerala Council For Historical Research, Shri. A.P. Muraleedharan, President, Kerala Sastra Sahitya Parishad (KSSP) spoke on different issues related to the grassroots democracy of Kerala and its consequent effect on development. Total of 50 participants attended the programme. Webinar created an awareness about the importance of local level politics and its consequent impact on development. Deliberations during the webinar identified various possible ways to improve the efficiency of the working of local level democracy for the efficient development outcome.

The Department of Economics, St. Pauls College, Kalamaserry organized a webinar in association with The Department of Economics, St. Peter's College, Kolenchery on ‘The New World Opportunities for Economic Graduates in India’ on 20th august 2020 at 10.00 am. Dr. Prashobhan Palakkeel, Assistant Professor, Department of Management, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Bangaluru was the resource person. He highlighted different career opportunities available for the students of economics, especially the career opportunities that were emerging from the private sector of the economy. A total of 96 participants attended the programme. The programme helped the students of economics to understand the list of career opportunities available to them and also helped them to choose the right career path in relation to the skill set they possessed.

Dr. Pavitra Dharmija, Post-Doctoral Research Fellow, University of Johannesburg was the resource person and spoke on how to conduct a systematic Bibliometic analysis in research. A total of 150 students participated in the programme. The programme helped the participants to understand how to conduct a systematic review of literature, then how to perform systematic bibliometic analysis and created awareness about its uses in social science research.

The Quiz club of St. Paul’s College, Kalamassery and Department of Economics jointly organized an interdepartmental Gandhi Jayanti online Quiz competition on 02/10/2020. Teachers and students from various departments participated the competition. Around 90% of the participants got E-certificate. A total of 120 students participated in the programme. The programme helped the participants to remember the great freedom fighter of India. The programme was an inspiration to the young generation as it helped them to know about the nation and its patriots who struggled for the independence of India. It also enhanced the patriotic feeling among the participants.
