SCANDOLA TRIUMPHS WITH PIRELLI ON RALLY DELL’ADRIATICO Milan, May 20, 2013 – Skoda Italia driver Umberto Scandola has taken a spectacular victory on the Rally dell’Adriatico in central Italy, using Pirelli’s gravel rally tyres. Scandola, whose team switched to Pirelli this year, clinches his first victory of the season on the third round of the championship, boosting him into the lead of the championship ahead of another Pirelli-equipped driver, Alessandro Perico. Once again, Pirelli dominated all the classes. Not only did Scandola lead from the first stage to the last, but it was an all-Pirelli podium, with the Peugeot 207 S2000s of Mauro Trentin and Stefano Albertini in second and third. Pirelli also won the two-wheel drive category, thanks to World Rally Championship up-and-coming star Sebastien Chardonnet, who was eighth overall in a Citroen DS3 R3T and the R2 class with multiple Italian Rally Champion Paolo Andreucci. “It was the perfect rally for us,” said Scandola, who led from start to finish. “Our aim before we came here was firmly to come and win and that is exactly what we did. The control and security we had from the Pirelli tyres was exceptional and it played an important part in our victory.” The drivers used Pirelli’s Scorpion tyres throughout the event with different patterns and compounds. The XR5 tyre was used on the asphalt superspecial, with most teams opting for scrubbed tyres in order to generate the most grip despite a gravel car set-up. In the damp and cool conditions of the morning, the K6 tyres were used. But for the majority of the rally the harder compound K4 tyres were used, ideal for higher temperatures and cleaner roads. Andreucci’s 11th place overall has boosted him up to an incredible third overall in the championship, despite his Peugeot 208 R2 giving away more than 100 horsepower to the top Super 2000 cars. It was Andreucci’s third R2 victory in three events, proving the superiority of the Peugeot-Pirelli package over its direct rivals. Pirelli also won the Trofeo Terra classification with Trentin, while Renato Travaglia headed Group N on Pirelli tyres with fourth place at the wheel of a Prorace Mitsubishi. Chardonnet won the Citroen DS3 Trophy while Andrea Nucita was first among the Twingo Trophy runners. Pirelli’s product manager Terenzio Testoni concluded: “Once again we demonstrated that our gravel tyres were extremely competitive, right from the opening superspecial stage run on asphalt – where we really made a difference. It was a great fight all the way to stage six, when our main rival Giandomenico Basso went off: at the time, he had two Pirelli- equipped cars in front of him. Umberto drove a fast and flawless rally: many congratulations to him and also to the whole Skoda Italia team for their first victory together with us.” The fourth round of the Italian Rally Championship is again on gravel: the Rally Costa Smeralda. This takes place on the weekend of 22-23 June, alongside the World Rally Championship round.
