RESUMEN La riqueza biológica de Mesoamérica es enorme. Dentro de esta gran área geográfi ca se encuentran algunos de los ecosistemas más diversos del planeta (selvas tropicales), así como varios de los principales centros de endemismo en el mundo (bosques nublados). Países como Guatemala, en esta gran área biogeográfi ca, tiene grandes zonas de bosque húmedo tropical y bosque mesófi lo, por esta razón es muy importante para analizar la diversidad en la región. Lamentablemente, la fauna de mariposas de Guatemala es poco conocida y por lo tanto, es necesario llevar a cabo un estudio y análisis de la composición y la diversidad de las mariposas (Lepidoptera: Papilionoidea) en Guatemala. -

VOLUME 29, N"UMBER 4 221 COMMUNAL ROOSTING IN RELATION TO WARNING COLOUR IN TWO HELICONIINE BUTTERFLIES (NYMPHALIDAE) 1 JOHN R. G. TURNER2 Genetics Laboratory, Depaltment of Zoo:..Jgy, University of Oxford, England Communal roosting, reported for few butterfly specics, appears to be of three types: (1) night-roosting, associated with repeated homing to the same roost, reported in acraeines, heliconiines, ithomiines and one nymphaline, and apparently occurring only in tropical species (Dewitz, 1877; Jones, 1930; Poulton, 1931; Carpenter, 1931; Moss, 1933; Beebe, 1950; Crane, 1957; Turner, 1971b; Benson & Emmel, 1973); (2) night time aggregations of temperate grassland butterflies such as blues and satyrids (in Scotland I have noted several dozen Coenonympha pamphi lus (L.) resting on the head of a flowering herb in late afternoon) which may result only from high population density; and (3) long-term aggregations during diapause, well known for the monarch (Danaus plexippus (L.)), and also observed in the tropical nymphaline Smyrna karwinskii (Geyer) (M uyshondt & M uyshondt, 1974), and the temperate arctiid moth Euplagia quadripunctaria Poda (Johnson et aI., 1963). The function of these communes, whether night-roosts or diapause aggrega tions, is little understood, and it is not even clear how many species in what taxonomic groups have these habits, a situation complicated by the fact (K. S. Brown, pel's. comm.) that some heliconiines which roost singly in some times and places, roost communally in others. I shall here discuss night-roosting only. Two authors have proposed models of the ecology and evolution of tropical butterflies which link together, as part of the same complex of adaptations, communal night-roosting, restricted home range (with homing to roost), great adult longevity and high unpalatability (Ben SOIl, 1971; Turner, 1967, 1971a). -
Ecology, Population Biology and Mortality of Euptoieta Hegesia Cramer (Nymphalidae) on Jamaica

We examine the ecology, population biology and potential sources of mortality of Euptoieta hegesia, a tropical lowland butterfly from Jamaica, using a combina tion of captive rearing, studies of natural populations, and experimental approaches. We provide detailed observations of the life cycle and methods for captive rearing of this spe cies. We assess the relative performance of larvae on primary and secondary hostplants, distribution of larvae on the primary hostplant, hostplant population utilization, and the distribution of E. hegesia on the island. A mark-release-recapture study was conducted to estimate population parameters and we recorded sex, size, age (as estimated by wing wear), and wing damage sustained by the butterflies prior to their initial capture. We pro vide evidence that Tumera ulmifdia is the plimary hostplant of K hegesia on Jamaica and that butterfly population size is not limited by the availability of hostplants. These short lived butterflies appear to be residents of discrete hostplant populations and experience high mortality levels. Females are damaged more frequently, show more total damage and more frequent symmetrical hindwing damage (attributablc to ground-based predators) than do males. Wc compare the results of the population study with available studies of other tropical butterflies and suggest that lowland butterfly population structure and dy namics are Significantly different from that of rainforest species. -

Email: [email protected] Abstract Conservation organizations often must rely on data collected quickly and cheaply to make informed decisions in unstudied regions. Butterflies represent an opportunity in this respect, in that many species can typically be sampled and identified in a short time and provide an indication of habitat or conservation value as well. During nine days of sampling in June 2008, we found and identified 84 butterfly species and 1,856 butterfly individuals at Playa El Icacal, Department of La Unión, El Salvador, using transect counts. Through species richness estimators and a ratio extrapolation based on a list of species expected to be found onsite, we sampled 40-60% of the butterfly community present. Species richness at the site is estimated to be between 100 and 200 species. Sites with small patches of dry forest (La Bocana and La Laguna) had higher species richness than sites without dry forest (Hacienda Casco, El Manglar, and El Esteron). While two weeks is not enough time to fully document the butterfly community in 20 km2 of neotropical coastal countryside, we were able to provide a valuable estimate of species richness and provide some information as to which areas in the region hold the most conservation value. -

Males were grouped in six phenotypic classes. These were based on a range between having a conspicuous wide black bar at the dorsal forewing inner margin (wet season dark morphs) and the absence of that bar (dry season light morphs). The body mass and wing area of co-occurring morphs were compared: differents morphs showed similar means. The abundance of butterflies and morph frequencies var- ied in close relation to humidity (rainfall). Individuals were infrequent and monomorphically dark in the wet season while light morphs predominated in dry periods when population peaked. A lower frac- tion of recaptured individuals and higher recruitment were recorded compared to other night-roost- ing butterflies. -

AUSTIN Department of Zoology, University of Florida, Gainesville, FL 32611, and Nevada State Museum and Historical Society, 700 Twin Lakes Drive, Las Vegas, NV 89107, USA ABSTRACT.— The state of Rondonia in west central Brazil apparently has the highest reported butterfly diversity in the world, with an estimated 1,500-1,600 species living within several square kilometers in the central part of that state. A preliminary checklist of over 800 identified species is given, and some of the factors contributing to this diversity are described. The tropical rain forest in this area is being rapidly cleared for development and the creation of one or more inviolate biological preserves is urgently needed in order to save a living sample of the incredibly diverse fauna and flora for study by future generations.
