  • Last Week the History Channel Ran a Two Hour Presentation of a Film by Simcha Jacobovici on the Exodus Entitled the Exodus Decoded
September 3, 2006 The Exodus Last week the History Channel ran a two hour presentation of a film by Simcha Jacobovici on the Exodus entitled The Exodus Decoded. The film began with the question, “Did it happen?” I watched the film and realized that there were several things that were impressive. First of all was the fact that James Cameron, a Hollywood awarding winning director / filmmaker, had produced the program. During the presentation Cameron appeared sev- eral times with his own comments about the work that Jocobovici had done. What was equally impressive was the fact that there was a definite admission that God was behind these events. Not the usual sort of thing you hear from the Hollywood crowd. Jocobovici, like many others, linked the events to natural disasters that are recorded in ancient history but always included God as the force that was behind the events. The end result was the result of over ten years of investigative journalism that did much to reinforce belief in the divine being and the validity of the Bible. There were some errors in the film however and some of the explanations were based on conclusions that Jocobovici had made but it was able to stimulate some thought. One of the errors was in the length of time that passed from Abraham to Moses. This was given as 130 years in the film. We are told that on the day that the Israelites actually left Egypt, they had been in the country for 430 years (Ex 12.41). This is not an approximate time.

Naturalistic Models Attempts to explain the formation of Israel in the ancient world run from the peaceful immigration theory (Alt, Noth, Finkelstein), to the peasant revolt model (Mendenhall, Gottwald, et al.), and then to the two stage conquest theory (Burney, Meek, Rowley, Aharoni, et al.). These theories are so wildly out of accord with the Bible’s narrative of events that they are of little use for those who do not accept the speculative critical theories which are invoked to support them. The whole procedure of tossing out large segments of the biblical text to make it fit with one’s speculative historical assumptions or with one’s unsupported chronological presuppositions is an example of what Karl Popper would have called an “immunizing strategy.” Such a strategy is a way of removing one’s theory from rational or scientific critique, thus placing it into the realm of the purely speculative and pseudo-scientific arena of discourse.1 Really, it is somewhat disconcerting to see the lengths some historians or popular writers will go in order to reconcile biblical history with the conventional chronology of the ancient world.

  • The Time of the Entry to Canaan-Corr2
Timing the IsraelitesIsraelites’’ Entry to Cana’ an (Part VIII) By; Dr. Amrani-Hanchi, M. 16) Historical Consistency checks 1 16.1)appropriatenessofMosesadoption Ramses II, as is known, was the son of “Seti I” and Queen “Tuya”. He was the third king of the 19th Dynasty. He lived to be 90 years old (96 years old!), had as many as 200 wives and concubines, 96 sons and some 60 daughters. Sure! This was no ordinary man! He was named co-ruler with his father Seti I at age 14 and did accompany him, early in his life on numerous campaigns in Libya and Nubia and was even accompanied with two of his own sons, while aged himself only 22. When Seti I died in 1278 1 B.C., Ramses II assumed the throne and began a series of wars against the Hittites. The famous Battle of “Kadesh” is inscribed on the walls of Ramses’ temple. If we assume, within this historical frame, a decade for the sojourn of Moses in Egypt after his return from Midian, then his adoption occurred probably in the year 1263 B.C. or in the 15th year after the enthronement of Ramses II as sole ruler of Egypt. Seti I and Ramses II built a palace in “Avaris” {the old capital of the Hyksos in the time of Jacob }, where Ramses I had started a new capital. From the onset of Ramses II's reign, he felt bound to renew the struggle for domination in southern Syria, which his father initiated before. In order to achieve this goal he began immediately preparing for the coming hostilities.
