  • A Study of Fashion Change Related to Men's Boxer Undershorts As Depicted in Sears Annual Merchandise Catalogs 1946-1988
AN ABSTRACT OF THESIS OF Bernadette A. Tatarka for the degree of Master of Science in Apparel, Interiors, and Merchandising presented on May 22, 1990. Title: A Study of Fashion Changes Related To Men's Boxer Undershorts As Depicted In Sears Annual Merchandise Catalogs (1946-1988) Abstract approved_Redacted for Privacy More research has been conducted regarding women's costume history than that of men's historic costume. One area in which little research has been conducted concerns men's boxer underwear. The need for additional research dealing with basic style changes of men's boxer undershorts was compelling to this researcher, as well as adding to the literature concerning men's historic costume. The purpose of this study was to research the availability of men's boxer undershorts post World War II (1946-1988). Specifically, based on pictorial underwear fashions illustrated in the Sears Annual Merchandise Catalog, this study documented and analyzed the availability of boxer undershorts as to fiber content, fabric structure, color, style features, and special design motifs during the time period studied. The objective of the study was to increase the knowledge of men's historic costume through an investigation into the styles of men's boxer undershorts. The historical continuity of fashion, as well as other theories concerning fashion change served as the theoretical framework for this study. The historical continuity process of fashion proposes that each new fashion is an evolutionary outgrowth and elaboration of the previous fashion (Blumer, 1969). Examples include past research by Young (1937), Kroeber (1919), and Robinson (1976), which indicated that changes in fashions took place in well-defined cycles.

  • Paxar Campaign
Rights of Turkish Garment Workers Brazenly Violated by Transnational Paxar • We are contacting you today to ask for your support of workers in Turkey employed by Paxar Corporation. The factory produces labels, prints logos, designs and texts on garments for garment companies. Clients of the Turkish factory include Marks and Spencer, Next, Adidas, Wal-Mart, Levi Strauss and Co., Puma, Disney, Gap, C&A, OTTO, Esprit, Nike, S.Oliver and Tommy Hilfiger. Paxar, a US based company, has flagrantly violated Turkish law and corporate codes of conduct by: attempting to destroy trade union organizing at the company, firing worker activists, pressuring union members to renounce their membership, discrimination against union members and failing to negotiate in good faith with a trade union that was lawfully authorised to represent workers at the factory. BACKGROUND Striking Paxar Workers face to face with security workers in front of factory.Despite several months of dialogue and investigations involving workers, brands and other stakeholders, Paxar has refused to correct serious, clear-cut violations of workers’ rights in its principle factory in Turkey. The key outstanding violations are: the factory’s refusal to reinstate workers, some of whom have been found by the Turkish High Court to have been fired illegally, and some of whom still have court cases pending, and the factory’s refusal to negotiate in good faith with the trade union TEKSIF, which has been legally authorized under Turkish law to negotiate with the company on behalf of its members. The Turkish factory is owned by the Paxar Corporation, based in New York, a global supplier of apparel labels, tags, and printing systems for some of the world's largest apparel brands and retailers.

Chapter 3 Apparel Distribution: Inter-firm Contracting and Intra-firm Organization by Yoshiro MIWA University of Tokyo and J. Mark RAMSEYER* Harvard University Abstract: Prepared for a forthcoming book on the distribution sector in Japan, this essay introduces the distribution network in the apparel industry. We note the varying patterns of cross-market contracting and intra-firm organization in the industry, and trace the economizing logic involved. More specifically, we show how the decision at the firm level of whether to integrate wholesale, retail and production depends crucially on an informational and incentive-based logic, and how that logic is in turn driven by patterns of consumer demand. Professor of Economics, University of Tokyo (Miwa), and Mitsubishi Professor of Japanese Legal Studies, Harvard University (Ramseyer; on leave, University of Tokyo). We gratefully acknowledge the helpful comments and suggestions of Mark West, and the generous financial assistance of the John M. Olin Program in Law, Economics & Business at the Harvard Law School, the Center for the International Research on the Japanese Economy at the University of Tokyo, and the Sloan Foundation.
