Se presenta el registro de las especies de invertebrados marinos que habitan la costa rocosa intermareal de Montepío, Veracruz, identificados hasta ahora. La información se obtuvo de las colectas realizadas en los últimos 10 años por parte de la Colección Nacional de Crustáceos y los registros adicionales se obtuvieron de la información publicada. El listado de especies incluye las formas de vida en relación con el sustrato, criptofauna o epifauna, así como su tipo de distribución en las 2 principales regiones zoogeográficas marinas para el golfo de México: Carolineana y Caribeña; se incluyen también las especies que sólo se encuentran en el golfo de México. El listado incluye 195 especies pertenecientes a 9 grupos, de los cuales Crustacea es el más diverso con 73 especies, seguido por Mollusca con 69 y Echinodermata con 18; los grupos con menor riqueza específica fueron: Chelicerata con 2 especies y Platyhelminthes y Sipuncula con una sola especie cada grupo. Del total de especies 74 son nuevos registros de localidad y 7 nuevos registros para Veracruz. -

EBERT 2 ABSTRACT: In September 1975, 5031 sea cucumbers (Holothuria atra Jager) were tagged with tetracycline and returned to a gutter on the seaward reef bench of Ananij Island, Enewetak Atoll, Marshall Islands. A sample of 184 individuals was collected in September 1976. Animals were dissected and plates of the calcareous ring were examined with ultraviolet radiation for tetracycline lines. Based on 18 tagged individuals, the Brody-Bertalanffy growth constants are: K = 0.11 and P00 = 0.89 cm (for interradial plates). Length (L, cm) and weight (W, g) of individuals are related to plate size: L = 36.35P and W = 1950P3, giving maximum size as 32 cm and 1352 g. Length frequency distributions for the population did not change from 1975 to 1976. A preliminary estimate of annual loss is 50 to 70 percent of the total population based on the growth parameters and population size structure. Holothuria atra shows asexual reproduction by transverse fission, which appears to be the major source of recruitment at Ananij rather than from the plankton. ON MANY TROPICAL REEFS, sea cucumbers are tion to a technique that shows some promise abundant and may attain densities in excess as a means ofstudying growth ofholothurians of 200/m2 (Bakus 1968). But they are very and so, somewhat indirectly, of estimating difficult to study as populations and very few mortality and population turnover. -

The density and population parameters of the sea cucumber Isostichopus badionotus from Sisal, Yucatan, Mexico were determined during the fishing season. Belt transects of 200 m2 were set in 10 sampling sites at two fishing areas. All organisms within the belt were counted and collected. In the harbor, 7,618 sea cucumbers were measured and weighed: the population parameters were determined using FISAT II. Mean densities of I. badionotus in April 2011, September 2011 and February 2012 were 0.84 ± 0.40, 0.51 ± 0.46, and 0.32 ± 0.17 ind m-2, respectively. Sea cucumber total length varied from 90 to 420 mm, with a uni-modal distribution. The growth parameters were: L∞ = 403 mm, K = 0.25, and to = -0.18, with an allometric growth (W = 2.81L1.781). The total mortality was 0.88, whereas natural mortality was 0.38, fish mortality was 0.50 and the exploitation rate 0.54. Even when sea cucumbers fishery in Sisal is recent and in development with a high density (5570 ind ha-1), it is necessary to establish management strategies to protect the resource, such as an annual catch quota, catching size (>280 mm length), monitoring of population density, and reproduction and larval distribution. -

Sea cucumbers (Holothuroidea) are one of the high value marine products, with populations under very critical condition due to over exploitation. Data and information related to the condition of sea cucumber communities, especially in remote islands, like the Sapeken Islands, Sumenep Regency, East Java, Indonesia, is still very limited. This study aimed to determine the species, community structure (density, frequency, and important value index), species diversity index, and distribution patterns of sea cucumbers found in the reef area of Sapeken Islands, using a quantitative descriptive study. This research was conducted in low tide during the day using the quadratic transect method. Data was collected by making direct observations of the population under investigation. The results showed that sea cucumbers belonged to 11 species, from 2 orders: Aspidochirotida, with the species Holothuria hilla, Holothuria fuscopunctata, Holothuria impatiens, Holothuria leucospilota, Holothuria scabra, Stichopus horrens, Stichopus variegates, Actinopyga lecanora, and Actinopyga mauritiana and order Apodida, with the species Synapta maculata and Euapta godeffroyi. The density ranged from 0.162 to 1.37 ind m-2, and the relative density was between 0.035 and 0.292 ind m-2. The highest density was found for H. hilla and the lowest for S. -

Introduction: In recent decades, studies related to the search and characterization of bioactive molecules in marine organisms have increased exponentially, demon- strating the enormous wealth of secondary metabolites of diverse structural composition that cannot be found in organisms present in the terrestrial environment. A significant number of the new marine natural compounds discovered have contributed to solving some of the problems of humanity, mainly those related to human health. Objective: The purpose of this research is to evaluate the bactericidal and fungicidal activities of the methano- lic extract of sea cucumber Holothuria princeps collect from the bay of Cispatá in the Colombian Caribbean, in addition to chemically identifying its fatty acids. Methods: A methanolic extraction was performed from the collected biological material, by the cold maceration method. The extract obtained was fractionated using chromatographic techniques and the fatty acids were obtained, which were derivatized and identified by means of gas chromatography in coupling with mass spectrometry. -

To gain insight into these pathways in an echinoderm, we performed a comparative transcriptome analysis and functional annotation of the body wall and the radial nerve of the sea cucumber Holothuria scabra; to define genes associated with body wall metabolic functioning and secondary metabolite biosynthesis. -

KRopp2 ABSTRACf: In the laboratory Tonna perdix attacked and often engulfed in dividuals of five holothurian species. Two species, Stichopus chloronotus and S. horrens, sometimes escaped attacks by shedding a piece of body wall and bounding away from the predator. Bounding employed an exaggerated, direct arching peristalsis and was much faster than ordinary crawling. The general response ofeach ofthe other three species, Holothuria atra, H. cinerascens, and H. hilla, was a shortening of the body lengthwise accompanied by a swelling of the body into a spherelike shape. This response was not usually effective as an escape maneuver. Only H. hilla eviscerated during attacks and this was a direct result of penetration of the visceral cavity by the tonnid radula. MANY HOLOTHURIANS, particularly tropical gastropods are also reported to eat sea cucum species, are known to be toxic. This toxicity bers (Bakus 1973, Kay 1979). Crustaceans may is given as the primary reason for the paucity also prey on holothurians. In Guam I saw a of predators on tropical holothurians (Bakus hermit crab, Dardanus megistos, and a xanthid 1968, 1973, 1974, 1981). NUMBER 1821 MARCH 29, 1957 The Littoral Holothurians of the Bahama Islands BY ELISABETH DEICHMANN Very little is known about the echinoderms of the Bahama Islands, and in particular the holothurians have been almost completely forgotten. In Ives's paper (1891) on the echinoderms of the Bahamas not one holo- thurian is included, and in the survey of the littoral echinoderms of the West Indies, H. L. Clark (1919) lists only one. In 1933 Clark notes under the individual species merely whether or not it has been reported from that area, but gives no list. Evidently he overlooked Edwards' ac- count (1909) of the early stages of "Holothuria floridana," based on ma- terial from Green Turtle Key in the Bahamas, and here tentatively referred to H. mexicana, which apparently is the most common species in that region. As the Bahamas form the northern outpost of the West Indies, with rather extreme ecological conditions, and as they probably serve as a stepping stone for the migration of a number of species to the Bermudas, it would be of great interest to know more about their littoral fauna and to compare it with that of other areas-as for example, that of Biscayne Bay on the eastern coast of Florida. The chance to give a preliminary account of the holothurian fauna of the shallow water of the Bahamas came in the summer of 1952 when I received a small collection made by Libbie Hyman during her six weeks' visit to the Lerner Marine Labora- tory on Bimini Island.
