The Internet was originally designed as a flat data network delivering a multitude of protocols and services between equal peers. Currently, after an explosive growth fostered by enormous and heterogeneous economic interests, it has become a constrained network severely enforcing client-server communication where addressing plans, packet routing, security policies and users’ reachability are almost entirely managed and limited by access providers. From the user’s perspective, the Internet is not an open transport system, but rather a telephony-like communication medium for content consumption. This paper describes the design and implementation of a new type of peer-to- peer virtual private network that can allow users to overcome some of these limitations. N2N users can create and manage their own secure and geographically distributed overlay network without the need for central administration, typical of most virtual private network systems. Keywords: Virtual private network, peer-to-peer, network overlay. 1. Motivation and Scope of Work Irony pervades many pages of history, and computing history is no exception. Once personal computing had won the market battle against mainframe-based computing, the commercial evolution of the Internet in the nineties stepped the computing world back to a substantially rigid client-server scheme. The thesis introduces the ChaCha cipher family, explains what the plug-in is capa- ble of, and gives insight into the development process of the plug-in. ChaCha is used in the Transport Layer Security protocol (TLS) since 2014 and so very relevant for applied modern cryptography. Because of the importance of ChaCha its internal design should be made more accessible to the broader public. This is the actual goal of the plug-in. The goal is achieved by focusing on an in-depth but easy to understand visualiza- tion of the encryption process. CrypTool 2 is the most popular e-learning platform in the field of cryptology, used in schools, universities, and companies. Incorporat- ing this plug-in into CrypTool 2 helps to reach a broad audience. iii ZUSAMMENFASSUNG Diese Bachelorarbeit befasst sich mit der Implementierung des ChaCha Plugins für CrypTool 2. From a research perspective, designing privacy preserving techniques for email services is complicated by the re- quirement of balancing security and ease-of-use needs of everyday users. For example, users cannot be expected to manage long-term keys (e.g., PGP key-pair), or under- stand crypto primitives. To enable intuitive email protections for a large number of users, we design Friend- lyMail by leveraging existing pre-authenticated relationships between a sender and receiver on an Online Social Networking (OSN) site, so that users can send secure emails without requiring direct key exchange with the receiver in advance. -

The CrypTool project aims to explain and visualize cryptography and cryptanalysis in an easy and understandable way while still being correct from a scientific point of view. Solitaire Playing Card Ciphers
SOLITAIRE PLAYING CARD CIPHERS To accompany the recent novel Cryptonomicon , Bruce Schneier, author of Applied Cryptography , developed a cipher using the 52 playing cards and two jokers called Solitare , which is described on the Counterpane web site. My Playing Card Cipher I, too, have now succumbed to the temptation to construct an alternative to Solitare . The basic cycle that takes a deck that has already been scrambled to produce a keystream operates as follows: Step 1: From the prepared deck (the order of the cards in it is the key), turn up, and deal out face up in a row, successive cards until the total of the cards (A=1, J=11, Q=12, K=13) is 8 or more. Step 2: If the last card dealt out in Step 1 is a J, Q, or K, take its value, otherwise take the total of the values of the cards dealt out in Step 1. (This gives a number from 8 to 17.) In the next row, deal out that many cards from the top of the deck. Step 3: Deal out the rest of the deck under that row, in successive rows that begin on the left, and end under the lowest card in the top row, the next lowest card in the top row, and so on, in rotation. A red card is lower than a black card of the same denomination, and when there are two cards of the same color and denomination, the first one in the row is considered lower. Training the Motivated: Digital Security for Activists Glencora Borradaile Kelsy Kretschmer Abstract School of Electrical Engineering School of Public Policy The state of global surveillance and the political and Computer Science Sociology Program environment has many activists caring more about their Oregon State University Oregon State University online security culture. Pre- and post-surveys of the seminar will form an initial assessment of what kind of intervention might increase the security practices of activists and to inform the design of program offerings. We report on the pre-surveys from three offerings of the seminar. Introduction In collaboration with the Civil Liberties Defense Center (CLDC), the first author had been offering informal digital security trainings for activists and their lawyers. After the fall elections in the U.S., requests for these trainings increased dramatically and shortly thereafter we launched a Digital Security for Activists (DSA) program. The DSA program’s intent is to align with the CLDC mission (“to defend and uphold civil liberties through education, outreach, litigation, legal support, and assistance”) and enable citizen activists to assert their constitutional rights while organizing online.
