READING FLANNERY O'CONNOR AND THE RESTRICTIVE FEMININITY OF THE 1950S Natalie Curry When reading Flannery O'Connor , one finds it im­ possible to ignore the strong spiritualism that runs through all of her works. O 'Connor was concerned with questions of faith and redemption, and thus these elements comprise the major themes of her stories. Though O'Connor was focused on religion, one can read her works from an alternate per­ spective, one that focuses on gender roles in the 1950s. Among the more pervasive images during that period was the white, middle-cla ss, suburban housewife. O'Connor includes versions of this figure in her texts, but also exposes the dan­ gers of adherence to this patriarchal ideal. The female charac­ ters she includes in her texts reveal dissatisfaction with strict gender nonn s and a willingness to explore alternate versions of femininity. While O'Connor may have been writing non­ realist fiction, her female characters reflect elements of truth concerning the oppressive reality that women in her time faced. Through close analysis of O'Connor's most prominent female characters and the modes of femininity they present along with comparisons to other pictures of 1950s femininity, a complicated picture of O'Connor's own feminism emerges. O'Connor does not openly support female empowerment, but her female characters exemplify a desire to find alternate modes of being outside of gender norms and a discontent with the status quo. While some may apply modern feminist theories to O'Connor 's work, this paper will focus on the feminism of 63 Furman Humanities Review O'Connor's own time and the historical contexts that sur­ round her writing. When speaking of women s issues in the 1950 sand 60s, th looming figure is Betty Friedan and her work The Feminine Mystique. Friedan and O'Connor were contemporaries, with O'Connor's first novel published in 1952 and The Feminine Mystique publ i hed in 1963, but fo­ cusing on th decade earlier. According to critic Robert Do­ nahoo , who explore the intersection of Friedan's and O'Co nnor' work, Friedan and O Connor "foc us their atten­ tion on the same kind of women. " 1 Friedan's work explores false-happiness imposed by house,. ife culture, while O Con­ nor's work includ es description s of female characters that subvert expectations of this contented pa sivity . The choices and fates of these characters align with Friedan's idea that the options offered to women in the 1950s were not satisfac­ tory. It is important to note, however that Friedan and O'Connor were both writing about a particular mode of femi­ ninity that appli d mainly to white, middle to upper-class women of the time, and not a univer sal idea of femininity. The id al of 1950s womanhood as explained by Friedan is the American housewi Fe, who is healthy , beauti ­ ful educated concerned only about her hu band, her chil ­ dren, her home. '2 This figure is also present in O'Connor's works, though the majority of O'C onnor's female characters break from the ideal in one way or another. Fine (New York: W.W. orton & Company , 1991), 11. 64 Natalie Curry However, Friedan describes the problems that arise when "No other road to fulfillment was offered to American women." 3 0 Connor's work addresses this problem as well, as her female characters are trapped by limited circumstances and choices, which sometimes results in violent outbursts. O'Connor was not as overt as Friedan in her criticism of pa­ triarchal gender roles for women, but her writing still cri­ tiques the system that limits opportunities for women, while struggling to find an alternative to these seemingly inescapa­ ble gender nonns. As will be discussed in the following para­ graphs, O'Connor's female characters are punished by the narrative when they adhere too closely to the gender roles of the 19 5 Os, but even those that break the bounds of housewi f­ ery are still trapped in a society that offers limited forms of expression outside the model described by Friedan. 0 Connor's female characters can be distilled into several basic groups, and I will explore two of the most pre­ dominant: mothers and rebellious daughters. The categoriza­ tion of female charac!ers as either mother or rebel shows the real limitations that women in the 1950s faced, as the female characters that attempt to exist outside of the nonns are ulti­ mately forced back into the status quo. However, in O'Con­ nor's writing, no woman can perfectly inhabit gender expec­ tations of the 1950s, revealing O'Connor's critique of the false limitations placed on women. Looking at both tradi­ tional mothers and the more rebellious daughters further ex­ pands O'Connor's critique, as both sets of characters diverge from gender norms. The mothers, the characters that most os­ tensibly comply with gender roles, are traditional to the point of ridicule, but most do not submit fully to the bounds of the domestic sphere as do the housewives described by Friedan. The rebels fight against the system of gender oppression, but are still punished for their actions, portraying seemingly ines- 3 Friedan, 18. 65 Furman Humanities Review capable circumstance . In her characters' inabilities or re­ fusal to adhere to strict gender role O 'C onnor reveals some of her own dissatisfaction with th femininity of her time. The mothers of O Connor stories initially seem to embody ideals of 1950s womanhood , but the punishing con­ clusions to their narratives complicate these portrayals of do­ mestic femininity. Th quintessential mother of tradition fig­ ure is the Grandmother of 'A Good Man Is Hard to Find. ' The Grandmother , who remains nameless, is concerned with appearances and politeness abov all else, putting on her best clothes for the fateful road trip to ensure "anyone seeing her dead on th highway wou ld know at once that she was a lady. "' Her pleading and eventua l death may cause a shift in the murderous Misfit but her character remains stalwart , as she believe in the power of good breeding to the end. After all she knows the Misfit "wouldn t shoot a lady." 5 The hu­ mor of the Grandmother lies in h r twisted realism as she is a familiar character of performative gentility taken a step fur­ ther. She believes that a known murderer "must come from nice p ople,' 6 and that her own politeness and respect might save her from the gri ly fate of her fami ly. Sh exemplifies the do nsides of adher nee to 1950s femininity, a femininity that is concerned with class, gentility, and politeness, which in this ca e, results in death. The mother in A Good Man Is Hard to Find" i al o a namele , tradit ional figure of fi mininity that mirror the listless figures Friedan explores. '7 The mother remains mo tly si­ lent until the end when sh politely re ponds, 'Yes, thank you," when the Misfit asks her if she would like to join her husband in death 8, taking the role of passive wife to the ex­ treme. She is unable to fight the horror that confront her, marching off to death with a baby in her right arm, as her 'left arm dangled helplessly due to the preceding car era h. 9 The mother of this story is defined solely based on her mater­ nal role, and unlike the Grandmother she doesn't have a comic personality , only a responsibility to care for her chil­ dren. There isn t even a full description of the mother s ap­ pearance besides that she looks broad and innocent as a cabbage. 10 This mother figure is a prime example of the women Friedan describes as the ultimate product of the femi­ nine mystique , women who ha e "no independent self to hide even in guilt· she exists only for and through her hus­ band and children.' 11 This type of mother figure, the one with no distinct personality , is perhaps the most pitiable of all the women portrayed in O'Connor's stories .

The event, as O’Connor wryly confessed in an essay in Holiday magazine in September 1961, almost exactly three decades later, “marked me for life.” Yet the purpose of the visit from “the New Yorker,” as she labeled him, wasn’t entirely to film her, outfitted in her best double-breasted dark coat and light- wool knit beret, but rather to record her buff Cochin Bantam, the chicken she reputedly taught to walk backwards. How a Yankee photographer wound up for a memorable half-day at the bottom of the O’Connors’ steep back stairs isn’t entirely clear. One rumor credits the connections of Katie Semmes, a well-to-do dowager cousin who lived in the grander house next door, and whose tall windows looked down on the yard where the filming took place.

None of this was adequately shown and to make the story complete it would have had to be—so I did fail myself. Understatement was not enough. However, there is certainly no reason why the effects of redemption must be plain to us and I think they usually are not. This is where we share Christ’s agony when he was about to die and cried out, ‘My God, why have You forsaken Me?’ I needed some instrument to get this across that I didn’t have. As to the peacock, he was there because peacocks might be found properly on such a place but you can’t have a peacock anywhere without having a map of the universe. The priest sees the peacock as standing for the Transfiguration, for which it is certainly a most beautiful symbol.

    HON 3010.002 Revelations of Grace: The Fiction of Flannery O’Connor Spring 2015, Wednesday 2:00-4:40, Honors C309 – (C-L in EN and GS) I. Course Description This is a single author course on the fiction of Mary Flannery O’Connor (1925-64). We will examine over half of O’Connor’s short stories (about two per week) and her two novellas, Wise Blood and The Violent Bear it Away. Class discussions will involve, at least, O’Connor’s treatment of such topics as private divine revelations of God’s grace, the problem of faith, the social structures of the mid-twentieth century rural American South, Catholicism in the American South, and the effective use of southern dialect in her fiction. I am particularly interested in how O’Connor uses animated nature as a possible vehicle for delivery of grace in stories such as The River, A View of the Woods, Greenleaf, and Revelation. Research Goals Flannery O’Connor’s fiction features abundant depiction of complex family relationships, unresolved family conflicts, and personal life crises. Truncated families and their ineffective functioning often bring about important turns in the plots, and in many cases the dysfunctionalities are related to defective communication between the family members. This dissertation focuses on how unsuccessful communication and conflict resolution affects family relationships in O’Connor’s short stories. In the research I investigate whether the conflicts are caused entirely by the lack of effective communication or whether there are other interpersonal issues that need to be taken into account in analyzing the role of communication in O’Connor’s representations of family dynamics. In the research I focus on three different types of family relationships: mother and daughter, mother and son, male parental figure and child or grandchild. In the dissertation I analyze short stories that are widely presented in the American literary canon and I also work on pieces of writing that are not very well-known even in academic circles.

Eudora Welty' Striking settings - Grand Canyon - and breathtaking views - the glory of a sunrise or the peace of a sunset - in nature as well as in art often create an unforgettable experience. Flannery O'Connor, herself an accom- plished painter and cartoonist, says in her essay 'Writing Short Stories': "a good many fiction writers ... paint, not because they're good at painting, but because it helps their writing. It forces them to look at thing^."^ She was fully aware of the importance of creating in her fiction a general locale and a particular physical location, described in minute details, and she was convinced of the truth the epistemological adage nil in mente nisi prius in sen~ibus.~I see 07Connor's settings as a special area of interest in her art, where precision is of paramount importance for a depth dimension to shine up. In the following I shall try to present a number of typical O'Connor settings as examples of focal points, where immanence and transcendence meet, where the particular becomes translucent. 1. Elizabeth Reed April 20. 1990 The Fiction of Truth: 1 IntergeneraUonal Conflict in the Life and Works of Flannery O'Connor. Aside from the fact that most of Flannery O'Connor's works are set in the South where she lived nearly her entire life, her idiosyncratic characters and the consistently horrifying fates that they meet could not seem further removed from the widely accepted image of the author herself.l This image, instigated by her lovedones and perpetuated by critics, is of a witty, intelligent, and above all else devout Catholic who was stoic in the face of a crippling disease that cut her life short. Despite the limits placed upon her by illness. O'Connor is described as having been socially receptive while living a fairly retired life with her beloved mother, Regina Cline O'Connor, on their dairy farm where she raised scores of peacocks and other fowl as a hobby. The main determinant of O'Connor's literary personality and the most influential force affecting her writing has almost universally been acknowledged to be her staunch CatholiCism. Much criticism of O'Connor's work reinforces this notion to such a degree that one might infer any study not dealing with O'Connor's Christian perspective to be inherently lacking. Robert Drake. for example, writes: What then about those readers who do not- or can not- share Miss O'Connor's "Christian concerns"? How far can they enter into both the substance and the shadow of her work? There does seem a point beyond which such readers, even with the best will in the world, finally cannot go: they cannot honestly share the theological assumptions which are part of her donnee (43).
