  • Visit to Beauchamp Community and Madresfield, September 2016
Visit to Beauchamp Community and Madresfield, September 2016 A coach full of members set off on a beautiful late September day for Worcestershire. On arrival at our destination, we were greeted by the Community Archivist. He was a highly knowledgeable and genial guide who gave us detailed information on the history of the buildings and the characters of those who had played a part in the creation of the community. After a brief walk around the quad, the clock struck eleven, signalling the end of mass. We went into the boardroom where a delicious breakfast was laid ready for us. Suitably refreshed, our tour got underway. The idea for the Beauchamp Community and Church was conceived by Charlotte, Countess Beauchamp, in the 1840s to benefit workers from the Beauchamp estate at Madresfield. Unfortunately, she died before realising her ambition. However, her husband, the 3rd Earl Beauchamp, set aside the value of her dowry for this purpose. It was the second son of the 4th Earl, Frederick Lygon, a leading Tractarian, who finally saw her wishes realised. An adherent of the Oxford Movement, Frederick's vision was that the almshouses and church be a "Gothic Heaven". In this, he certainly succeeded. The interior of the church is glorious, with every surface decorated. Stunning frescoes cover the walls above the dado, and below it are mock tiles of flowing foliage and designs typical of the Gothic Revival Movement. It is a feast for the eyes. The grade 1 listed frescoes were devised by the Revd James Skinner, the first vicar warden of the Community, and executed by Clayton and Bell of London.

  • Lime Kilns in Worcestershire
Lime Kilns in Worcestershire Nils Wilkes Acknowledgements I first began this project in September 2012 having noticed a number of limekilns annotated on the Ordnance Survey County Series First Edition maps whilst carrying out another project for the Historic Environment Record department (HER). That there had been limekilns right across Worcestershire was not something I was aware of, particularly as the county is not regarded to be a limestone region. When I came to look for books or documents relating specifically to limeburning in Worcestershire, there were none, and this intrigued me. So, in short, this document is the result of my endeavours to gather together both documentary and physical evidence of a long forgotten industry in Worcestershire. In the course of this research I have received the help of many kind people. Firstly I wish to thank staff at the Historic Environmental Record department of the Archive and Archaeological Service for their patience and assistance in helping me develop the Limekiln Database, in particular Emma Hancox, Maggi Noke and Olly Russell. I am extremely grateful to Francesca Llewellyn for her information on Stourport and Astley; Simon Wilkinson for notes on Upton-upon-Severn; Gordon Sawyer for his enthusiasm in locating sites in Strensham; David Viner (Canal and Rivers Trust) in accessing records at Ellesmere Port; Bill Lambert (Worcester and Birmingham Canal Trust) for involving me with the Tardebigge Limekilns Project; Pat Hughes for her knowledge of the lime trade in Worcester and Valerie Goodbury

  • The Dunraven Papers D/3196
----'" The Dunraven Papers D/3196 SUMMARY LIST UNIVERSITYafLIMERICK INTRODUCTION (D/3196) The Dunraven Papers comprise c.15, 150 documents and c.225 volumes, 1574 and 1614-1930s, deriving from the Wyndham-Quin family of Adare Manor, Adare, Co. Limerick, Earls of Dunraven. The original patronymic of the Earls of Dunraven was Quin. The Wyndham half of the double barrel derives from the Wyndham family of Dunraven Castle, Glamorganshire, and Clearwell Court, Gloucestershire, whose heiress the future 2nd Earl of Dunraven married in 1810. Thus, the title of Dunraven, though it is an Irish tipe and sounds straight out of Maria Edgeworth, is actually taken from a castle in Wales. This is the more inappropriate in view of the fact that the Quins are one of the few families in the whole peerage ofIreland which is of unbroken Gaelic descent in the male line. Their unbroken descent, however, is not matched by continuity of habitation. They did not come to rest in the one place, Adare, Co. Limerick, until (probably) the first half of the 17th century, although they had been living nearby, and in the same county, since (probably) the late 15th century. Presumably because their earlier history was unsettled and far from untroubled, their papers, disappointingly, go no further back than those of the average 'Ascendancy' family in Ireland - the group to which socially, though not ethnically, they belonged. The earliest document in the Dunraven archive is dated 1574, but it related to Middlesex. There is no concentration of material until the late 17th century; there is virtually no correspondence prior to 1800 ; and although other forms of estate material are fairly abundant, there are actually no rentals of earlier date than 1855.
