60 FLAT HORSES TO FOLLOW 2016 PicksfromthePaddock.co.uk CONTENTS Pages: 1-18: Horses A-Z 19-20: Jockey Statistics 21-22: 60 Flat Horses To Follow 2015 Book Statistics 23: Special Feature 24: Acknowledgements CONTENTS Pages: 1-18: Horses A-Z 19-20: Jockey Statistics 21-22: 60 Flat Horses To Follow 2015 Book Statistics 23: Special Feature 24: Acknowledgements ABDON (3yo) Trainer: Sir Michael Stoute Breeding: Cacique - Kinnaird (Dr Devious) Owner Al Shaqab Racing Looked very green on his first ever run but his turn of foot was very impressive in the closing stages: he has a very impressive pedigree and with entries in the 100,000 and 200,000 Tattersalls in April connections seem to have a lot of confidence in him to produce this season. AJMAN PRINCESS (3yo) Trainer: Roger Varian Breeding: Teofilo - Reem Three (Mark Of Esteem) Nice looking filly who has been working well on the gallops and is likely to start here career around the mile trips. Heavily entered so clearly highly thought of and expect some big things from her for the powerful connections. AMAZING MARIA (5yo) Trainer: David O’Meara Breeding: Mastercraftsman - Messias Da Silva (Tale Of The Cat) This five year old always hinted that she was a smart sort and won two races at Goodwood during the summer of 2013 when trained by Ed Dunlop. She appeared to lose her way sometime after that and connections opted to move her to David O’Meara. It clearly worked the oracle when sent off as an unconsidered outsider, she saw off the attentions of Rizeena and Cladocera to claim the prize. With confidence restored she ran on strongly to take the Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket as well as the Prix Rothschild at Deauville. There will be more to come from her this season when the ground rides good or faster and she can compete with the very best at trips up to a mile and possibly a little further. BEAUTIFUL MORNING (3yo) Trainer: Luca Cumani Breeding: Galileo - Date With Destiny (George Washington) A beautifully bred daughter of Galileo improved significantly from her first start to win a class two maiden at York last August. She was far from disgraced when chasing home Minding in the Dubai Fillies’ Mile and with a Winter behind her she is bound to have matured. She has been entered for numerous engagements already at distances between six and ten furlongs and looks the type that her trainer could do well with. 1 BEDROCK (3yo) Trainer: William Haggas Breeding: Fastnet Rock - Gemstone (Galileo) Won at the third time of asking when last seen at Newbury in October 2015 and with the fifth that day going on to win two in a row afterwards the form is starting to pan out well. One with a lot of promise from a trainer who does well with his younger crop. BESS OF HARDWICK (4yo) Trainer: Luca Cumani Breeding: Dansili - Request (Rainbow Quest) Relatively unfancied on her debut in a 12f Newmarket maiden in May of last year she shaped with plenty of promise and ran into 3rd place, behind a couple of decent sorts. Given a few months time she was sent to Wolverhampton over the same trip and fairly bolted up in the process. Being by Dansili it is extremely likely she will do better with time and given her handler has such a good record with similar types it would be folly to ignore her. Black type is the most obvious plan for this season but she has a very attractive profile and anything from 12f to 14f looks sure to suit. BOATER (2yo) Trainer: Mark Johnston Breeding: Helmet - Cercle D'Armour (Storm Cat) Making her debut on the all weather at Kempton recently, this daughter of Caulfield Guineas winner and first season sire Helmet. Boater was very impressive when blistering from the gates to lead from pillar to post over the minimum trip by seven lengths in a blistering time. She looks a quick filly on what she showed on the day, the penny has definitely dropped early and being a January foal she is more likely to be campaigned early season. CARAMURU (2yo) Trainer: Richard Hannon Breeding: Casamento - Zaynaba (Traditionally) A very strong standing sire Casamento has produced a likeable colt who will be trained by Richard Hannon. Winning Racing Post Trophy sire Casamento is by top European Champion Juvenile Shamardal, and their should be no doubt that his crop of juveniles could all be worth following. A March foal and who would not surprise to see it out early in the season. 2 CASTLE HARBOUR (2yo) Trainer: John Gosden Breeding: Kyllachy - Gypsy Carnival (Trade Fair) A nice looking colt who is bred to tackle shorter trips, up to a mile. With the sire Kyllachy producing quite a few two year old winners this horse has enough to potential pick up a prize in its opening campaign. CHAIN OF DAISIES (4yo) Trainer: Henry Candy Breeding: Rail Link - Puya (Kris) This filly progressed very well last season when winning three in a row over ten furlongs and showed true heart and guts to hold off Crystal Zvezda at Newmarket on her final start of the campaign. If she has continued to develop over winter then she is definitely a filly going places. CHARTREUSE (3yo) Trainer: Freddie Head Breeding: Lawman - Bufera (King’s Best) Caught the eye when winning a Chantilly maiden by five lengths, followed up with a respectable third in a Group 3 race at Deauville just three weeks later and looks to be an exciting prospect from the other side of The Channel. CHELSEA LAD (3yo) Trainer: Martyn Meade Breeding: Clodovil - Yali (Orpen) Just the one run and one win as a youngster in what looks to have been a decent maiden at Newmarket last October. Hails from the less established but well accomplished yard of Martyn Meade and at 33/1 it sprung a shock when it won but with an entry in The 2,000 Guineas is clearly highly thought of. CHUPALLA (2yo) Trainer: Mark Johnston Breeding: Helmet - Dubai Sunrise (Seeking The Gold) Once more Mark Johnston has hit the ground as he does most seasons and Chupalla looked a massive filly going into the gates when winning in March. I would not be surprised if she is campaigned carefully this season being an April Foal. She is out of the un-raced Dubai Sunrise through the dams-sire Seeking The Gold who finished runner up in the Group 1 Breeders Cup Classic on his sole career start. Chupalla is going to be one to follow throughout the season, with a campaign that probably won’t peak until around the Royal Ascot meeting. A horse that would probably go on to make a positive transition at the age of three as well. 3 CLONDAW WARRIOR (9yo) Trainer: Willie Mullins Breeding: Overbury - Thespian (Tiraaz) A useful dual purpose performer who recently won over hurdles at Fairyhouse when partnered by Ruby Walsh. He is likely to have another profitable campaign on the flat having secured decent wins in handicaps at Royal Ascot and Galway last year. He was also a brave runner up to a reformed Pallasator in a Group Two over two and a quarter miles at Donaster last September. An ideal sort to repeat his success over extreme distances on the flat throughout the summer having been sparingly campaigned over jumps last season by his master trainer. CONTROL CENTRE (2yo) Trainer: Richard Hannon Breeding: Dragon Pulse - Margaux Magique (Xaar) Control Centre is sired by juvenile Group 2 Futurity Stakes winner Dragon Pulse who went on to land the Prix de Fontainebleu as a three year old and was second in the Group 1 National Stakes. It already has some interesting declarations which include the Weatherby's Super Sprint and the valuable yearling's Stakes at York later in the year, he could be one of the juveniles that will probably have two runs before heading to Newbury. Depending on what he achieves up to then, he looks destined to be encountering distances around 7f up to a mile later in the year. CURRICULUM (3yo) Trainer: William Haggas Breeding: New Approach - Superstar Leo (College Chapel) The horse only ran once as a two year old when finishing fourth in a maiden at the end of the 2015 season but showed enough in that to suggest it may have some talent. The horse plugged on from a less advantageous draw and stayed on very well. It will probably improve once stepped up over a mile and is definitely worth noting from a powerful stable. ELTEZAM (3yo) Trainer: Richard Hannon Breeding: Kodiac - Tymora (Giant’s Causeway) A winner of only one of his four starts for Richard Hannon last season but he did not stop improving throughout the whole of the year and rounded it off with a fine fourth to Shalaa in the July Stakes at Newmarket. That came on the back of an excellent effort at Royal Ascot were he was placed in the Coventry Stakes behind smart Classic contenders Buratino and Air Force Blue. Entered in both the English and Irish 2000 Guineas and runs in the Al Shaqab colours so should have Dettori onboard for the season. More black type looks certain to come and should fulfil last years promise. 4 EMOTIONLESS (3yo) Trainer: Charlie Appleby Breeding: Shamardal - Unbridled Elaine (Unbridled’s Song) Won by over three lengths on his maiden run which looks very strong now as many of the horses he had behind that day have gone on to win.
