Nomura URBAN NATURALIST Developing Biodiverse Green Roofs for Japan: Arthropod and Colonizer Plant Diversity on Harappa and Biotope Roofs Ayako Nagase1,*, Yoriyuki Yamada2, Tadataka Aoki2, and Masashi Nomura3 Abstract - Urban biodiversity is an important ecological goal that drives green-roof in- stallation. We studied 2 kinds of green roofs designed to optimize biodiversity benefits: the Harappa (extensive) roof and the Biotope (intensive) roof. The Harappa roof mimics vacant-lot vegetation. It is relatively inexpensive, is made from recycled materials, and features community participation in the processes of design, construction, and mainte- nance. The Biotope roof includes mainly native and host plant species for arthropods, as well as water features and stones to create a wide range of habitats. This study is the first to showcase the Harappa roof and to compare biodiversity on Harappa and Biotope roofs. Arthropod species richness was significantly greater on the Biotope roof. The Harappa roof had dynamic seasonal changes in vegetation and mainly provided habitats for grassland fauna. In contrast, the Biotope roof provided stable habitats for various arthropods. Herein, we outline a set of testable hypotheses for future comparison of these different types of green roofs aimed at supporting urban biodiversity. Introduction Rapid urban growth and associated anthropogenic environmental change have been identified as major threats to biodiversity at a global scale (Grimm et al. 2008, Güneralp and Seto 2013). Green roofs can partially compensate for the loss of green areas by replacing impervious rooftop surfaces and thus, contribute to urban biodiversity (Brenneisen 2006). -

Plangia graminea (Serville) (Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae) is considered a minor sporadic pest in vineyards of the Western Cape Province, South Africa, and was the focus of this study. In the past few seasons (since 2012) P. graminea appeared to have caused a substantial amount of damage leading to great concern among the wine farmers of the Western Cape Province. Very little was known about the biology and ecology of this species, and no monitoring method was available for this pest. The overall aim of the present study was, therefore, to investigate the biology and ecology of P. graminea in vineyards of the Western Cape to contribute knowledge towards the formulation of a sustainable integrated pest management program, as well as to establish an appropriate monitoring system. -

The sensilla of the male postabdomen of the Mediterranean Katydid Phaneroptera nana were investigated by scanning electron microscope in order to study their involvement in copulatory behaviour. The externally visible parts at the abdominal extremity are the dorsal epiproct and the ventral subgenital plate which together form a kind of pincer, and the highly developed cerci which are curved like a hook. The more internal parts are the paraprocts and the genitalia. The epiproct bears three types of aporous sensilla chaetica and sensilla campaniformia on its external surface, and only aporous sensilla filiformia on its internal surface. The subgenital plate is equipped with aporous sensilla chaetica and aporous sensilla filiformia present on its external surface whereas its internal surface is without sensilla. The cercal sensilla are composed of aporous sensilla filiformia of two subtypes, aporous sensilla chaetica and sensilla campaniformia. The surface of the paraprocts is endowed with aporous sensilla filiformia, two subtypes of aporous sensilla chaetica and sensilla campaniformia. The genitalia comprise uniporous sensilla basiconica with the abruptly narrowed tip. They are joined together by a median small tongue provided with uniporous sensilla basiconica, and are edged with a pad bearing sensilla campaniformia. -

Abstract The present study documents the distribution; occurrence and faunal richness of Tettigoniids in Tamil Nadu, from four different vegetation types viz forest ecosystem, open grassland ecosystem, wasteland ecosystem, and agroecosystems. A total of twenty-six species in five different subfamilies, were recorded. Three faunal properties, viz., species richness, complementarity and taxonomic difference were calculated as a measure of diversity. Root weighting is a fixed weight index where species are valued for differences according to their position in the taxonomic hierarchy. Following this, the tettigoniid species were weighed as per their rarity in Tamil Nadu and their taxonomic distinctness, which provided the necessary pointer for habitats prioritized for conservation. This method gave a higher priority to lowland forest habitats for conserving tettigoniids, followed by the upland forests, grasslands, arablelands and finally the wastelands. INTRODUCTION The burgeoning human population demands has resulted in tremendous loss of biodiversity globally and scientists are pondering on ways to protect if not prevent species extinction. Site selection for conservation of ecologically functional species is gaining momentum and it has been accepted that while the more visible species are protected at a site, many umbrella species automatically get covered. However there are many other species which does great ecological functions, but do not fall under the umbrella species category. -

Tettigoniidae, survival strategies, endangered species, large insect predators, ecological limits Abstract. The bush-cricket Saga pedo, one of the largest predatory insects, has a scattered distribution across 20 countries in Europe. At the northern boundary of its distribution, this species is most commonly found in Slovakia and Hungary. In Slovakia in 2003–2006, 36 known and potentially favourable localities were visited and at seven this species was recorded for the first time. This species has been found in Slovakia in xerothermic forest steppes and limestone grikes (98% of localities) and on slopes (10–45°) with south-westerly or westerly aspects (90%) at altitudes of 220–585 m a.s.l. (mean 433 m, n = 20 localities). Most individuals (66%) were found in grass-herb layers 10–30 cm high and almost 87% within 10 m of a forest edge (oak, beech and hornbeam being prevalent). The maximum density was 12 nymphs (3rd–5th instar) / 1000 m2 (July 4, 510 m a.s.l.). In a comparison of five present and previous S. pedo localities, 43 species of Orthoptera were found in the present and 37 in previous localities. Doscriptions of tho species .. 280 Rcforonccs . 283 INTRODUCTION This revision covers all the species included in the genus Phaneroptera Serville, 1831 by Kirby (1906) except Ph. annu.lata Brunner, 1891, which is now put in Xenoderus Carl, 1914, and the two species Ph. adusta Haan, 1842 and Ph. horde�folia Haan, 1842, which are generically quite distinct. The species of the genus Euanerota Karny, 1927 are here regarded as congeneric with Phanero ptera Serville, and all species which have been described in that genus are also included here. The genus Eulioptera is new, and Nephoptera Uvarov, 1929 is conveniently included as a very close relative. The species which Bei-Bienko ( 1954) included in the genus Pseudanerota Bei-Bienko, 1951 are regarded in this work as congeneric with Nephoptera Uvarov, and are also covered by this rev1s1on. -

Red-footed falcon (Falco vespertinus) preys predominantly on larger insect species with a supplementary portion of smaller vertebrates. In the breeding periods 2014 and 2016 their food supply, focusing on Orthoptera, Mantodea, Rodentia and Eulipotyphla, was analysed at five historical nesting sites of the species in Slovakia. Preference for these prey groups in the diet was also studied at the last active nesting site in this country. Overall we recorded 45 Orthoptera species (of which 23 species are known as the food of the red-footed falcon), one species of Mantodea, 10 species of Rodentia (of which 2 species are known as the food of the red-footed falcon) and 5 species of the Eulipotyphla order in the food supply. With regard to the availability of the falcons' preferred food, in both years the most suitable was the Tvrdošovce site, which continuously showed the greatest range and abundance of particular species. In the interannual comparison the insects showed lower variability in abundance than the small mammals. In 2014 the growth of the common vole (Microtus arvalis) population culminated and with the exception of a single site (Bodza) a slump in abundance was recorded in 2016. -
