3 President Message from the President Mike November 2016 Stevens

November 2016 Greetings Sunburst Members,

November usually heralds the beginning of the holiday season and time to get our Corvettes ready for hibernation. A few “Indian Summer” days are still ahead, so don’t pack your baby away yet. Let’s hope this mild fall continues just a little longer.

Sunburst still has a couple events left in 2016 and I hope that you’ll be joining your Sunburst buddies for the fun and frivolity. Jean Mumford, Kathy Samuel, Shawn Smosna and Pat Granzberg have been working hard to put together the Sunburst Halloween Party and Sunburst Holiday Party. The Halloween Party is on October 29th and will be held at the Little Angels Nursing Home. The Holiday Party is on December 3rd and will be held at the Golf Club of Illinois. See the flyers in this newsletter for more information.

During the past month our Nominating Committee (Karen Baird and Mehlinae Douglas) have been very busy contacting potential candidates for Sunburst’s 2017 Board. As of this writing, they are still searching for candidates for the position of Vice-President and Treasurer. At our November membership meeting they will accept nominations from the floor so that the ballot can be finalized. I hope that you will consider serving the membership of Sunburst by adding your name to the ballot. Voting will take place at the December 1st membership meeting.

At the October Board meeting, the Board reviewed our current financial status (which is really, really good) and decided to “earmark” or encumber $1000 for use on our 40th anniversary celebrations. The Board also voted to approve a Club membership at the National Corvette Museum, and that will have a positive impact for the Sunburst members participating in the Rolling to Bowling Green trip next June. These expenditures still leave a healthy balance to be shared with our 5 charities.

Membership renewals are due by the November 3rd membership meeting. If you plan on renewing your Sunburst membership (and why wouldn’t you) please bring it to the meeting. If you can’t make the meeting, please send your renewal to Bill Mumford.

Speaking of the November membership meeting…. Pat and I will not be there. The meeting will be in the capable hands of Vice-President, Mike Smosna. Pat and I will be touring all of the countries I tried to stay out of in 1968.

November is also Thanksgiving time. We all have soooo much for which to be thankful – good friends, family, the great country we live in, and, of course, the ability to own and drive the great American . I hope you and your family have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Save the Wave,

Mike Stevens

7 Governor Notes from the Gov Lee Douglas November 2016

Fall is Here Our C6 is in Arkansas for winter hibernation. Our C5 is in its usual spot on the lift for winter updates and repairs. I think our road trips are about done, but what a year we have had. We traveled north for Corvette Adventures and the Fall Color Run. We traveled south for Autocrossing and Saint Jude and of course west on the Highway to Heaven and The Corvette Convention. Next year Vettes viewing Vermont is already in planning mode. We will be traveling south to Bowling Green and beyond for our 40th Anniversary Celebration. We now will spend our time closer to home with a Halloween party and of course our Christmas party. We also have to take care of club business At our November meeting we will nominate potential new board members. If you want to nominate anyone or volunteer please speak up. At our December meeting we will elect next year’s Board. We are still unsure of our sanction dates for next year but that should be clear after November governor’s meeting. Remember this club runs on members volunteering to help.

Fall Color Run October 7th to 9th

On the Columbus Day weekend 14 cars from Sunburst joined in the 36th annual Fall Color Run sponsored by the Suburban Corvettes of Minnesota. We started our adventure, on Friday, at Brunch Café in McHenry. The morning drive, through the rolling hill of Wisconsin, ended with a lunch stop at the Brewery Creek Brew Pub in Mineral Point. After lunch we headed toward Prairie du Chien to follow the Great River Road into La Crosse.

After checking in to the Holiday Inn Express in Onalaska, we headed to the Fall Color Run headquarters to check in, collect our information packets and fill up at the taco buffet.

Fall Color Run October 7th to 9th

We woke up to very cool and foggy morning on Saturday and proceeded to meet up with over 230 other Corvettes at Rowe Park. Once the fog burned off we were treated to a beautiful fall day. The morning route was 83 miles through fantastic, twisty, back roads and the afternoon route covered 69 glorious miles.

On Saturday evening we all dined at Manny’s Cucina in Onalsaka. After filling up on fajitas, carnitas and enchiladas we headed back to the hotel to watch the Cubs and Cards. Sunday morning proved to another beautiful morning and we all headed to the Fall Color Run Sunday Brunch at the Cedar Creek Country Club.

After the sumptuous brunch most Sunburst members jumped on the Interstate to get home to watch the Bears. Four cars took the more scenic route and stopped at the Wollersheim Winery in Sauk City before heading home. NO TICKETS, NO BREAKDOWNS, ONLY GOOD TIMES!

One of Vermont’s high seasons for travel is for fall foliage. It is only for 3 weeks and this trip leaves right in the middle. Hotels managers have to me that they turn away 20 plus people per night.

So it is CRITICAL that we book by the end of October, 2016 when I release the hotel list. All are Hampton Inns and they are generally limited to one year out for reservations. I have spoken to respective group sales managers and will sign contracts after October 7, 2016. at the October Sunburst meeting I will start a sign up sheet for the trip.

The trip is about having a good time with Sunburst members and enjoying a kaleidoscope of colors against the backdrop of the Green Mountains. What I looked for is: Scenic highways, top tourist attractions, double stay hotel locations, low mileage in Vermont, something special.

If, at all , interested….send me your email address to: [email protected]. I will provide a fact sheet with web site references.

Keep cruising Vern and Judy Chapman

16 40th Anniversary Update

To Commemorate Sunburst’s 40th Anniversary A Sunburst Brick at the National Corvette Museum

The 40th Anniversary Committee proposes to purchase a brick at the National Corvette Museum to commemorate Sunburst’s 40th Anniversary.

A sealed “Brick Box” has been placed on the registration table at each membership meeting and at other club events. The Committee hopes that at least $600 will be donated which will enable the Club order a 12” x 12” brick with our 40th anniversary logo and a few lines of copy. The brick will be placed outdoors on the sidewalks leading to the Museum entrance. Also, individual members will have an opportunity to purchase a 4” x 8” brick personal brick to be placed around the Club’s brick for $100 NCM member and $125 Non-member.

The brick Box will be opened at the Membership on November 3. It is our hope that members will have been generous enough over the last several months that the brick will be fully founded. If not, we ask that open up your hearts and wallets and help us get to the goal.

During the recent visit by Sunburst Members to St Jude Children’s Hospital, it was proposed that a Sunburst link to the St Jude website be established, whereby members of the club could easily donate to St Judes in the name of Sunburst Corvette Club. Plans are to continue to work with the McHenry Harley Davidson dealership next summer to raise additional funds which will go directly St Judes through this site. This proposal was brought to the board and approved at the October Board Meeting. Now available, the goal of $5000 has been established.

For questions please contact Lee Douglas or Karen Baird.

Please visit the site at the following address for more information on how funds that are donated are put to good use:

24 Corvette History and Interesting Facts

The Third Generation “Mako Shark” Corvettes 1973 Although 1973 VINs run to 34464, only 30,464 units were built; the 4,000 serial numbers between 24001 and 28000 were never used. The rear view mirror in the 1974 Corvette was increased to a width of 10 inches. 1974 The last true dual exhaust was installed in 1974. After that, all exhaust gases were channeled through a single catalytic converter. The convertible was discontinued after the 1975 model year and would not reappear again until 1986. GM cited declining sales for 1975 (only 4629 units in ‘75) and safety concerns as reasons for killing the ragtops. 1976 Corvette used the same steering wheel as a Vega for the “Sport Steering Wheel” Option. 1976 Due to stricter emissions standards, California Corvette buyers could not opt for the L82 engine in 1976. The 500,000th Corvette, a white 1977 coupe, rolled off the St. Louis assembly line at 2:01PM on March 15, 1977. 1977 1977 was the last year for the notch back roof line. The 1978 model saw the first fastback rear window since 1967. The ‘78 Pace Car’s distinguishing “Black and Silver” paint 1978 was chosen over other alternative color schemes primarily because it photographed well. Crossed flag emblems returned to the nose and sides of the 1979 Corvette in 1979. More Corvettes were built in 1979 than in any other year, before or since….a total of 53,807 units were produced.

1980 By Federal mandate, the 1980 Corvette was the first Corvette to have a speedometer with an upper limit of 85 MPH. There were no optional Corvette engines in 1981. In 1982 fuel injection reappeared in the Corvette after a 17-year hiatus. 1981 For the first time since 1954, in 1982 you could not order a Corvette with a manual transmission.

26 2 Minute Tech Tips by Jim Downing

November 2016

It’s Fall, the days and nights are getting colder. In addition to any slow leakage, your tire pressures will drop by about 1 psi for every 10’ temperature change. So if you had set your pressures when the temperature was 70’ and it drops down to 20’ (yes, it gets that cold here!), you’ll lose 5 psi pressure. Inflating with nitrogen instead of ordinary air (which is already 80% nitrogen) won’t make a lot of difference. Also remember that all tires lose some of their “grip” in colder temperatures even if you keep them properly inflated, and high performance summer tires lose more than the all season tires on your tin car. Many tire companies recommend not driving on summer tires below 40’; I’ve done that many times but you have to drive your Corvette like there’s an egg under the gas pedal. Don’t let your tail lights get out in front!
