Thursday 10th April 2014 5 Student World LITTLE LION WITHOUT HAIR

One night the king lion and queen lion had a beautiful baby and they called him Little paw. The day he was born his uncle Stormy went to the savannah and put some powder on the baby’s head. Then he left and went to his cave with his helpers and told them about it and they all laughed.

Four years later when he was playing with his friends Lily and Coloury the parrot he noticed that he was the only lion without hair. When he went home he asked his parents about it and his father told him what had happened the night he was born.

Like every night, Little Paw went to listen to the story that Madame Celine told him. It started like this: A long, long time ago some humans came in a boat. They had got money, gold, and a magic mirror. This mirror was able to grant three wishes. The humans used two of them but no one knows about the third one… Little paw asked Madame Celine where was that boat and she told him that it was in the North part of the savannah.

The next day, little paw told his friends about the story. When the school finished, Lily asked Little paw whether they should go to the North of the savannah to find that mirror and so they did.

The went running towards the north. When the night came they could already see the boat. The next day, they went in the boat and saw the mirror. Little Paw looked at it and said: “I wish I had hair like all lions”. Little Paw began to fly and some hair appeared in his face.

The next day, they all went back home and lived happily ever after. THE END

Egyptian TIGERS AND CHILDREN

Once upon a time, there was a tiger family that lived in the jungle.

One day, some children went to the family to play, one of the girls was called Katy.

After playing, Katy saw a parrot and, as parrots are her favorite animals, she started to follow it. Suddenly she disappeared from the group and her friends couldn’t find her.

Time passed and Katy realized she was lost. He looked for her friends but, instead, she found a tiger! She was a tiny bit scared but the tiger looked at her happily.

Katy walked towards the tiger. The tiger said: “Come with me, I won’t hurt you. I’ll find a way to your house”

Then Katy said: “Are you sure you won’t hurt me”

And the tiger replied: “I promise”

The tiger called his family and asked if they could help to find Katy’s house and they said they would help so they all started looking for it.

Tiger mum found a monkey and she said it would help because monkeys are really intelligent. They told the monkey that they were looking for Katy’s house and Katy explained where her house was. Soon, the monkey had made a map for them.

The adventure started!

They went across rivers with crocodiles and lots of other horrible things. The adventure took the whole night but finally they arrived Katy’s house.

Katy was really happy. She never forgot her great adventure with all the special jungle animals. THE END

GINN AROUND THE WORLD

Ginn was a free guinea pig that lived in a small hole in a tree. Even if he had everything he wanted, he always knew that where he really belonged was all around the world

Ginn had plans, big plans. First, he decided to go to Japan, then Mexico… but then, he thought about his family: Would they be safe? What would they do without him? They were the ones that made his life better by showing him how to cook, how to read, or by making the hole in the tree so they could have a shelter. All this thoughts went through his head. Ginn was lost.

Ginn decided to tell everything to his family, including his grandpa, about where he wanted to go and about what he was thinking. Then, when he finished, his grandpa said: “Well, I can take you all around the world if you want to”

Ginn asked if he could really take him around the world and his grandpa said he could so they both sat beside the fire and started.

His grandfather had already gone around the world once. Ginn was told about when his grandparent was in Pompey, Italy, France… For each place he visited, he told Finn a story. Ginn started feeling that he was in those places. When his grandpa finished, Ginn was the happiest guinea pig ever.

Now, you all know that with your mouth and a little imagination, you can go around the world in no time. THE END

THE TWO HEDHEHOGS Viking

Once upon a time there were two hedgehogs one was pink one was blue. The pink one was called Hanna. The blue one was called Eric. Eric lived in France and Hanna lived in Turkey and they didn't know each other. But they had the same problem. They had had enough of hedgehogs bullying them. So they decided to do a trip somewhere where they hadn't been before. Hungary! They both shouted simultaneously even though they were in different countries. Hanna was thinking what to pack. So if it rains I will pack my coat and hat. Hanna was ready to go. Meanwhile in France Eric was just zipping up his bag. They were ready to go. They had decided to go at night so they wouldn't get caught escaping. It was time to leave.

Hanna took a train, Eric took a bus. When they arrived they looked at each other and instantly fell in love. One year later they had children Mary, Jack and Joe [Which were all purple]. And they lived happily ever after. THE END

Unfortunately, we did not have enough material to make the secondary houses section in this issue so we are only going to have the Primary houses one.

Apart from the writing and drawing competitions (mentioned in the magazine), there were lots of other competitions, such as joke, school song, fashion design or spelling competitions.

There were also some others that were very creative, like the “Life in a box” or “Paper airplane” ones.

We decided not to have the house points in this issue because as they are always changing, they would not be accurate. Anyway, the house points are on display in the small hall and can be easily checked by anyone.

Thursday 10th April 2014 10 Student World Again, we had some wonderful photos of the different competitions.

Shown below is a photo of the drawing competition and photos of the winners of the spelling bee, fashion design, writing and drawing competitions.

In the photos, you can see everybody put a lot of effort in their work, but most importantly, they had lots of fun.

Please note we have not got photos from every competition and, additionally, some children were missing the day the photos were taken so they don’t appear in them.

NBA All-Star Weekend

By Pablo Pascual

NBA RISING STARS CHALLENGE:

This event took place on Friday, 14th February. It consisted of a match between the best 18 first year (rookies) and second year (sophomores) NBA players, who were split up into two teams: Team Hill and Team Webber. The match was very entertaining and equal, but at the end, Hill’s team earned the victory (136-142). Andre Drummond, who scored 30 points and an NBA Rising Stars Challenge record of 25 rebounds for Team Hill, was named the MVP of the event.

ALL-STAR SATURDAY NIGHT

On Saturday, 15th February, there were a series of contests between players from East and West NBA teams, including the Skills Challenge, the Three-Point Shootout and the Slam Dunk Contest.

In the Skills Challenge, the West won thanks to Damian Lillard and Trey Burke, who managed to complete the skills circuit just 0.1 seconds faster than the East candidates.

The West also managed to win the Three-Point Shootout, with the Italian Marco Belinelli scoring 24 points in the championship round against Bradley Beal.

Finally, the East won the Dunk Contest easily against the West, with John Wall making an incredible dunk and being named champion. (Photos below)

NBA ALL-STAR GAME

This was the best event in the New Orleans All-Star Weekend. From the opening tip, both teams were looking to entertain, and it didn't take long for the first quarter to turn into an unofficial slam-dunk competition. Until the start of the 4th quarter, the West team was winning easily, being up to 18 points ahead thanks to Blake Griffin (38 points and 19-of-23 shooting from the field) and Kevin Durant (38 points). However, the East team, led by Carmelo Anthony (30 points) and Kyrie Irving (31 points and 14 assists), battled back and managed to win by a score of 163-155, the highest combined score in an NBA All-Star Game ever. At the end of the game, Irving was named the NBA All-Star Game Most Valuable Player (MVP).

Sylvester galloped on, desperate to reach the inn in time. Though his legs ached and his back hurt he was glad for it, as it gave him time to reflect upon the horde of things that he had needed to think about, but been too busy to. Foremost in his mind was the multitude of things that could go wrong with Orion’s plan. Orion had said “We will deal with any of the problems which there are certain to be, as they arise.” Ha, thought Sylvester, he’ll be relying on me when things go wrong. The problem was that there were so many things that could go wrong.

First the biggest worry of all was that both he and Jenny would miss Orion and his message.

Second was the message itself, even if Jenny managed to make it to the inn early enough to get the message, Orion was not the sort of person who would put a message of any importance where anyone could see it and not shroud it in some sort of secrecy. He might distort the air around the rocket in such a way that only Sylvester could see it or he might put it in code or he might even have put an enchantment on it so that you could only read it if you were expecting it.

Third was the way Orion simply had not told him anything, all Sylvester knew was that Orion wanted to have some bait to attract the werewolf and something else to subdue it. He did not know how Orion was planning on controlling the beast or how he was going to get a “Rich young lady” to do what he wanted. He didn’t even know how the hell he was going to find one. In fact now that Sylvester thought about it there were a whole host of important details that he didn’t know.

That worried him and although he knew that Orion was the sort of person who only told people what he needed them to know, it was still infuriating not having any control over their... Their what? Trip sounded too belittling considering they were trying to find a werewolf. A werewolf moreover that had already killed repeatedly, and seemed like it had no moral or physical problems with it.

He toyed with the idea of using adventure for a while but then decided against it as it sounded a bit too bold and brash.

After poking several alternatives he finally settled on hunt as really and truly they were looking for the werewolf in order subdue it and then bring it to justice. Be it at court or, if they could not subdue it, by death, and then taking the corpse to the police bounty office where they would be paid for the death of one of the terrors that feral werewolves were. Werewolves weren’t particularly dangerous unless they turned feral which can be caused by many things but which always resulted in them becoming impulsive murderers when in wolf form.

Picasso whinnied loudly, breaking Sylvester’s train of thought. He looked around trying to spot the disturbance. It was Jennifer’s horse. Yet Jennifer was nowhere to be seen.

Gothic Story By Helena Santos Alemán

It was raining when I arrived. I always remember that, because it was also raining on my last day in Reinhold manor. I had gotten a job to take care of some children over the summer. I would never know who they really were. Still I needed the money for university so I went to Iceland. My first impression wasn’t the best. It was pouring down and I had forgotten my umbrella. I had to go on a three-hour bus journey and still go up muddy hills for an hour. By the time I got there, I was covered in grass, mud and thorns. They didn’t get a very good impression of me either. Mr. and Mrs. Reinhold were always expressionless. The biggest sign of emotion I ever saw was a sarcastic laugh from Mrs. Reinhold. However, apart from that, everything was fine, until that night.

I had only been there for a couple of weeks. My room was comfortable, and the children were fine. They never got into fights and didn’t need my help. I had a feeling I wasn’t meant to take care of them, and it wasn’t by sheer chance. I would often stay up late, since no one seemed to care and that’s when the noises started. They weren’t annoying at first. I thought it was probably the wind. But they continued and got louder. It was like something been dragged something heavy. I decided to head out for a while, to find out what they were. I followed the noise in the dark, carefully so I wasn’t caught. This led me to a room, where there were crates full of bottles and jars, probably a wine cellar.

The place was awfully creepy. I couldn’t see much since the place very few windows, but cobwebs kept getting tangled in my hair. There was a very faint smell of blood. I heard talking and hid behind a crate. The voices were too muffled by the distance, but I perfectly heard as they closed the door and locked me in. I would have to wait until the morning to get out, so I decided to have a look. There was a box that stood out. It had cold and meaty stuff. Food. That was it, a food and wine cellar. A ray of moonlight hit the contents and I let out a shrill scream. In there were no other than the kids I was taking care of. Reduced and cut up to bits, organs in jars next to them. This was an organ cellar. The door opened. I saw a shadow holding scissors. It wasn’t human. I knew. It knew. And it was going to find me.

The Cold Black Fingers

By Tomas de Medeiros Nobre dos Reis

It was a late November night on the day of the incident. My car had broken down in the middle of the run down dirt road I had taken to avoid traffic.

I called the mechanic and he said he would only be there in the morning. Seconds later, the battery on my cellphone died. I would be stranded if I didn’t get any help, and spending the night in the car seemed like a terrible idea.

I got out of the car and locked it. The night was chilly and damp, it gave me goosebumps as the cold air touched the bare skin on my arms. There was a full moon too on that fateful night which only barely let me see, casting a silver grayish, almost ghostlike veil over my surroundings. Whereas on other occassions I would contemplate the moon in all its beauty, it just gave me the chills to look at it. I gazed out in the vecinity, surveying the area around me. I knew a few minutes away from where my car was there was a small group of rural houses, a small village. I decided to go there and see if any of the locals could help me.

I started walking slowly. The road was full of ruts and bumps for me to trip on so I was being careful. Tall hedges on either side of me lined the track giving me only two possible directions. Ahead, a tall oak loomed menacingly over the hedge. Its branches cast a shadow like none I’d ever seen before, so thick and black it looked palpable. The tendrils of shade seemed to writhe on the ground like the most venomous serpents. As I went on, I made sure not to step on the shadow and walk around it. It made no sense, it had no place. The shadow was too... unusual. What had once been worry started being uneasiness that seeped into my body, something was wrong.

In that moment I started to speak to myself. The silence was so deep that disturbing it seemed like sacrilege but I needed to calm myself.

My voice came out as a low raspy croak. Trembling at every word, I told myself I was being irrational. Darkness couldn’t hurt me so there was no reason for being scared.

I could see the village close. I resumed my walk at a steadier pace, counting my steps out loud, I felt an urge, a disturbing desire to run towards the village while my rational mind tried to fight it down.

Then, a tendril of shade caught the corner of my eye. Unsure of what I had seen, I kept on. Another one. I didn’t want to look back but I couldn’t help myself.

Thursday 10th April 2014 18 Student World 2

As I craned my head backwards I saw cold black fingers reaching out for me.

I ran. My heart raced. I tripped on a hole in the ground and fell, hitting my forehead.

I got up and saw in a quick glance the darkness closing up on me, like a black tide it swallowed the road at its pace. The shadows from the hedges were increasing in size and fusing with each other, intertwining their misty fingers. I ran. There was a pole lamplight in the village not far away. I could make it. The last few metres.

I managed to get to the light and immediately sprawled on the floor.

My head throbbed in pain and I could feel the blood pulsing and rushing in my temple. I couldn’t see from one eye. Cold air hurt my throat as I breathed heavily. The darkness couldn’t get me here. I was safe.

I looked at all the houses windows shut and no lights on. Except for one of them. Through the sole window of this house an old man stared at me. I yelled at him for help.

He didn’t budge. Instead, he laughed a deep terrible laugh that shook my entire soul.

The lamplight went out.

The shadows engulfed me.

Can you live forever?

Unfortunately, we can’t, however one special type of jellyfish can! To look at, the Turritopsis nutricula (a type of jellyfish) is nothing special. Originally from the Caribbean, these jellyfish can now be found all over the world. What makes them unique, not just among jellyfish, but all living things, is that they can revert back to their polyp stage. This would be like a 50 year old turning back into a baby. The jellyfish can then begin growing all over again. This means that these jellyfish are, potentially, immortal.

How many muscles do you have in your fingers?

None at all. Our fingers are actually controlled by muscles in our arms. Our fingers therefore are actually moved as if they were puppets by tendons controlled by our forearms. Try drumming your fingers on a surface, and watch the skin on your wrist ripple.

Diamonds in the sky… literally

Scientists have studied almost 700 real planets outside the solar system, and planet PSR J1719-1438 b isn’t made of gas, or rock…. it's made of diamond. This planet actually used to be a star, as the debris that's left over after the star dies forms a planet. Carbon just needs lots of heat and pressure to become a diamond. On Earth, that happens underground. But in this particular spot in space, the conditions were just right for the entire interior of that former star to harden, crystallize and turn into a planet- sized gem.

Why do chameleons change their skin colour?

Not to blend into their background, never have, never will. They change their colour depending on their emotions, as they change regularly, eventually they will match their backgrounds, but only until the next change. A chameleon would have little use for blending in, their main prey, insects, can hardly see them anyway, and being an apex predator, chameleons don’t have any natural predators.

Thursday 10th April 2014 29 Student World Green Team Competiton

By Yaiza Fei Fernández

We are organizing a Primary competition. You need to make objects with recycled things. The

rules are simple:

• You need to use recycled objects. Although some things, like things to stick the parts together with don’t need to be recycled.

• You can do it in pairs but you need to be in

the same house.

• You can make anything you want:

-Jewelry, clothes, decorative things… Have fun! The last day for entry is Friday 28th

march. Also, I want to encourage secondary students to take part in the Green team!

Enjoy yourself!!!
