Santiago, directeur de cotutelle Résumé Cette thèse de doctorat porte sur une forme contemporaine du vodou haïtien telle qu'elle est pratiquée dans la diaspora et plus particulièrement à Montréal. J'ai choisi de focaliser mon étude sur l'une de ses formes présentes en Haïti, appelée vodou asogwe. Ma thèse concerne ainsi l'étude d'une religion diasporique et transnationale dans le contexte de la globalisation. Les données empiriques de ma recherche amènent au constat que la pratique du vodou asogwe à Montréal repose autant sur des adaptations à son nouveau contexte que sur une continuité de sa logique profonde. J'ai élaboré ma méthodologie de manière à pouvoir saisir dans la mesure du possible le sens de la pratique de l'intérieur, en pratiquant régulièrement avec mes interlocuteurs. J'ai mené mes recherches de doctorat pendant deux ans au sein d'une famille spirituelle, tout en prenant également en compte le lignage religieux plus large dans lequel celle-ci s'inscrit. Cela m'a également amené à observer la ritualité et à faire des entretiens dans plusieurs lieux répartis entre Montréal et Haïti, connectés par ce lignage religieux transnational. L'analyse que je mène articule l'étude des religions transnationales à l'approche théorique de l'anthropologie ontologique. La démonstration vise alors à analyser la manière dont l'adaptation du vodou asogwe diasporique à la globalisation permet à celui-ci de se perpétuer tout en étant inséré dans la modernité mais en reposant toujours sur une ontologie distincte. Pour déployer cette analyse, la thèse est organisée autour de l'étude de la dynamique entre adaptations et continuités dans la pratique du vodou asogwe qui se manifeste notamment dans son inscription spatiale et ses processus de territorialisation. Mot-clés : Montréal, Haïti, diaspora, transnationalisation, religion, vodou asogwe, globalisation, ontologie. iii Abstract This Ph.D. thesis deals with a contemporary form of Haitian vodou practiced in the diaspora and especially in Montreal. I chosen to focus my study on one of its version existing in Haiti, called vodou asogwe. Thereby my thesis analyzes a diasporic and transnational religion in the context of globalization. Empiric data of my research expose that the practice of vodou asogwe in Montreal lies as on adaptations to this new context than a continuity of its deep logic. I designed my methodology to grasp the meaning of the religious practice from the inside, regularly practicing with my interlocutors. I led my Ph.D. fieldwork during two years into a spiritual family, while taking into account the wider religious lineage in which it is embedded. This drove me to observe the rituality and to conduct interviews in several locations spread between Montreal and Haiti, all of them connected by this transnational religious lineage. The analysis I develop combines the study of transnational religions to the theoretical lens of ontological anthropology. The demonstration aims to analyze the way in which adaptation of diasporic vodou asogwe to globalization allows it to perpetuate itself while being inside a modern context but still lying on a specific ontology. In order to unfold this analysis the thesis is structured by the study of the dynamic between adaptations and continuities in the practice of vodou which appears in particular in its spatial insertion and its territorialization process.     VODOU AND POLITICAL REFORM IN HAITI: SOME LESSONS FOR THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY JOHN MERRILL The record of attempts by developed nations to promote democracy in the developing world is, at best, uneven. Foreign efforts to build democracy in places as diverse as Somalia and Vietnam have failed, in part because of developed nations' inability to understand traditional culture and religion. These foreigners have bypassed traditional local cultures in their designs for political reform, missing opportunities to lash reforms onto structures familiar to the people of the region. Today, the political potential of religious and cultural institutions remains largely untapped. Haiti, a chronic example of this problem, may provide the international community an opportunity to change its approach to intervention. Through- out Haiti's turbulent history, foreign attempts to influence its political dynamic invariably have been unsuccessful. Some initiatives have succeeded briefly but have failed over the longer term, in part because foreigners or Haitian elites who sought to control the nation's political behavior routinely have misunderstood, ignored, trivialized, or suppressed fundamental tenets of tra- ditional Haitian culture. Policies conceived first in Paris during the colonial era, then at the Vatican, later in Washington during the U.S. Marine occupation of 1915-1934, and most recently by the United Nations, have all tended to provoke internal friction and exacerbate social divisions, making stable gov- ernance and political development even more elusive. But the history of foreign initiatives in Haiti need not necessarily determine the outcome of the current attempt by the international community to con- tribute to Haiti's recovery and rehabilitation.

Haitian Vodou flags (drapo Vodou) are little known to vexillologists, but have been studied by scholars in the fields of art, anthropology, African-American studies, and other disciplines. An investigation of prior scholarship from these areas demon- strates that this category of flags is not only significantly different than the flags usually examined by vexillologists, but they also have much to teach us about the study of flags as a multidisciplinary exercise. There are several books that are focused on Vodou flags. Patrick Arthur Polk, a prolific researcher on the topic, has produced a colorful and informative book titled Haitian Vodou Flags (1999).     Notes and References 1 Religion and Politics 1. One can think more particularly of the Voodoo stories reported by Newell (1888), Alaux (1856), and St John (1884). During the US occupation, several books with a sensationalist character were written on Voodoo. Among the most popular were Seabrook (1929), Craige (1934), and Wirkus and Taney (1931). 2. Caribbean colonial societies are often referred to in the literature as 'slave societies' (Goveia, 1965), 'slave plantation societies' (Hall, 1971), 'colonial societies' (Balandier, 1966), 'plantation societies' (Wagley, 1971), and 'Creole societies' (Brathwaite, 1971). 3. Baron de Wimpffen (1911, p. 27), who visited Haiti for the first time in 1788, noted that most of the colonists were not there to stay. My data emerges from archival and secondary source research in France, the United States, and Haiti. I bring focus to the study of collective consciousness in two fields, African American & African Studies and Sociology, with attention to how consciousness was shaped by material conditions, was reinforced in spheres of interaction, and guided social action among early modern members of the African Diaspora in colonial Haiti (Saint Domingue). The first paper hypothesizes that in addition to being sacred events, ritual gatherings were simultaneously free spaces wherein rebels enhanced oppositional consciousness and solidarity by campaigning for liberation and seeking new mobilization recruits. Findings suggested that during African-Saint Dominguans’ gatherings at burial sites, in churches, and at nighttime calenda assemblies, they re-produced aspects of their religious cultures away from the observation of whites. Ritual free spaces allowed participants to reclaim personal and collective power by using sacred material artifacts; and to communicate seditious speech concerning freedom, independence, and the injustice of slavery.

Il est toujours très répandu au Bénin au Togo et à Lomé. Mais la diffusion s’est également faite dans plusieurs autres pays s’est également accompagnée de certaines touches propres au pays récepteur de cette religion c’est donc ainsi qu’on le retrouve sous différentes formes à Cuba « Santéria Lukumi ou Regla de Ocha», en Haïti, au Brésil « Candomblé ou Umbanda », aux Etats-Unis et plus particulièrement en Louisiane « voodoo ». Ainsi le vaudou est la religion de la majorité du peuple haïtien et aussi une façon de vivre et de donner du sens au monde. CURIOSITY SEEKERS, TIME TRAVELERS, AND AVANT-GARDE ARTISTS: U.S. AMERICAN LITERARY AND ARTISTIC RESPONSES TO THE OCCUPATION OF HAITI (1915-1934) by SHELLEY STEVENS Under the Direction of Dr. Renée Schatteman ABSTRACT U.S. American literary and creative artists perform the work of developing a discursive response to two critical moments in Haitian history: the Revolution (1791-1804) and the U.S. Marine Occupation (1915 to 1934), inspiring imaginations and imaginary concepts. Revolutionary images of Toussaint Louverture proliferated beyond the boundaries of Haiti illuminating the complicity of colonial powers in maintaining notions of a particularized racial discourse. Frank J. Webb, a free black Philadelphian, engages a scathing critique of Thomas Carlyle’s sage prose “On the Negro Question” (1849) through the fictional depiction of a painted image of Louverture in Webb’s novel The Garies and their Friends (1857).
