  • PEENEMUENDE, NATIONAL SOCIALISM, and the V-2 MISSILE, 1924-1945 Michael
ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: ENGINEERING CONSENT: PEENEMUENDE, NATIONAL SOCIALISM, AND THE V-2 MISSILE, 1924-1945 Michael Brian Petersen, Doctor of Philosophy, 2005 Dissertation Directed By: Professor Jeffrey Herf Departmen t of History This dissertation is the story of the German scientists and engineers who developed, tested, and produced the V-2 missile, the world’s first liquid -fueled ballistic missile. It examines the social, political, and cultural roots of the prog ram in the Weimar Republic, the professional world of the Peenemünde missile base, and the results of the specialists’ decision to use concentration camp slave labor to produce the missile. Previous studies of this subject have been the domain of either of sensationalistic journalists or the unabashed admirers of the German missile pioneers. Only rarely have historians ventured into this area of inquiry, fruitfully examining the history of the German missile program from the top down while noting its admi nistrative battles and technical development. However, this work has been done at the expense of a detailed examination of the mid and lower -level employees who formed the backbone of the research and production effort. This work addresses that shortcomi ng by investigating the daily lives of these employees and the social, cultural, and political environment in which they existed. It focuses on the key questions of dedication, motivation, and criminality in the Nazi regime by asking “How did Nazi authori ties in charge of the missile program enlist the support of their employees in their effort?” “How did their work translate into political consent for the regime?” “How did these employees come to view slave labor as a viable option for completing their work?” This study is informed by traditions in European intellectual and social history while borrowing from different methods of sociology and anthropology.

  • The Bible and the Space Age
The Bible And The Space Age Walter Scragg 1960 SIGNS PUBLISHING COMPANY (Australian Conference Association Limited, Proprietors) WARBURTON VICTORIA AUSTRALIA The Bible And The Space Age Preface HAS ANYTHING HAPPENED in the past few years to make the Bible out of date? Could it be that men in orbit, satellites, moon and planet probes are making the Word of God a dead letter? These are questions that men everywhere are asking. And they are legitimate questions. What has happened to the Bible in this the beginning of the space age? It somehow is fitting that this series of timely articles should come from one of the sources of today’s tremendous advances in space technology-radio. “The Bible and the Space Age,” presents a series of addresses that have been broadcast by the international radio program, The Voice of Prophecy. In them you will find counsel that is both timely and refreshing. Each article is designed to answer one or more questions about the relating of the Bible and Christianity to the days in which we live. Because these answers come from men who write from personal experience, as well as from a deep knowledge of the Bible, you will find much to satisfy and encourage. In addition, you will find reasonable answers to many questions that may be puzzling you personally. Five different speakers on the broadcast have prepared these articles, though this may be hard to detect because of their common doctrinal background. The Voice of Prophecy broadcast may be heard throughout Australia and much of the remainder of the world.

  • Tintin and the Adventure of Transformative and Critical Fandom
. Volume 17, Issue 2 November 2020 Tintin and the adventure of transformative and critical fandom Tem Frank Andersen & Thessa Jensen, Aalborg University, Denmark Abstract: Using Roland Barthes’ and John Fiske’s notion of the readerly, writerly, and producerly text, this article provides an analysis and a tentative categorization of chosen transformative, fanmade texts for the comic book series The Adventures of Tintin. The focus is on the critical transformation of, and engagement with, the original text by academics, professional fans, and fans of popular culture. The analysis identifies different ways of transformational engagement with the original text: ranging from the academic writerly approach of researchers, over professional fans rewriting and critically engaging with the original text, to fanfiction fans reproducing heteroromantic tropes in homoerotic stories, fans of popular culture using Tintin figurines to document their own travels, and finally, fans who use Tintin covers as a way to express critical political sentiments. With Barthes and Fiske these groups are defined by their way of approaching the original text, thus working either in a readerly producerly or writerly producerly way, depending on how critical and political the producerly attitude is in regard to the original text. Keywords: The Adventures of Tintin, fan albums, fanfiction, fan communities; readerly, writerly, producerly reception Introduction In recent years, it has been quiet around the forever young reporter Tintin and his faithful friends Snowy and Captain Haddock. A motion capture movie about three of Tintin’s adventures failed to garner a larger following, despite having Steven Spielberg as the director (The Adventures of Tintin, Columbia Pictures, 2011).

The German Rocket, Jet, and Nuclear Programs of World War II By Max Lutze * * * * * * * * * Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for Honors in the Department of History UNION COLLEGE March, 2016 2 Abstract German military technology in World War II was among the best of the major warring powers and in many cases it was the groundwork for postwar innovations that permanently changed global warfare. Three of the most important projects undertaken, which were not only German initiatives and therefore perhaps among the most valuable programs for both the major Axis and Allied nations, include the rocket, jet, and nuclear programs. In Germany, each of these technologies was given different levels of attention and met with varying degrees of success in their development and application.
