The 2010 Grand Prix Scientifique has been awarded to the French research scientist, Michel Haïssaguerre, for his revolutionary discoveries in the field of cardiac arrhythmias and more particularly his work into the causes and treatment of atrial and ventricular fibrillations. Despite its prevalence and economic burden, treatments remain relatively ineffective. Interventional treatments using catheter ablation have shown more success in cure rates than pharmacologic methods for AF. However, success rates diminish drastically in patients with more advanced forms of the disease. The focus of this research is to develop a mapping strategy to improve the suc- cess of ablation.
