Page 3 ‘Falcon Heights will never be the same’ One year after Castile shooting, residents and mayor reflect on the aftermath and the future. By Kristal Leebrick Philando Castile. Twelve months ago, most Falcon Heights residents had never heard the name. That changed July 6, 2016, when Castile, a 32-year-old black man from Robbinsdale, was shot and killed by St. Anthony police officer Jeronimo Yanez during a traffic stop on Larpenteur Avenue. Now, the man whose mother said “never talked much here” is “making a lot of noise.” Those words of Valerie Castile are etched into a wooden pillar erected at the makeshift memorial site next to where her son was killed, and Philando Castile’s legacy is shaping public policy in this small St. Paul suburb. Valerie Castile’s words “struck home with me,” said Falcon Heights Mayor Peter Lindstrom. “Philando Castile was not a member of our community, did not live in our community, but what happened to him was transformational for our community and hopefully far beyond. Hays Zlatko Plese ©2011 Benjamin Lee White ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT BENJAMIN LEE WHITE: Imago Pauli : Memory, Tradition, and Discourses on the “Real” Paul in the Second Century (Under the direction of Bart D. Ehrman) The following dissertation is a theoretical and methodological examination of the legacy of the Apostle Paul in the second century. It explores the way he was remembered in the century after his death, as well as the discursive practices that accompanied claims about the “real” Paul in a period in which apostolic memory was highly contested. Five questions drive the inquiry: 1) How do we measure Pauline influence in the second century? (methodology); 2) How did various second-century writers imagine Paul and what resources were employed to produce a given interpretation of the Apostle? (exegesis); 3) What is meant, from a theoretical standpoint, by the language of tradition and memory, concepts often invoked by Pauline scholars, but hardly ever defined or explored? (theory); 4) What interests stand behind ancient discourses on the “real” Paul? (ideology); and 5) How did Paul become “ the Apostle” for so many different kinds of Christian communities in the second century? (history). -

The Church Awakens: African American and the Struggle for Justice Index The Links have been put in the Reference column Topic Summary Reference Conference of Church Workers Among Colored People The Conference of Church Workers Among Link Colored People (CCWACP), a largely black organization, began to press the General Convention for full inclusion shortly after its establishment in 1886. Originally organized by John Peterson, a teacher and deacon at St. Philip’s Church in Harlem, and Alexander Crummell as the Convocation of the Colored Clergy in 1882, the CCWACP included clergy and lay persons, seeking to fully integrate black Episcopalians into the life of the Church. General Convention Special Program Link The 1969 Special General Convention was a moment of self-recognition when the Episcopal Church confronted its place in public life and tested the theological understanding of the baptismal covenant and the true meaning of catholicity in the diversity of God’s creation. “General Convention II,” as it was first known, was an unusual event in the Church’s history: only one other Convention, that of 1821, had been called outside of the regular triennial period, and it spotlighted the Church at a time of extreme turmoil, division, and dramatic confrontation with the past. After an eye-opening tour of Harlem with activists of African descent, Presiding Bishop John Hines pushed through the regularly convened General Convention of 1967 a “Special Program” (GCSP). ATR/lOl.l Unapologetic Apologetics: The Essence of Black Anglican Preaching Harol d T. Lewis* In his 1892 sermon preached at the centennial celebration of St. Thomas Church, Philadelphia, the Rt. Rev. Henry Codman Potter, bishop of New York, declared, “I do not think it would have been very strange if the colored race, after it had been freed, should have refused to follow the white peoples God. It shows a higher order of intelligence and an acute discernment in the Afri can race to have distinguished the good from the evil, in a religion that taught all men were brothers, and practiced the opposite. ” In this brief homiletical observation, Bishop Potter captured the pe rennial challenge of the Afro-Anglican preacher; who, despite ex perience to the contrary, must demonstrate that the catholic and incamational truths of the gospel are no less demonstrable in the lives of people of color. This article maintains that this is accom plished both apologetically, in the classical sense of its being ar gued on the basis of biblical and theological truths, yet unapologetically, in the colloquial sense of being straightforward and without apology, as in the homiletic offerings of such preach ers as Demond Tutu, Walter Dennis, and Kelly Brown Douglas. To Comfort the Afflicted and Afflict the Comfortable In giving thought to the topic of the essence of black Anglican preaching, I was reminded of a book written in 1982 by Bishop John Melville Burgess, entitled Black Gospel, White Church.
