Evidence of a recovery being under- way in major alterations and addi- tions, which are those projects worth over $10,000 per job, is still patchy. There was at least a modest recovery in aggregate for these projects from around the middle of last year. This is an important segment of the market. The most popular major renovation jobs are ground floor extensions and upper floor extensions (followed by kitchen and bathroom renovations). Should higher end property prices continue to out-perform the lower and middle segments of the market, as has occurred over 2010 to date, then a decent recovery in major ren- ovation projects is highly likely.

Con- sequently, products such as insulating glass units (IGUs) are becoming increasingly important in the Australian glazing landscape.

Sandro Ianni, Chairman of the Insulating Glass Man- ufacturers’ Association (IGMA), says that IGU manufacturers and window fabrica- tors need to work together to ensure a high and consistent standard as expected by consumers.

“As the use of IGUs continues to grow, it is vital that the window and glass industries are geared to meet market demands and expectations,” says Sandro. “An IGU is only one component of a double or triple glazed window. For an effective, energy efficient solution, window fabricators need to ensure com- patibility between all of the different components.”

Whether it’s the wrong sealant, the lack of drainage holes or ill-supporting setting blocks, the result is an inferior prod- uct, which will not perform as desired. AS4666 Insulating Glass Units (currently being updated) provides guidelines on these areas, including compatibility.
