Rejoice in the Lord By Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R. Archbishop of Newark June 18, 2021 / Vol. 2, No. 19 Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, On April 21 of this year, I offered reflections on the topic “Synodality: the long game of Pope Francis” during a webinar offering of the annual Cardinal Bernardin Common Cause lecture sponsored by Loyola University Chicago’s Hank Center for the Catholic Intellectual Heritage. Because the full “script” for this lecture is very long—probably too long for an online presentation, but certainly for this newsletter—I summarize it below. I hope that my reflections offer some helpful insights into the importance of the term “synodality,” which literally means “walking together,” both for the teaching of our Holy Father Pope Francis and for the life and ministry of the Church at all times but, perhaps especially today. Christians are called to follow in the footsteps of Jesus, but we never do this alone. We are fellow travelers, sojourners, with each other and with Christ Himself. We walk together in good times and in hard times, in rough weather and on clear, sunny days. We support and encourage each other, especially when one of us stumbles and falls. Synodality is, or should be, the way our Church journeys through time with open hearts, attentively listening to the needs of God’s people as they are expressed in gestures (often more than words) and in longing to see the face of God revealed in Jesus and in all of us, His missionary disciples. I invite you to reflect prayerfully on the understanding of synodality that Pope Francis has proposed (in continuity with his predecessors in the Petrine ministry). -

We are writing this letter to voice our disbelief and objection to your intent to canonize Franciscan Friar Junipero Serra. When you were first selected Pope our Amah Mutsun Tribal Council discussed your selection on a number of occasions and we were very optimistic. We were hopeful that you would understand the plight of the indigenous descendant and how they have been ignored and marginalized by society. We applauded your words of peace, justice, truth, and dignity. We were also optimistic that you would understand how our people need to recover from generations of oppression and pain. Your decision to canonize Fr. The Cardinal Deacon asked: "You have been canonically elected Pope. Do you accept? " He was answered in the affirmative. Again he asked: "What name have you chosen for yourself?" The answer came quickly: "Benedict XV." (A.A.5., VI, p. 494) It aII happened quite suddenly. Pope Pius X was a seemingly healthy, though elderly, man. When, on August 15, I9L4, he was affIicted with a slight attack of bronchitis. no one considered it serious. But on the 19th, His Holiness took a decided turn for the worse, and on the following day, at 1:15 in the morning, he died "in the peace of Christ," probably more from a broken heart than from any physical ailment. For only months before, the assassination of the Archduke Francis Ferdinand presaged the early onslaught of the rvvar which had threatened Europe for so long. -

Reflection Friday Week 22 Pope St Gregory the Great 2021 Pope Gregory the Great (540 - 604) was born in Rome and entered public service, being the son of an aristocrat. He became Prefect of the City of Rome, an office he held for some years. He founded a monastery in Rome and others in Sicily, then became a monk himself. He was ordained deacon and sent as an envoy to Constantinople on a 5-year mission. He was elected Pope on 3rd September 590, the first monk to be elected to this office. He reformed the administration of the Church’s estates, devoting the surplus to the poor and ransoming prisoners. He negotiated treaties with the Lombards who were ravaging northern Italy, and, by cultivating good relations with these and other barbarians, he was able to keep the Church secure in areas where Roman rule had broken down. He sent Augustine and his monks to England in 596, continually providing them with advice and support and (in 601) sending reinforcements. He wrote extensively on pastoral care, spirituality and morals, and designated himself “servant of the servants of God.” He died on 12th March 604. As Pope St Gregory brought about great changes in the Church so our present Pope Francis has called upon us all to work for the healing of creation. He has asked us to dedicate the month of September to praying and working in a special way for creation. The call is now urgent. “The ecological crisis is a summons to profound interior conversion… whereby the effects of our encounter with Jesus Christ become evident in our relationship with the world around us. -

For the whole of mankind was freed from the slavery of sin by the shedding of the blood of Jesus Christ as their ransom, and there is no one who is excluded from the benefit of this Redemption: hence the Divine Pastor has one part of the human race already happily sheltered within the fold, the others He declares He will lovingly urge to enter therein: "and other sheep I have, that are not of this fold; them also must I bring, and they shall hear my voice" (John x. 16). 2. We make no secret, Venerable Brethren, that the first sentiment we felt in our heart, prompted certainly by the goodness of God, was the inexpressible yearning of a loving desire for the salvation of all mankind, and in assuming the Pontificate our sincere wish was that of Our Lord Jesus Christ Himself, when about to die on the Cross: "Holy Father, keep them in Thy name, whom Thou hast given me" (John xvii.
