Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary

Friday, the Eleventh of May Two Thousand Eighteen Ten o’clock in the morning First United Methodist Church Evanston, Illinois

The Seminary

Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary is a graduate professional school of theology related to The United Methodist Church. Degree programs offered by the seminary are: (M.Div.), five master of arts (M.A.) degrees, master of theological studies (M.T.S.), of ministry (D.Min.), and (Ph.D.), as well as programs to prepare United Methodist candidates for certification and for ordination as deacons.

Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary is the result of the interweaving of three institutions: Garrett Biblical Institute (established in 1853) in Evanston, Illinois; Chicago Training School (established in 1885) in Chicago, Illinois; and Evangelical Theological Seminary (established in 1873) in Naperville, Illinois.

Garrett Biblical Institute was founded by Mrs. Eliza Garrett, widow of real estate tycoon and former mayor of Chicago, Augustus Garrett. Mrs. Garrett’s desire to invest her inheritance in the establishment of a theological school stemmed from her opinion that the Methodist preachers of her day were “equaled by none as to zeal, but surpassed by many as to training.”

The Chicago Training School was an important force for women in ministry and for developing service agencies throughout Chicago. The school merged with Garrett Biblical Institute in 1934. The integration of the two schools meant that the scope of Garrett’s vision for training Christian leaders expanded to include significant numbers of women and leaders of church-based institutions for the betterment of social conditions.

Evangelical Theological Seminary was founded by the Evangelical United Brethren Church. One of its founders, in fact, was a Garrett graduate, I. W. Heidner. As a result of the union of the Methodist Church with the Evangelical United Brethren Church by action of the United Methodist General Conference in 1968, Evangelical Theological Seminary merged with Garrett Theological Seminary (formerly Garrett Biblical Institute) in 1974. Now, as Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary, it is the second oldest United Methodist seminary in the country and the oldest in the Midwest. Marti Gates Lundy Master of Divinity, 1993 Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary

Rev. Dr. Marti Lundy has made her home in Indiana as a pastor and leader in the community. She received her master of divinity from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary and her doctor of ministry in leadership and spiritual formation from George Fox Theological Seminary. Her dissertation, “Offering Hope: Providing Ministry to the Chronically Ill,” works to inform churches on how to better care for people with chronic illness.

Lundy is currently the Senior Pastor of Evangelical United Methodist Church (EUM) in Huntington, Indiana, and has been there since 2000. In her time at EUM, she has more than doubled worship attendance, led a capital campaign, coordinated a building remodeling project, and increased participation in church groups. She also spearheaded a community outreach program called Mission Huntington where members of the church go out and bear witness to the needs of their community through various service projects. Lundy serves as the Chair of the Northeast District Committee on Ministry and the Secretary of the Episcopacy Committee for the Indiana Conference of The United Methodist Church.

Lundy also serves her community as a board member in the Harmony Initiative, a group through Huntington University comprised of local leaders to inspire community diversity and inclusion. Recently, she was selected as the Indiana Bicentennial Torchbearer in recognition of her outstanding service in the community.

Lundy is married to Rev. Kent Lundy, who is also a Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary alumnus. Together, they have two sons, Joshua and Nathan.

Jim Winkler President and General Secretary of the National Council of Churches of Christ in the USA

Jim Winkler was born and raised a “preacher’s kid” and has worked with The United Methodist Church for over 25 years. He is a graduate of the University of Illinois with a bachelor of arts in African history. After graduating college, Winkler went abroad to work as a short-term missionary with the Pacific Conference of Churches in Suva, Fiji. While there, he worked as the Program Director for a study on the impact of multinational corporations in the Pacific Islands. He returned to the world of academia to pursue a master of arts in American history at George Mason University in Virginia.

Winkler dove into work for The United Methodist Church as the Peace Project Director at the Methodist Federation for Social Action based in New York, New York. He continued his work focused on issues of justice both domestically and abroad as he joined the General Board of Church and Society and became the Seminar Designer for the United Methodist Seminars on National and International Affairs in Washington, D.C. Winkler worked in this position for over a decade, designing multi-day spiritually-based public policy seminars for youth and adults involving both domestic and international issues. In 1996, Winkler became the Director of Annual Conference Relations where he connected the work of the board with United Methodist annual conferences and local congregations. He continued working in the General Board of Church and Society as he moved into the position of Assistant General Secretary in the Ministry of Resourcing Congregational Life in 1999. This position allowed him the ability to administer grants to ethnic churches, direct work in the annual conference relations, supervise the summer Ethnic Youth Adult intern program, and oversee the seminars he had started designing at the start of his career. In 2000, he started his thirteen-year tenure as the General Secretary of the General Board of Church and Society where he served as the elected leader of the public policy and social action agency of The United Methodist Church. In this position, Winkler made great strides in the board’s endowment, increasing it to its highest point at $16 million. He also worked with a board of directors, comprised of clergy and lay leaders from Africa, Europe, the Philippines, and the United States. Throughout his time in this position, he participated in numerous international delegations of religious leaders, and wrote a column for the agency’s weekly newsletter, Faith in Action.

In November of 2013, Winkler was elected as President and General Secretary of the National Council of Churches of Christ in the USA (NCC). The NCC is an ecumenical partnership comprised of thirty-eight Christian groups. As President and General Secretary, Winkler is the primary spokesperson and focuses on addressing issues of mass incarceration and interreligious relationships concentrated on peace. In this position, he has already tripled the financial resources of the NCC, started Hindu-Christian and Buddhist-Christian dialogues, initiated a racial justice truth-telling initiative, and begun an update of the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. He has received numerous awards throughout his career, including an honorary doctor of divinity by Claremont School of Theology in 2016.

Winkler resides in Virginia with his wife, Michelle Tello, and they have three children. Board of Trustees
