Plans call for a 45 game schedule, a mid-season all-star game, and a season-ending championship game. The first professional baseball league in Israel has attracted the attention of such famed Jewish personalities as: Sandy Koufax - Hall of Fame pitcher with the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers; drafted by Modi'in Miracle. Art Shamsky - star of the New York Mets, the "miracle" team that won the World Series in 1969. Art manages the Modi'in Miracle. Ken Holtzman - great pitcher with Chicago Cubs and Oakland Athletics. He pitched 2 no-hit games and manages the Petach Tikvah Pioneers. Ron Blomberg - star with the New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox; now manages the Bet Shemesh Blue Sox. Daniel Kurtzer - former U.S. Ambassador to Israel; now Commissioner of IBL. · Dan Duquette - General Manager of Montreal Expos and Boston Red Sox; now IBL Director of Baseball Operations. With sections organized around de cades, American Jews and America's Game ranges from the 1930s to the present. Original face-to-face interviews, conducted in venues as disparate as Rancho Mirage, Phoenix, Manhattan, Cooperstown, Boston, Baltimore, Kissimmee, and Tel Aviv, provide the core content. Telling photographs, many taken by the author, burnish the commentary. Baseball’s attraction for Jews, the varieties of Jewish baseball experience, anti-Semitism, evolving Jewish identity, relations between the generations, and the future of American Jewry re ceive significant attention. Mr. Elliott Abrams is a Senior fellow for Middle Eastern studies at the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) in Washington, DC. Mr. Abrams served as Deputy Assistant to The President and Deputy National Security Advisor in the administration of President George W. Bush, where he supervised U.S. policy in the Middle East for the White House. Prior to that Mr. Abrams served in many high ranking public service positions. Including as Assistant Secretary of State in The Reagan Administration, for which he received The Secretary of State's Distinguished Service Award from Secretary George P. Shultz. Mr. Abrams holds a BA and JD from Harvard University and an MA from The London School of Economics. Prof. Dmitry Adamsky is an Associate Professor at the Lauder School of Government, Diplomacy and Strategy, IDC Herzliya. Prof. Adamsky has been a pre- and post-doctoral fellow at Harvard University, a visiting fellow at the Institute of War and Peace Studies, Columbia University and at the Norwegian Institute for Defense Studies. His research interests include international security, strategic studies, cultural approach to international relations, modern military thought, nuclear strategy, American, Russian and Israeli national security policy. Prof. Adamsky has published on these topics in Foreign Affairs, Journal of Strategic Studies, Intelligence and National Security, Studies in Conflict and Terrorism, Journal of Cold War History, Defense and Security Studies and has contributed chapters to edited volumes and encyclopedias on modern military and international history. The recognition and kavod you have received by being named a Builder of Israel are well deserved. The United Jewish Federation of San Diego County was established ten years before the founding of the State of Israel. Dear Friends, For many generations it has been a Jewish tradition to use the phrase “until 120” when wishing one another longevity. The age of 60 is considered relatively young for people in current times. That said, how young would a country be considered, when at the same age? Well, it would probably be considered a teenager state. We all have great expectations and high aspirations for this child that took 2000 years to conceive. Just like a teenager, its body has not fully developed yet, and it has yet to finalize its curves and features. However, when it is time to reflect on its achievements to date, we most certainly have a lot to be proud of as parents. As we have been preparing for this year long Israel @ 60 experience, planning for the different events, we came to realize the full magnitude of this miracle.
