RICKY REFF The 12th European Maccabi Games was truly “un grande evento internazionale”. Rome, the Eternal City, home to the oldest page 4 Jewish Community in the Diaspora, graciously welcomed over two thousand visiting Jewish athletes and their supporters representing 35 countries in Europe, as well as delegations from Australia, Brazil, Canada, Israel, Mexico and the USA. 2007/2008 We will never forget the thrill of marching into the stadium and the extraordinary fireworks at the Opening Ceremony, the MACCABI excitement of the competitions and the friendships that were made. It was also special to be part of the 777 party – the EVENTS largest Jewish gathering in Rome’s history held on July 7th. There was ample free time for the 85 members of Team USA and page 4 over 90 supporters to enjoy the artistic beauty and historic richness of Roman culture, tour the Great Synagogue and learn about the 2,000- year-old Jewish Community, visit Rome’s main tourist sites and savor the infinite variations of Italian and tra- ditional Jewish-Roman cuisine. Above all, we will always remember the feelings of unity, solidarity and friendship engendered 12TH EUROPEAN by the Games. These Games demonstrated that we are truly one global Jewish family, united by our shared traditions, culture MACCABI and love of Israel. We thank Chairmen Jodi and Ricky Reff and their son Ethan, for the magnificent job they did in organizing GAMES this event and for giving the members of our USA Delegation the opportunity to share the magic of Maccabi in Rome with pages 5 and 6 their Jewish brethren from countries around the world. For many, it was a profound life-changing experience. Continued on page 7 RECENT EVENTS page 7 PAN AMERICAN MACCABI GAMES December 2007 – January 2008 MACCABI USA I am so thrilled with our turnout, to date, for the USA Team scheduled to ENDOWMENTS/ compete in Buenos Aires as part of the 11th Pan American Maccabi SPONSORS Games. Fred Cohen, who is filling dual roles as both the Vice Chairman back cover and Sports Chairman for the Games, has been hard at work building a USA Team that will exceed 600 people participating in 20 sports. Additionally, Noralyn Carroll, who is our Missions Chair, has been diligently working with Phyllis Magerman our associates in Buenos Aires and with Gil Travel to ensure that all General Chair who participate as members of the Pan Am Mission have a fantastic experience. It is because of the tremendous efforts of Fred, Noralyn and the countless other volunteers, that we are sure to have one of our most successful Pan American Maccabi experiences ever, for both Team members and Mission participants. There is still availability to participate as a member of the Team in select sports, and limited availability to participate in the Mission. To do either, please visit our website at www.maccabiusa.com. On behalf of the Team USA Pan American Executive Committee, I wish you a happy and healthy New Year and look forward to seeing you in Buenos Aires in 5768! • Komisaruk Family
Komisaruk family Updated by Chaim Freedman 18/02/2020, to replace the material in his book “Eliyahu’s Branches, the Descendants of the Vilna Gaon and His Family”, Avotaynu 1997. Dov Ber (Berel) Komisaruk, born 1776 in Girtegola, Lithuania,1 (son of David Komisaruk [1747 - ] and Khana ?), died 1843 in Rassein, Lithuania.2 Oral tradition held that Berel came from a prominent family of scholars and communal leaders in Kovno. Lithuanian records prove that the family came from the city Rassein which was located in Kovno Gubernia (province). When the Jews were compelled to adopt a surname in 1804 Berel and his brothers or their father registered their surname as "Komisaruk". Later generations used various forms of this name: Komisaruk, Komesaroff, Komisar, Comisaroff, Comisarow. A full explanation of the reason for these variations and the historic basis for the family's activities in Rassein can be found in "Our Fathers' Harvest" (Chaim Freedman, Israel 1982, supplement 1990.) Berel Komisaruk and his family appear to have held a license to farm taxes which the local Jewish community was obliged to pay to the Russian government. In their case the particular tax was that due to the supply corp of the army, the Komisariat. This was probably the origin of this surname. Tradition claims some relationship with the famous Soloveitchik family of Kovno. Other than their common Levitic descent, this has not been established. The Soloveitchik family was amongst the founders of the Kovno community in the early 18th century. The 1816 Revision List for Rassein city includes two family groups with heads of family Leib, son of David Komisaruk and Velvel, son of David Komisaruk.

Along with Maccabi Australia we set out to review our constitution to allow non-Jewish athletes to be participants at Jewish clubs, as well as changing our definition of what constitutes a member to include any child with a Jewish parent. General members of the clubs will now be determined by a leader of a congregation or synagogue , with the criteria being a child to a Jewish mother or father. We believe it is better to embrace participants with a Jewish background that are seeking to be included by us rather than send them to other clubs.
