He moved to London to perform stand-up comedy and in 1985 got an opportunity to work with the BBC Children’s programmes, presenting several series including Playschool, Corners and Playdays. During this time Simon developed an interest in scriptwriting, initially contributing sketches, stories and songs, but by 1991 developing and writing 2 full series of Melvin and Maureen’s Musicograms, a musical edutainment for Children’s BBC. In 1994, he devised and wrote Children’s BAFTA nominated comedy-drama, Monster Café, before regularly contributing scripts to Sick as a Parrot (Quiz-show), Superbods (edutainment) and 1,2,3,4,5! Throughout the 90’s Simon was a regular scriptwriter for BBC and Channel 4 Schools programmes; including several series of Megamaths, Maths Man, Maths Challenge for the BBC and Maths Mansion, Tales from Wales and Jack and the Beanstalk for Channel 4. In 2000, he was invited to develop and script Kids Room 2K, an interactive CGI area at The Millennium Dome - he also wrote a younger children’s rhyming book Pucker Up, Buttercup! published by Pipbrook Mill. As children’s TV output went digital, Simon started working for CBeeBies and CBBC, writing for pre-school series Fimbles, Tikkabilla, Story Makers and the Children’s BAFTA winning series Boogie Beebies. More recently he’s contributed scripts for Nuzzle and Scratch, Kerwhizz, Show-Me Show-Me and Mr Bloom’s Nursery. The last few years has seen an interest from children’s animation producers and Simon has been lucky enough to work on classic children’s series Bob the Builder (Channel 5/Hit Ent.) and Go Jetters (CBeeBies/BBC Worldwide) as well as writing for the puppet-led Sesame Street/BBC co-production The Furchester Hotel.
