A group of students from South Gloucestershire and Stroud College in Filton, have spent the day with firefighters at Patchway Fire Station. As part of their Public Services course, the group of 22 young people were invited to the fire station to learn about the work of Avon Fire & Rescue Service (AF&RS) and to try some of the skills required by firefighters. During the session with Red Watch the group tried on breathing apparatus, worked in confined spaces, ran out hose and carried a ladder. They also took part in a fitness lecture and an exercise where their vision was obscured and they had to follow a guideline around the building, negotiating stairs, doors and other hazards. Dagenham is the first LFB fire station in the second phase of the rebuilding programme to be completed, with Dockhead, Leytonstone, Purley and Shadwell stations also set to be revamped in the next 12 months.
