H. Graves and M. Ram Murty [5] improved the above result for certain arithmetic pro- gression. In particular, they proved that for any integer b 2, r 2 be any fixed integer and under the assumption of the abc conjecture, then ≥ ≥ log x # primes p x : p 1 (mod r), bp−1 1 (mod p2) . { ≤ ≡ 6≡ }≫ log log x Then there has been further enhancement made by Y.-G Chen and Y. Ding [2]. The improvement is as follows. log x (log log log x)M # primes p x : p 1 (mod r), bp−1 1 (mod p2) , { ≤ ≡ 6≡ }≫ log log x where M is any fixed positive integer. Recently, Y. Ding [3] further improved the lower bound as # primes p x : p 1 (mod r), bp−1 1 (mod p2) log x. { ≤ ≡ 6≡ }≫ Now we consider the lower bound for non-Wieferich primes in balancing numbers with the assumption of the abc conjecture for the number field Q(√2). We state our main result after short introduction of balancing numbers.
2. BALANCING NUMBERS
The positive integer sequence Bn is a sequence of balancing numbers are defined by the recurrence relation B ={ 6B} B for n 1 with initial conditions B = n+1 n − n−1 ≥ 0 0, B1 = 1. The concept of balancing numbers were first propounded by A. Behera and G. K. Panda [1]. Definition 2.1. A positive integer n is said to be balancing number, if 1+2+ ... +(n 1)=(n +1)+(n +2)+ ... +(n + k), − where k Z+ is called balancer to the balancing number n. ∈ In other words, any n Z+ is a balancing number if and only if n2 is a triangular number, that is 8n2 +1 is∈ a perfect square and the Binet formula for balancing number is αn βn B = − , n α β − where α =3+2√2 and β =3 2√2 (see [1]). − Definition 2.2. A number l N is said to be period of the balancing sequence modulo m ∈ if Bl 0 (mod m) and Bl+1 1 (mod m) and if any n N satisfies these congruences, that is≡B 0 (mod m) and B≡ 1 (mod m), then l divides∈ n (see [7]). n ≡ n+1 ≡ The periodicity of balancing numbers are mainly help to find the divisibility condi- tions of these numbers. Moreover, G. K. Panda and S. S. Rout [7] conjectured that there A NOTE ON BALANCING NON-WIEFERICH PRIMES IN ARITHMETIC PROGRESSION 3
are only three prime numbers 13, 31, and 1546463 such that periods of balancing se- quence modulo those prime numbers are equal to the periods modulo its square. How- 8 ever, for any prime p > 2, B 8 0 (mod p), where p denotes the Jacobi symbol p− p ≡ [7]. Definition 2.3. An odd prime p is said to be a balancing Wieferich prime if it satisfies the congruence 2 B 8 0(modp ). p− p ≡ Otherwise it is called a balancing non-Wieferich prime. In [9] S. S. Rout proved that for any integer r 2, under the assumption of the abc ≥ conjecture for the number field Q(√2), there are at least O(log x/ log log x) balancing non-Wieferich primes p with p 1(modr). Then U. K. Dutta et al. improved the lower ≡ bound from log x/ log log x to (log x/ log log x)(log log log x)M , where M is any fixed pos- itive integer. More Recently, Y. Wang and Y. Ding [12] improved this lower bound to at least log x, but they were not included the condition that the balancing non-Wieferich primes p are in arithmetic progression. In this paper, we improve the lower bound to at least log x primes p x such that balancing non-Wieferich primes p are in arithmetic progression, under the≤ assumption of the abc conjecture. In particular, we prove the following result. Theorem 2.4. Let r 2 be any fixed integer and n> 0 be any square-free integer. Assume the ≥ abc conjecture for the number field Q(√2) is true. Then # primes p x : p 1(modr) ≤ ≡ 2 B 8 0(modp ) log x. p− p 6≡ ≫
