KAOKOVELD- & SKELETON COAST COMBO (including Kunene River Mouth)

● Ruacana – Departure-/starting venue We will meet at Ruacana Eha Lodge late afternoon/evening the day before departure. We will have a nice braai, get to know one another and brief everyone on the upcoming 4x4 adventure.

● Day 1: Ruacana – Epupa +/- 175km (5hrs) After breakfast, we travel along the wild Kunene river past Swartboois Drif until we reach the famous Epupa Falls early afternoon. The beautiful and scenic campsite will allow for a walk to Epupa Falls, swimming or guided tour to learn more about the traditional Himba tribe, or simply relax under the Makalani palm trees.

● Day 2: Epupa – Van Zyl’s Pass +/- 170km (8hrs) Today we back-track for 75km and then drive the rocky trail towards the well-known and famous Van Zyl’s Pass. Travelling will be extremely slow until we ‘crawl’ down the adrenalin- rush-creating Van Zyl’s Pass and reach the beautiful Marienfluss. The mountains open up into a more savannah-like landscape with lots of oryx, springbuck, and ostrich. Here we will set up ‘wild’ camp overlooking the Desert.

● Day 3: Van Zyl’s Pass – Kunene Waterfall +/-120km (7hrs) After breakfast we travel North towards Kunene River through Hartmanns Valley until we reach the ‘Point-of-no-return’, where the northern fields separate us from the . From here we enter- and travel through the until we reach Kunene waterfall, where we camp at the river with lovely water-pools and scenery for plenty photographic opportunities.

● Day 4: Kunene Waterfall – Bosluis Bay +/-70km (6hrs) ‘D-day’ means dune day. Spectacular dune driving with Kunene River and on the right and never-ending dune field to the left. Breathtaking views with lots of adrenaline, and the Kunene River mouth the aim. From the river mouth we travel South along the beach until we reach our campsite (dunes or beach – weather depending) near Bosluis Bay.

● Day 5: Bosluis Bay – Cape Fria +/-120km (7hrs) Today we have a long beach drive and venture past old historical relics, as well as the shipwreck site of the ‘Dunedin Star’ 1942 where passengers and crew seeked shelter on the beach. Lots of birds life present and the seal colony of Angra Fria will be visited. From here we travel inland for another 15km and seek shelter amongst some bushes and rocky hills.

● Day 6: Sarusas – Khumib river – Hoarusib river +/-80km Todays agenda: We leave the official Skeleton Coast Park, and travel up the Khumib river until we reach the Orupembe – Purros road, which we follow for the next +/-25km until we reach Purros, being the entrance for the Hoarusib river. We travel downstream this great river with its big Ana- and camelthorn trees for +/-20km searching for Desert Elephant, giraffes and possible rhinos. We set up camp for the night near the famous Clay castles.

● Day 7: Clay Castles – Sesfontein - Warm Quelle (Ongongo) We travel over some vast planes where Welwitschia plants are present until we enter the Hoanib river, famous for its Desert lions and Desert elephants. We visit Amspoort and then travel river upstream until we reach Sesfontein where we will refuel and travel to Warmquelle (Ongongo) and spend the last evening at this campsite with its natural warm spings.

● Day 8: After breakfast, we pack up, say goodbye, refuel and get on the road back home to get ready for the next exciting trips.

P.S. Routes can change in the rainy season should the Hoarusib- and Hoanib rivers be in flood.
