Sand derived from the Orange River is dragged by 11 12 swell waves and persistent southerly winds to accumulate in four successive dunefields in coastal 13 14 Namibia to Angola. All four dunefields are terminated by river valleys, where eolian sand is flushed 15 16 back to the ocean. And yet sediment transport continues at sea, tracing a 1800 km-long submarine 17 18 19 sand highway. Sand drift would extend northward to beyond the Congo if the shelf did not become 20 21 progressively narrower in southern Angola, where drifting sand is funnelled towards oceanic depths 22 23 via canyon heads connected to river mouths. Garnet-magnetite placers are widespread along this 24 25 coastal stretch, indicating systematic loss of the low-density feldspatho-quartzose fraction to the 26 27 28 deep ocean. More than half of Moçamedes Desert sand is derived from the Orange River, and the 29 30 rest in similar proportions from the Cunene River and from the Swakop and other rivers draining 31 32 the Damara orogen in Namibia. The Orange fingerprint, characterized by basaltic rock fragments, 33 34 clinopyroxene grains, and bimodal zircon-age spectra with peaks at ∼0.5 and ∼1.0 Ga, is lost 35 36 37 abruptly at Namibe, and beach sands farther north have abundant feldspar, amphibole-epidote 38 39 suites, and unimodal zircon-age spectra with peak at ∼2.0 Ga, documenting local provenance from 40 41 Paleoproterozoic basement. Along this oblique-rifted continental margin, beach placers are 42 43 dominated by Fe-Ti-Cr oxides with more monazite than garnet, and thus have a geochemical 44 45 46 signature sharply different from beach placers found all along the Orange littoral cell. High- 47 48 resolution mineralogical studies allow us to trace sediment dispersal over distances of thousands of 49 50 kilometers, providing essential information for the correct reconstruction of source-to-sink 51 52 relationships in hydrocarbon exploration and to predict the long-term impact of man-made 53 54 infrastructures on coastal sediment budgets. 55 56 57 58 59 60 Page 3 of 81 Sedimentology 3 1 2 3 4 5 6 �������������������������������������������������������������������������������������� 7 8 ��������������������������������������������������������������������������� 9 ���������������������������������������������������������������������������������� 10 11 ����������������������������������������������������������� 12 13 Talking Heads, Once in a lifetime, 1980. 14 � 15 16 � 17 ������������� 18 1 19 20 2 The long-distance transfer of huge detrital masses from one site to another on the Earth's surface is 21 22 23 3 of essence to understand sedimentological processes, enhance the resolution of source-to-sink 24 25 4 studies for hydrocarbon exploration, and improve the quality of environmental management 26 27 5 (Dickinson, 1988; Kaminsky ������, 2010; Scott ������, 2014). Hundreds of million tons of sediment 28 29 6 are carried each year for thousands of kilometers along the largest fluvial systems, such as the 30 31 7 Amazon, the Ganga-Brahmaputra or the Yellow River (Hay, 1998; Milliman & Farnsworth, 2011). 32 33 8 Equally established is the underwater transport of large sediment volumes over similar distances via 34 35 36 9 turbidity currents, as across the present Bengal and Indus Fans or their ancient analogues (Ingersoll 37 38 10 ������, 2003). Far less documented is the transport of large sediment volumes in the shallow sea, 39 40 11 which can cover distances of a thousand kilometers and more under the action of persistent 41 42 12 longshore currents. The major implications of littoral sediment transport for the paleogeographic 43 44 13 interpretation of ancient sedimentary deposits remain notably underexplored. 45 46 14 Only a few cases of modern ultralong-distance littoral sand transport have been documented in 47 48 49 15 detail so far. Swell-driven coastal-transport systems hundreds of kilometers in length exist in many 50 51 16 parts of the world (Silvester, 1962; Davies, 1972), as in southern Brasil (Calliari & Toldo, 2016) or 52 53 17 eastern Australia, where sand is dragged alongshore for ∼1500 km to north of Fraser Island, the 54 55 18 largest sand island on Earth (Boyd ������, 2008). Even longer is the littoral cell fed by the Orange 56 57 19 River, the object of the present study, rivaled in length only by the mud-dominated Amazon cell 58 59 60 Sedimentology Page 4 of 81 4 1 2 3 4 5 20 (Allison & Lee, 2004; dos Santos ������, 2016). Littoral dispersal of Nile sand under the action of 6 7 21 longshore currents fuelled by strong northwesterly winds, which has fed the beaches of Gaza and 8 9 22 Israel through most of the Quaternary, terminates at Haifa Bay and Akhziv submarine canyon ∼700 10 11 23 km from the Delta (Inman & Jenkins, 1984; Garzanti ������, 2015a). The littoral cell associated with 12 13 24 the Columbia River, the third largest in the United States by discharge, extends for 165 km only 14 15 16 25 (Ruggiero ������, 2005), although sand transport by turbidity currents continues for ∼1100 km along 17 18 26 a devious route reaching far into the Pacific Ocean (Zuffa ������, 2000). 19 20 27 The present article builds upon previous studies that monitored sediment dispersal along the 21 22 28 Atlantic coast of southern Africa – from the Orange River to the Namib Erg, and beyond to the 23 24 29 Skeleton Coast and Moçamedes Desert of southernmost Angola (Vermeesch ������, 2010; Garzanti 25 26 30 ������, 2012a, 2014, 2015b) – and focuses on physical processes of sediment mixing and unmixing 27 28 29 31 in the terminal tract of this ultralong submarine sand highway (Fig. 1). We will investigate 30 31 32 specifically provenance of sand accumulating in the Moçamedes Desert north of the Cunene River 32 33 33 mouth (Fig. 2) and along the Angolan coast farther north (Fig. 3), in order to understand where, 34 35 34 how, and why the compositional fingerprint of Orange-derived sand is eventually lost after ∼1800 36 37 35 km of littoral drift. We will examine whether and to what extent northward sand transport is 38 39 36 blocked on land by incised river valleys and/or at sea by submarine canyons, the influence of 40 41 42 37 atmospheric and oceanic circulation, and the role played by shelf width, representing both a control 43 44 38 and a consequence of longshore sediment drift. An accurate evaluation of such factors is essential to 45 46 39 understand the physical processes promoting such a large-scale transfer of sediment volumes, and 47 48 40 how they are reflected in the composition of continental-margin sediments. 49 50 41 � 51 52 42 ������������������ 53 43 54 55 44 The coastal region of southern Angola is affected profoundly by atmospheric and oceanic 56 57 45 circulation in the southeastern Atlantic Ocean. Here the warm, southward flowing Angola Current 58 59 60 Page 5 of 81 Sedimentology 5 1 2 3 4 5 46 converges with the cold, northward flowing Benguela Current, forming the Angola-Benguela front 6 7 47 (Meeuwis & Lutjeharms, 1990; Shannon & Nelson, 1996; Lass ������, 2000). Reflecting this oceanic 8 9 48 circulation pattern and the influence of the subtropical high-pressure system, climate along the coast 10 11 49 is very arid between ∼30ºS and ∼15ºS. Annual rainfall increases progressively from as low as 15 12 13 50 mm at Foz do Cunene and Baia dos Tigres, to 20 mm at Tombua, 50 mm at Namibe, and 200 mm at 14 15 16 51 Lobito (Guilcher, 2010).     Angolan Giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis ssp. angolensis) Appendix 1: Historical and recent geographic range and population of Angolan Giraffe G. c. angolensis Geographic Range ANGOLA Historical range in Angola Giraffe formerly occurred in the mopane and acacia savannas of southern Angola (East 1999). According to Crawford-Cabral and Verissimo (2005), the historic distribution of the species presented a discontinuous range with two, reputedly separated, populations. The western-most population extended from the upper course of the Curoca River through Otchinjau to the banks of the Kunene (synonymous Cunene) River, and through Cuamato and the Mupa area further north (Crawford-Cabral and Verissimo 2005, Dagg 1962). The intention of protecting this western population of G. c. angolensis, led to the proclamation of Mupa National Park (Crawford-Cabral and Verissimo 2005, P. Vaz Pinto pers. comm.). The eastern population occurred between the Cuito and Cuando Rivers, with larger numbers of records from the southeast corner of the former Mucusso Game Reserve (Crawford-Cabral and Verissimo 2005, Dagg 1962). By the late 1990s Giraffe were assumed to be extinct in Angola (East 1999). According to Kuedikuenda and Xavier (2009), a small population of Angolan Giraffe may still occur in Mupa National Park; however, no census data exist to substantiate this claim. As the Park was ravaged by poachers and refugees, it was generally accepted that Giraffe were locally extinct until recent re-introductions into southern Angola from Namibia (Kissama Foundation 2015, East 1999, P. Vaz Pinto pers. comm.).     N A M I B I A G 3 E 0 O 9 1 L - O Y G E I V C R A U S L NAMIB DESERT Source: Roadside Geology of Namibia One of five west coast, low-latitude deserts of the world, the Namib extends along the entire Namibian coastline in an 80-120 km wide belt. Its extreme aridity is the result of the cold, upwelling Benguela Current, which flows up the west coast of Africa as far as Angola, and because of its low temperatures induces very little evaporation and rainfall (<50 mm per year). It does, however, create an up to 50 km wide coastal fog belt providing sufficient moisture for the development of a specialist flora and fauna, many of which are endemic to the Namib. In addition, the lagoons at Walvis Bay and Sandwich Harbour are designated wetlands of international importance, because of their unique setting and rich birdlife, including flamingo, white pelican and Damara tern. Larger mammals like the famed desert elephant, black rhino, lion, cheetah and giraffe can be found along the northern rivers traversing the Skeleton Coast National Park. Geomorphologically, the Namib includes a variety of landscapes, including classic sand dunes, extensive gravel plains, locally with gypcrete and calcrete duricrusts, elongated salt pans, ephemeral watercourses forming linear oases, inselbergs and low mountain ranges. Along the coast, wind-swept sandy beaches alternate with rocky stretches, in places carved into striking rock formations (e.g. Bogenfels Arch). Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013, the “Namib Sand Sea“ between Lüderitz and the Kuiseb River encompasses such well-known landmarks as Sossusvlei and Sandwich Harbour, while the fabled Skeleton Coast north of the Ugab River is notorious for its numerous ship wrecks.

The results are based on three surveys carried out between 2016 and 2018, supplemented by literature synthesis. The area studied includes headwater streams and tributaries feeding the Okavango Delta, namely the Cubango, Cuito and Cuanavale Rivers, which together produced 35 species, and those flowing into the Zambezi River system, the Cuembo, Cuando, Luanginga and Lungué-Bungo Rivers which together produced 29 species. Twenty-one species were identified from the Cubango River, a fast flowing, rocky substrate river, different in character to all the other rivers surveyed. The other rivers, which all flow over Kalahari sand substrate with dense rooted aquatic macrophytes, generally lacking rocky substrate, produced 33 species between them. Prior to this research, only one mayfly species had been described from Angola in 1959.

    Namibia and Angola: Analysis of a symbiotic relationship Hidipo Hamutenya* Introduction Namibia and Angola have much in common, but, at the same time, they differ greatly. For example, both countries fought colonial oppression and are now independent; however, one went through civil war, while the other had no such experience. Other similarities include the fact that the former military groups (Angola’s Movimiento Popular para la Liberacão de Angola, or MPLA, and Namibia’s South West Africa People’s Organisation, or SWAPO) are now in power in both countries. At one time, the two political movements shared a common ideological platform and lent each other support during their respective liberation struggles. The two countries are also neighbours, with a 1,376-km common border that extends from the Atlantic Ocean in the east to the Zambezi River in the west. Families and communities on both sides of the international boundary share resources, communicate, trade and engage in other types of exchange. All these facts point to a relationship between the two countries that goes back many decades, and continues strongly today. What defines this relationship and what are the crucial elements that keep it going? Angola lies on the Atlantic coast of south-western Africa. It is richly endowed with natural resources and measures approximately 1,246,700 km2 in land surface area. Populated with more than 14 million people, Angola was a former Portuguese colony. Portuguese explorers first came to Angola in 1483. Their conquest and exploitation became concrete when Paulo Dias de Novais erected a colonial settlement in Luanda in 1575.

    Namibia is a country of astonishing contrasts, home to the oldest desert on the planet, the white saltpans of Etosha National Park, the uninhabited beaches of the Skeleton Coast and the vast wilderness of Kaokoveld. These unique landscapes are not only home to an astonishing diversity of wildlife, but also to endemic and special wildlife that are found nowhere else on Earth. There are approximately 4 000 species of plants, over 650 bird species and 80 large mammal species. The landscape is defined by an arid, harsh climate and a long geographical history. The western part of the country has a mixture of enormous sand dunes, open plains, rugged valleys, escarpments and mountains and it is here that the oldest desert on the planet, the Namib, is found. The eastern interior is a sand-covered, more uniform landscape and contains the country's second great desert: the Kalahari, a vast and sparsely vegetated savannah that sprawls across the border into South Africa and Botswana. The flat vastness of Namibia's deserts is relieved by a belt of broken mountains and inselbergs (the highest is the Brandberg at 2 579 m / 8 461 feet above sea level), deep dry river valleys that serve as linear oases, savannah and woodlands, and long stretches of sandy beaches along the dramatic Skeleton Coast. All this is in contrast to the rich grasslands, and subtropical woodlands of the Caprivi area in the north- east, the mopane woodlands of Etosha National Park, and the rich coastal lagoons of the Atlantic Ocean on the western coastline. Namibia’s maze of national parks, reserves and community conservancies makes up an impressive 20% of the country, providing many pristine areas for unrivalled wildlife observation.

The Namibian Journal of Environment (NJE) covers broad environmental areas of ecology, agriculture, forestry, agro-forestry, social science, economics, water and energy, climate change, planning, land use, pollution, strategic and environmental assessments and related fields. The journal addresses the sustainable development agenda of the country in its broadest context. It publishes two categories of articles.     THE KUNENE RIVER MOUTH: MANAGING A UNIQUE ENVIRONMENT by JOHN RICHARD BERNARD PATERSON Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Environment and Development in the Centre for Environment, Agriculture and Development, School of Applied Environmental Sciences University of KwaZulu-Natal Pietermaritzburg 2007 Abstract The Kunene River Mouth (KRM) is one of only two river mouths in Namibia. The Kunene river and river mouth is bisected by the international border between Namibia and Angola, and lies between two protected areas, Iona National Park in Angola and Skeleton Coast Park in Namibia. The governments of Namibia and Angola have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to link these two parks as a transfrontier park. This study further proposes a transfrontier Marine Protected Area to protect the marine environment surrounding the KRM and the Angola Benguela Front. The KRM is a fluvially dominated freshwater river mouth. The area is a biogeographically important biodiversity hotspot. The remoteness and pristine character contribute to the aesthetic appeal of the area. This study provides a profile of the KRM addressing its conservation value in terms of both biodiversity and aesthetic value, making use of the concept of “sense of place”. An analysis of all current and potential stakeholders is presented and their interests, activities and potential threats are evaluated. The main stakeholders are Government: the Ministry of Environment and Tourism, the Angolan Government, Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Namwater, Ministry of Mines and Energy, and the Kunene Regional Council. The private sector presently has a small stake in the area, with the exception of the Northern Namibia Development Corporation who is prospecting for diamonds at the KRM.
