This word comes from the Latin cetus meaning "a large sea animal”, and the Greek word ketos, meaning "sea monster”. - Cetaceans are mammals. - They are warm-blooded (they maintain a constant internal body temperature). - Like other placental mammals, cetaceans give birth to well-developed calves and nurse them with milk from their mammary glands. - Cetaceans have lungs, meaning they breathe air. An individual can last without a breath from a few minutes to over two hours depending on the species. Cetacea are deliberate breathers who must be awake to inhale and exhale. -
Balaenoptera Bonaerensis – Antarctic Minke Whale
Balaenoptera bonaerensis – Antarctic Minke Whale compared to B. bonaerensis. This smaller form, termed the “Dwarf” Minke Whale, may be genetically different from B. bonaerensis, and more closely related to the North Pacific Minke Whales, and thus has been classified B. acutorostrata (Wada et al. 1991; IWC 2001). This taxonomic position, although somewhat controversial, has been accepted by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), and the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS). MARINE ECOLOGY PROGRESS SERIES Vol. 144: 175-183,1996 Published December 5 Mar Ecol Prog Ser Abundance, maturity and growth of the krill species Thysanoessa inermis and T. longicaudata in the Barents Sea Padmini Dalpadado*, Hein Rune Skjoldal Institute of Marine Research, PO Box 1870 Nordnes, N-5024 Bergen, Norway ABSTRACT. Thysanoessa inermis and 7. longicaudata were the dominant krill species observed in the western and central Barents Sea between 1984 and 1992. Both species are typically boreal and sub- arctic, and were found in very low abundances in the Arctic water masses in the northern Barents Sea. High abundances (up to 100 to 200 ind. m-2) of 7. inermis and T. longicaudata were found in the slope and adjoining deep waters south and south east of the Svalbard Bank. The main spawning times of T inermis and T longicaudata occurred in May-June and coincided with the spring phytoplankton bloom. 7. inermis has a life span of 3 to 4 yr, while 7. longicaudata can live up to 2 yr. Growth took place from late winter to aut'umn; a marked negative growth occurred during the late autumn and winter periods. The seasonally oscillating von Bertalanffy growth function gave a reasonably good fit to the growth curves. Coinciding with a strong reduction In the older capelin stock between 1984 and 1987, there was a subsequent increase in the abundance and biomass of T. inermis and 7 longicaudata. A decrease in krill abundance and biomass was observed to correspond with the rapid recovery and growth of capelin stock up to 1991. -

Natural Heritage Fin Whale & Endangered Species Balaenoptera physalus Program State Status: Endangered www.mass.gov/nhesp Federal Status: Endangered Massachusetts Division of Fisheries & Wildlife DESCRIPTION: Fin Whales can weigh between 40 and 80 tons and measure 22 to 26 meters long, second in size only to the Blue Whale. Females tend to be slightly larger than males by 5-10%. Fin Whales have a sleek, streamlined body with a V-shaped head and are dark grey to brown on top, with white underneath. They have a tall, hooked, dorsal fin located two-thirds of the way down their body. Fin Whales are commonly called Razorbacks for the ridges on the middle of the back behind the dorsal fin. The unique asymmetrical coloration on the head easily separates this species from all of the other baleen whales. On the right side, the lower jaw is white, and the baleen plates in the front half of the mouth are also white, but abruptly change to dark Photo courtesy of NOAA in the back half of the mouth. By contrast, the lower left jaw is gray and all of the baleen plates on the left side are dark. This coloration may aid in herding fish during east of Boston and Cape Ann. Our ships, the Arctic Sunrise and the Esperanza, left Cape Town in South Africa on November 20th to intercept the Japanese whaling fleet. On December 21st, we made first contact with the whalers and we have doggedly pursued them since. Greenpeace activists have successfully kept the whaling fleet on the run, positioned themselves in the path between harpoons and whales, and documented whales in agony from exploding harpoons. But, bearing witness to the whale slaughter on the high seas is not enough. We need you. Whaling is big business and we, consumers, have a role to play in bringing this bloody business to an end. During this expedition, ANT-XXVIII/4, an opportunistic marine mammal survey was carried out. Data were collected for 26 days along the externally preset cruise track, resulting in 295 hrs on effort. Within the study area 248 sightings were collected, including three different species of baleen whales, fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus), humpback whale ( Megaptera novaeangliae ), and Antarctic minke whale (Balaenoptera bonaerensis ) and one toothed whale species, killer whale ( Orcinus orca ). More than 62% of the sightings recorded were fin whales (155 sightings) which were mainly related to the Elephant Island area (116 sightings). Usual group sizes of the total fin whale sightings ranged from one to five individuals, also including young animals associated with adults during some encounters. Larger groups of more than 20 whales, and on two occasions more than 100 individuals, were observed as well. These large pods of fin whales were observed feeding in shallow waters (< 300 m) on the north-western shelf off Elephant Island, concordant with large aggregations of Antarctic krill ( Euphausia superba ). This observation suggests that Elephant Island constitutes an important feeding area for fin whales in early austral fall, with possible implications regarding the regulation of (krill) fisheries in this area. -
