She was the managing editor of the Catholic register in the1980’s and editor of a group of magazines for the Canadian jewellery industry and then public relations manager for one of Canada’s leading application development software providers. Joanne became director of the CCRL in 2004. She is often interviewed by the media to discuss freedom of speech, religious freedom and fairness in the portrayals of faith groups. She has appeared on most of the popular discussion programs on TV and radio as well as being quoted in national newspapers. She has a regular column in the Catholic Register. The League, founded in1985 as an independent lay organization, is faithful to the teachings of the Magisterium and works in cooperation with local bishops across Canada. League activities include combating defamation and prejudice in the media, defending those challenged in courts and human rights tribunals for upholding religious teachings in the public arena. It also promotes a culture of life through participation in abortion and euthanasia debates. Sister Maureen Baldwin CND, Executive director of NAVFD spoke at the June 16 luncheon, following Mass celebrated by Chaplain Ed Curtis. Sister hails from Sydney, N.S. and has been a member of the Congregation of Notre Dame of Montreal for 22 years and spent 17 years as a teacher and counsellor in the Fredericton NB school system. She came to Toronto in 2007 to do graduate studies at Regis College and is now a doctoral student at the Toronto School of Theology. In May 2009 she became the first Executive Director of the National Association of Vocational and Formation Directors. NAVFD developed formation events for new sisters, brothers and priests. It now includes those in vocation ministry as well as leadership positions in religious congregations. Recently, NAVFD has taken as its primary purpose to create and foster a Vocation Culture in the Catholic Church of Canada, a culture where each Christian by virtue of his or her baptism is empowered to identify and respond to the mission to which he or she is called as a member of the Body of Christ. Sister Maureen firmly believes that through collaborative ministry, the Church will continue to grow and be a source of strength in today’s world. R.I.P. The Latin name Laetare means Rejoice. Laetare Sunday is taken from the words of the introit (entrance antiphon), laetare Jerusalem (rejoice with Jerusalem) from Isaiah 66:10-11. “Rejoice, O Jerusalem: and come together all you that love her: There is a more joyful tone at this halfway point in the rejoice with joy, you that have been in sorrow: that you may exult, Lenten season. Like Gaudete Sunday midway through and be filled from the breasts of your consolation.” (Isaiah 66:10f) Advent, Laetare Sunday reminds us of the event we look “I rejoiced when they said to me: ‘we shall go into God’s House!” forward to at the end of the Penitential Season, and the (Psalm 122:1) joy in anticipation of the Resurrection, as well as providing a brief relaxation from the austerity of Lent. As with Gaudete Sunday, the liturgical traditions reflect this joy.

Hands Respectful and Clean: Cajetan and the Reformation WILLIAM PAUL HAAS Tomasso de Vio (1469-1534), later known as Cardinal Cajetan, was a well-respected philosopher and theologian who became progressively more enmeshed in the religious and political turmoil of the sixteenth century. He struggled to understand the thrust of Luther's new way of thinking and to bring the Church to deal with the challenge of radical reform in all aspects of Church life. Some of the changes which the Cardinal recommended to several of the popes he served seemed as revolutionary in his own day as they would in the present. Gradually his perception of the Church as an inclusive rather than an exclusive community evolved. This essay is not intended to be the last word on Cardinal Cajetan's role in the emerging Reformation. Rather, it tries to trace Cajetan's efforts to understand the personalities and forces which both propelled and resisted the unavoidable crisis.

Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Immaculate Conception Peoria, Illinois A Self-Guided Tour DISCOVER SAINT MARY’S Welcome to Peoria's Cathedral! In the middle ages, it was common for cathedrals to decorate their floors with elaborate labyrinths. These mazes in stone were very physical metaphors for the intentional wandering of the spiritual life. While there is no labyrinth in this cathedral, I invite you to wander nonetheless. This booklet is not designed to be an exhaustive historical guide or museum catalogue. This is not a theme park map to move you from point to point. Instead, we hope to provide a bit of history, a theological context, and an overview of this cathedral that is mother-church to Catholics across Central Illinois. I have been praying in this church both as a seminarian and a priest for over a decade. Over these past few years witnessing the grand restoration and parish life, I have especially been spending a lot of time here. I still never tire of wandering the church, talking to saints who are old friends, discovering new details in the windows, and gazing at the stars. I invite you to wander, to wonder, to pray. St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception, pray for us! Fr. Alexander Millar Rector 2 HISTORY OF SAINT MARY CATHEDRAL In 1851, Bishop James VandeVelde of Chicago asked a Vincentian missionary, Father Alphonse Montouri, CM, to build a new church in Peoria, offering him $200 to carry out the plan. In a year, St. Mary’s Church (right) was built and was said to be one of the finest churches between Chicago and St.

O'Connor: The Roots of Pope John Paul II's Devotion to Mary THE ROOTS OF POPE JOHN PAUL II'S DEVOTION TO MARY* In a world threatened by nuclear holocaust and ecolog ical disasters, its monetary system tottering under the weight of unpayable debts, and masses of people growing restive under inequitable economic systems and repressive govern ments, with starvation threatening the poorer nations and terrorism disturbing the wealthy, Pope John Paul II pro claimed 1987/88 a Marian Year. This appeared to some as the futile gesture of a sentimental man out of touch with the problems of the real world and its centers of power. But such a view hardly fits a man who endured the Nazi occupation of Poland during his youth and then spent most of his adult life contending effectively with a Communist re gime propped up by the Russians.
