YIKA-VWAZA TRUST RESEARCH STUDY REPORT N (2017/18) Vascular Plant Survey of Vwaza Marsh Wildlife Reserve, Malawi By Sopani Sichinga ([email protected]) September , 2019 ABSTRACT In 2018 – 19, a survey on vascular plants was conducted in Vwaza Marsh Wildlife Reserve. The reserve is located in the north-western Malawi, covering an area of about 986 km2. Based on this survey, a total of 461 species from 76 families were recorded (i.e. 454 Angiosperms and 7 Pteridophyta). Of the total species recorded, 19 are exotics (of which 4 are reported to be invasive) while 1 species is considered threatened. The most dominant families were Fabaceae (80 species representing 17. 4%), Poaceae (53 species representing 11.5%), Rubiaceae (27 species representing 5.9 %), and Euphorbiaceae (24 species representing 5.2%). The annotated checklist includes scientific names, habit, habitat types and IUCN Red List status and is presented in section 5. i ACKNOLEDGEMENTS First and foremost, let me thank the Nyika–Vwaza Trust (UK) for funding this work. Madire Agricultural Research Council-Plant Protection Research Institute, Private Bag X134, Queenswood, 0121 South Africa The exotic vine Macfadyena unguis-cati (L.) A.H.Gentry (Bignoniaceae), cat’s claw creeper,has become a significant threat to the biodiversity of a variety of sensitive ecosystems in South Africa. Owing to the nature of the infestations, as well as the difficulties and prohibitive costs associated with both mechanical and chemical controls, biological control is considered to be the most practical and sustainable means of successfully managing the weed in South Africa. The biological control programme against M. unguis-cati was initiated in 1996 and resulted in the release of Charidotis auroguttata Boheman (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Cassidinae). Despite repeated releases, initial rates of establishment were low. Where successfully estab- lished, populations of the beetle have been slow to build-up, leading to only limited impact on the weed. Prompted by this lack of success, as well as the high potential for further spread of the weed, additional natural enemies were sought. Two lace bugs, Carvalhotingis visenda Drake & Hambleton, and Carvalhotingis hollandi Drake (Hemiptera: Tingidae), a leaf-mining beetle Hylaeogena (Hedwigiella) jureceki Obenberger (Coleoptera: Buprestidae), a leaf-tying moth Hypocosmia pyrochroma Jones (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) and a seed-feeding weevil Apteromechus notatus (Hustache) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) were subsequently imported into quarantine in South Africa for host-specificity testing. With the exception of A. notatus, all have been approved for release and are exhibiting promising initial rates of establishment and damage at a number of field localities. -

Box FM730, Famona, Bulawayo, Zimbabwe Vegetation Survey of Mt Gorongosa, page 2 SUMMARY Mount Gorongosa is a large inselberg almost 700 sq. km in extent in central Mozambique. With a vertical relief of between 900 and 1400 m above the surrounding plain, the highest point is at 1863 m. The mountain consists of a Lower Zone (mainly below 1100 m altitude) containing settlements and over which the natural vegetation cover has been strongly modified by people, and an Upper Zone in which much of the natural vegetation is still well preserved. Both zones are very important to the hydrology of surrounding areas. Immediately adjacent to the mountain lies Gorongosa National Park, one of Mozambique's main conservation areas. A key issue in recent years has been whether and how to incorporate the upper parts of Mount Gorongosa above 700 m altitude into the existing National Park, which is primarily lowland. [These areas were eventually incorporated into the National Park in 2010.] In recent years the unique biodiversity and scenic beauty of Mount Gorongosa have come under severe threat from the destruction of natural vegetation. This is particularly acute as regards moist evergreen forest, the loss of which has accelerated to alarming proportions. -

Field characteristics, flowering periods and some pollinators of the orchids are also given. In high forest with the canopy 30 m or more above the ground, 50.4 % of the trees (phorophytes) 10 m or higher carried epiphytes, compared to 14.8% for the phorophytes in regenerating forest. The ratio between fern and orchid species was 1 :3 at 500-700 m alt. and 1:1 at 1000-1300 m. Most of the epiphytic species occupy a ± restricted part of the phorophyte, as judged by their occurrence in the five sectors in which the phorophytes were subdivided. Ten different epiphyte communities are recognized. Their floralcomposi tion and development are also described. -

The origin of fire-adapted lineages is a long-standing question in ecology. Although phylogeny can provide a significant contribution to the ongoing debate, its use has been precluded by the lack of comprehensive DNA data. Here we focus on the ‘underground trees’ (= geoxyles) of southern Africa, one of the most distinctive growth forms characteristic of fire-prone savannas. 2. Conservation of Plant Biodiversity of Namatimbili Forest in the Southern Coastal Forests of Tanzania

Department of Botany, P. O. Box 35060, University of Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania. Received 7 October, 2014; Accepted 8 December, 2014 The aim of this study was to determine the ecological characteristic of Namatimbili Forest in terms of plant species composition, stem size class structure, stand biomass, diversity, and distribution and identify endemic and threatened plant species that are found within the forest. Data were sampled by using transect method that were established in various habitats within the forest. A total of 312 plant species were found in 62 families, where Fabaceae (51 species) was the highly represented of all families. Of all plant species recorded, 26 are cited under IUCN red list and 36 are endemic species of East African Coastal Forests.The woodlands were more diverse with a Shannon’s index of 2.72 ± 0.21 followed by the riverine forest (1.64 ± 0.19), coral rags (2.28 ± 0.32) and closed canopy evergreen forest (2.32± 0.17) and this pattern was also applied to the species evenness and the difference among vegetation types was significant. The DCA ordination revealed a major variation at DCA-Axis1 where samples from riverine forest separated quite clearly and positioned on the right side of the ordination space. -
