Justin Frankeny: Genre and/as Distinction: The Mars Volta and the Symbolic Boundaries of Progressive Rock (Under the direction of Dr. Aaron Harcus) In the early 2000’s, The Mars Volta’s popularity among prog(ressive) rock fandom was, in many ways, a conundrum. Unlike 1970s prog rock that drew heavily on Western classical music, TMV members Omar Rodriguez-Lopez and Cedric Bixler-Zavala routinely insisted on the integral importance of salsa music to their style and asserted an ambivalent relationship to classic prog rock. This thesis builds on existing scholarship on cultural omnivorousness to assert that an increase in omnivorous musical tastes since prog rock’s inception in the 1970s not only explains The Mars Volta’s affiliation with the genre in the early 2000s, but also explains their mixed reception within a divided prog rock fanbase. Contrary to existing scholarship that suggests that the omnivore had largely supplanted the highbrow snob, this study suggests that the snob persisted in the prog rock fanbase during progressive rock’s resurgence (ca. 1997-2012), as distinguished by their assertion of the superiority of prog rock through discourses of musical complexity adapted from classical music. -

Rock Album Discography Last up-date: September 27th, 2021 Rock Album Discography “Music was my first love, and it will be my last” was the first line of the virteous song “Music” on the album “Rebel”, which was produced by Alan Parson, sung by John Miles, and released I n 1976. From my point of view, there is no other citation, which more properly expresses the emotional impact of music to human beings. People come and go, but music remains forever, since acoustic waves are not bound to matter like monuments, paintings, or sculptures. In contrast, music as sound in general is transmitted by matter vibrations and can be reproduced independent of space and time. In this way, music is able to connect humans from the earliest high cultures to people of our present societies all over the world. Music is indeed a universal language and likely not restricted to our planetary society. The importance of music to the human society is also underlined by the Voyager mission: Both Voyager spacecrafts, which were launched at August 20th and September 05th, 1977, are bound for the stars, now, after their visits to the outer planets of our solar system (mission status: https://voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status/). They carry a gold- plated copper phonograph record, which comprises 90 minutes of music selected from all cultures next to sounds, spoken messages, and images from our planet Earth. There is rather little hope that any extraterrestrial form of life will ever come along the Voyager spacecrafts. But if this is yet going to happen they are likely able to understand the sound of music from these records at least. -

I am using the term ‘Industrial Revolution’ in its widest sense – not necessarily from the first use of industrial machinery at Coalbrookdale, for example (the Industrial Revolution did start in England), or whatever other landmark of the beginnings of our modern age that a variety of people have used. What I have in mind is the change from a mainly rural, mainly feudal economy to an urban, partly industrial, economy, with two important, for us, concomitant changes: a rise in the level of tech- nology and the rise of an urban middle class. -

GENTLE GIANT I Gentle Giant furono fondati dai tre fratelli Shulman (Derek , Phil e Ray ) nel 1970 , un anno dopo lo scioglimento del precedente gruppo degli Shulman, Simon Dupree and the Big Sound . Ai fratelli si unirono il chitarrista Gary Green e il tastierista e vibrafonista Kerry Minnear ; diversi batteristi si alternarono nel corso degli anni. Phil fu l'unico degli Shulman ad abbandonare il gruppo, nel 1972 . I primi album del gruppo, ovvero l'omonimo album di debutto e i successivi Acquiring the Taste (1971 ), Three Friends (1972 ), Octopus (1972 ) e In a Glass House (1973 ), sono generalmente considerati le opere più significative del gruppo. Sono caratterizzate da uno stile fortemente eclettico e sperimentale, che unisce elementi jazz e hard rock ad atmosfere medievali e barocche (un giornalista inglese, per definire la loro musica, coniò l'espressione baroque and roll ). Fra i tratti più chiaramente distintivi di questi primi lavori si devono però citare soprattutto il polistrumentismo e la sovrapposizione di linee armoniche in modo talvolta ricercatamente dissonante (sovrapposizione spesso basata sull'artificio musicale della fuga). Un esempio tipico (da Acquiring the Taste ) è Edge of Twilight che nel breve volgere di 3'30" circa vede l'impiego di una ventina di strumenti e l'intreccio di almeno sei temi musicali diversi. All'interno di queste strutture spesso classicheggianti si inserisce una chitarra particolarmente hard , dal suono molto saturato, e parti vocali basate su strutture armoniche complesse, simili per profondità polifonica a quelle di altri gruppi progressive come gli Yes , ma caratterizzate spesso dalla ricerca di originali dissonanze (ben lontane - ad esempio - dalle rassicuranti armonie di Jon Anderson ) e da un uso sapiente del contrappunto. -
Dissertation on the Music of Gentle Giant
I Gentle Giant The Missing Piece in Rock’s Academia Dominic Stone MUSS3140 200781299 Submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of BA Music School of Music, University of Leeds, March 2016. I Abstract Gentle Giant developed alongside bands such as Yes, Genesis, King Crimson, Jethro Tull and Emerson, Lake and Palmer, but never achieved the same level of commercial success. This is reflected in a lack of academic attention paid to them, despite being recognised as surpassing these other bands in musical complexity. The reasons for their lack of success are the both the challenging nature of their music, namely the abundance of eclecticism, virtuosity and complexity, and the poor management decisions and bad luck which plagued their career. This included tour cancellations, inadequate promotion and support, concert mismatches and their fifth album being withheld from release in America. They never cultivated a decent following in England, as the initial bad reaction from those who remembered them as the pop group Simon Dupree and the Big Sound resulted in the bands management prioritising European and American audiences. Two areas of the music are analysed – the first including concepts, themes, lyrics and imagery and the second being their eclecticism. The themes of social critique and literature are explored, as well as the concept album Three Friends, revealing a sophisticated interaction between music and lyrics to forward the concept. The study of their eclecticism reveals what may be considered a medieval style to instead be a fascination with general early music, which is mixed with classical, folk, jazz and blues and rock music. -
