Lakshmi Vilas Palace The term Maharaja Palace actually refers to a series of palaces in Vadodara, Gujarat, India, constructed since the Gaekwad a prominent Maratha family started ruling the Baroda State. The first one was a building known as the Sarkar Wada. This building, not really a palace, was given up for the Nazarbaug Palace built in old classical style. After this the Lakshmi Vilas Palace, an extravagant building of the Indo- Saracenic school, was built by Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III in 1890 at a cost of GBP 180,000. Major Charles Mant was the architect. It is reputed to have been the largest private dwelling built till date and four times the size of Buckingham Palace. At the time of construction it boasted the most modern amenities such as elevators and the interior is reminiscent of a large European country house. It remains the residence of the Royal Family, who continue to be held in high esteem by the residents of Baroda. Its ornate Darbar Hall, which is sometimes the venue of music concerts and other cultural events, has a Venetian mosaic floor, Belgium stained glass windows and walls with intricate mosaic decorations. Outside of the Darbar Hall is an Italinate courtyard of water fountains. The palace houses a remarkable collection of old armoury and sculptures in bronze, marble & terracotta by Fellici. The grounds were landscaped by William Goldring, a specialist from Kew Gardens. The palace is open to the public and an audio tour is available. The Palace "compound" covers over 700 acres (2.8 km2) and houses a number of buildings, particularly the Moti Baug Palace and the Maharaja Fateh Singh Museum building.

British Architects in Baroda 29 September - 18 November 2017 Pickford’s House Museum, Derby Chai and the City; An Introduction Artcore’s project Chai and the City, dovetails into Britain’s celebration of 70th anniversary of India’s Independence this year. It comprises of two exhibitions linked together organically, showcasing artworks from 16 artists from both the UK and India on themes that closely link the two countries. The Indo-Saracenic architecture in India, designed by British architects, is the topic of an evocative exhibition of photographs of Baroda’s (now Vadodara’s) impressive Indo-Saracenic heritage; the other exhibition focuses on the popular culture and history of drinking tea/chai in both countries, but in completely different ways. Artists have created painted story-books and ceramics that celebrate the tea-culture. The overall project has two main themes: Artistic - Chai and the City, and Heritage - My Cup of Tea. Chai and the City focuses on the deep and abiding relationship between Britain and India. Socio-geographically, there have been movements of Indians to Britain, for education, employment, for aspiration to a better quality of life, or to escape socio-religio-political persecution. Many Indians work and have worked in different parts of the UK, contributing to the growth of their adopted country and community. This project reinforces the positive elements marking this dynamic socio-cultural exchange, celebrates this history, which has left permanent gems on the Indian architectural landscape, and creates strong networks for the future. The project has different entry points enabling diverse audiences to engage through exhibitions, workshops, artwork installations and discussions.

24 Hours in… Vadodara, City of Banyan Trees Aavo Padharo Vadodara tempts with big-city blandishments like trendy restaurants, vast malls and wide avenues. Feel its royal pulse overlaid with the colour and cacophony of a modern Indian metro that has now come of age. Shakun trawls through Vadodara’s nooks and crannies to bring you a list of all that is iconic in the city as well as a few little known jewels. You must visit then once you are in Vadodara. Sayaji Baug or Kamati Baug Take at least half a day to fully explore the 45 hectares of garden grounds, with 2 museums, a zoo, a planetarium, a flower clock, and an operational toy train, among other attractions, and then come back to the park whenever you need a respite from activities in the rest of the city. Laxmi Vilas Palace This palace incorporates all the dash and daring which typified Indian maharajas. This is actually a series of palaces built by the Gaekwad family in Baroda. Among the several, the Sarkar Wada is the oldest. Post its construction, the Lakshmi Vilas Palace was built and is definitely one of the most ostentatious in the palace complex. It houses the royal family and shows extensive use of Italian flooring and mosaic decorations on the wall. The palace is the best place to catch a glimpse of the royal armoury and bronze, marble and terracotta sculptures. Several smaller buildings within the palace compound include the Motibaug Palace, the Moti Bagh Stadium and the Maharaja Fateh Singh Museum. The palace also had a small zoo, where you can now only see crocodiles in a small pond.

  • Know Our Great City
Know our Great City Compiled By Dhananjay Wagh & Bhavin Parikh History Baroda State has a rich historical background. The ardent historian can trace Baroda's history over 2000 years and more. The first noted history of the city was of the early trader settlers who settled in the region in 812 A.D. The province was mainly Hindu-dominated with Hindu kings ruling till the year 1297. The Gupta Dynasty was the first power rulers of the region. After fierce battles, the region was taken over by the Chalukya Dynasty. Finally, the kingdom was annexed by the Solankis. By this time the Muslim rule had spread across India, and the reins of power were then snatched by the Delhi Sultans. The city was ruled for a long time by these Sultans, until they were easily overthrown by the grand Mughal emperors. The Mughals biggest problem were the mighty Marathas who slowly but eventually took over the region. It became the capital of the Maratha Gaekwads. Sayaji Rao III was the most able ruler of them, and he made many public and bureaucratic implementations in the region. The British had a major influence on the region but Vadodara remained a princely state till Independence and like all other princely states, Vadodara also joined the Republic of India in 1947 Origin of name Two thousand years back, there was a small town known as "Ankottak " (present day Akota) on the western bank of river Vishvamitri. The earliest mention of Vadodara is in a granth or charter of 812 that identifies it as Vadapadraka, a village attached to the nearby town of Ankottaka.
