Dr Herzl outlined to the Supreme Pontiff of the Catholic Church the full details of the Zionist project, providing assurances that the various Holy Places in Palestine would be “ex-territorialised” to ensure their security and protection, and sought the Pope’s endorsement and support, preferably through the issuing of a pro-Zionist encyclical. -
The Creation of the Codification Commission of Hajdúdorog (1929) in the Light of Archival Data*
The Creation of the Codification Commission of Hajdúdorog (1929) in the Light of Archival Data* Péter Szabó Summary: Introduction; 1. Request for the local participation in the codification process; 2. The content of the ‘draft resolution’ of the Chapter of Canons of Haj- dú dorog (2 May 1929); 3. Commencing the work of collecting sources; Concluding Remarks. Introduction The codification of Eastern Catholic Canon Law commenced in the time of Pope Pius XI. Representatives of the Churches concerned were meaningfully engaged in this work from the outset. Although the question of the legal distinctness of the Hungarian Rite was not unequivocally clarified yet, the Bishop of Hajdúdorog and the former Apostolic Exarchate were also requested to participate in the prepa- ration of the Code. This brief study is intended to provide a succinct overview of the initial steps of this local participation in the Eastern codification process based on a few hitherto unpublished archival re- cords. * The Research Group ‘Greek Catholic Heritage’ under the Joint Programme ‘Lendület’ (Momentum) of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and the St Athanasius Greek Catholic Theological College. abbreviations: AAS = Acta Apostolicae Sedis; AAEESS= Archivio della Con- gregazione degli Affari Ecclesiastici Straordinari; ASCO = Archivio della Sacra Congregazione Orientale; APCTL = Archivio Pontificio Consiglio per i Testi Legislativi; GKPL = Görögkatolikus Püspöki Levéltár (Greek Catholic Episco- pal Archives) [Debrecen]. -
The Founding of Baghdad College: Father Edmund A
The Founding of Baghdad College: Father Edmund A. Walsh Marisa Patulli Trythall Read at the 16th Alumni Reunion of Baghdad College and Al Hikma University Novi (Detroit), July 2009 Thank you. It is a pleasure to talk with you this morning about something we all love – Baghdad College. My relation with it, of course, is indirect – yours is direct, but, nevertheless, I feel very much a part of Baghdad College and of you. First of all, I wish to thank the two people have made this opportunity possible: Father Solomon Sara, S.J., my mentor at Georgetown University this past year and a treasured member of the Baghdad College community, and Mr. Ramzi Hermiz, our host today, who graciously invited me to attend this reunion and to speak this morning. I deeply appreciate the opportunity. I was introduced to Baghdad College about three years ago, when I began my Doctoral studies at the Pontifical Oriental Institute in Rome. In the discussion of possible thesis topics, my advisor, Father Robert Taft S.J., who had taught at Baghdad College in the 1950’s, suggested that I do research on the founding of that school and its relation to the New England Jesuit Province. This subject sounded very interesting to me. I had just completed my Masters Degree in Political Science at the University of Rome with a thesis on Libya and its relations with the West and I was, and still am, fascinated by the Near-East. The opportunity to continue working in this area was too good to pass up. -

436-San Lorenzo in Lucina
(436/36) San Lorenzo in Lucina San Lorenzo in Lucina is a heavily restored 5th century parish and titular church and minor basilica, just west of the Corso in the rione Colonna. The dedication is to St Lawrence, the 3rd century Roman deacon and martyr. [1] History According to tradition, the church was built in the mid 4th century on the ruins of a house belonging to the Roman lady Lucina, who sheltered Pope St Marcellus (308-309) during Maxentius' persecution. Pope St Damasus was elected here in 366. [1] [2] [f] [m] Archaeological investigations under the church in the early 20th century revealed remains of Roman houses from the reign of Emperor Hadrian, including a fine black and white marble floor in a curvilinear pattern. An apartment complex or insula on top of these remains, which dates from the 3rd century. The palaeochristian church was revealed as having been built in turn within the ruins of this. [1] It was restored by Pope Benedict II in 685 and by Pope Adrian I in 780. There had to be another one in the middle of the 9th century after the Tiber flooded the area twice. After its destruction by Robert Guiscard and his Norman soldiers in 1084 it must have been left in a derelict condition for some years. Pope Paschal II ordered the church to be "rebuilt" in 1112, although much of the old fabric was kept. The old brick walls can still be seen in part on the outside; they can be recognized because the mortar-beds are as thick as the bricks. -
